Thanks for you question. I'm pretty sure that your mom speaks the Southern Accent. In Southern Accent, any word starts with "x" pronounced as "s" in English. while words start with "s" in Vietnamese pronounced as "sh" in English. For examples: xe, xem, xanh ( pronounced as "s" in English), while, sao, sông, sẽ are pronounced ("sh"). Thank you very much for your videos .i am going to Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City in March , i have been studying when i can for about 3 months and i am having problems due to the difference in Northern and Southern dialects. For example you say "mình Tên" and it sounds like "mun tun" . You will use the word " thích " and that will sound like "tut". sometimes you will use words that end in oung and when spoken it sounds like you're saying oum. is there a rule for these pronunciations? Again thanks for the help.
