STOWAWAYS One of the big counterarguments always has been stowaways. But let me address how difficult it was to successfully be on aboard a ship in 1912. There weren't too many ways to get aboard without being noticed. Titanic had five gangways at Southampton open for passengers and crew on April 10, and they were never unguarded by the crew. They needed to check off boarding passengers and fellow crew members, plus 3rd class were required to go through health checks. All other ports had less available ways to board ship. But first and second class passengers could have friends and family board with them to see them off. Lawrence Beesley had a friend tour Titanic with him. While they needed to leave by "All ashore!" was called, it could happen they didn't leave (and then would be required to pay passage.) But where would you hide? Stewards knew how many passengers were in their sections and which cabins were unoccupied and locked those cabins. The body of Steward Cave had a passenger list to prove that. Many had keys. All areas that were off-limits to passengers were locked off and crew were assigned to make rounds and see that all was well in those areas around the clock. It was tough to hide on Titanic. Don't get me started on food. If you wanted to eat in a dining saloon you needed to present your dining room ticket which had your table number and number of passengers. This was true for all classes. THEN you have to think about how to sneak off Titanic when she reaches New York...

I'm not trying to challenge your arguments, as I agree with them. I just have a question. I remember from Titanic: Honor and Glory's documentary about the SS Atlantic that there were stowaways aboard, during her last voyage. How did they get aboard? Why were they stupid enough to think that they could hide aboard a White Star Line ship?

I have been living on a diet of Titanic history for so long. I live in Southampton so I guess it's close to me. The film Titanic caused a stir here in Southampton and it was all people thought about. I was reading the paper one day and someone had written a letter stating they were fed up with hearing about Titanic and could everyone just shut up about it now. Me, being so invested emotionally with the history, wrote in to the paper in reply and told this person how disrespectful they were being and that tragic loss of life to Southampton families still was being felt today. I do get very emotional when it comes to history LOL. I am enrolling myself at your Titanic University and look forward to more videos.

There were apparently a few people travelling under fake names. Prior to 1915 the British didn't have photo passports. Other forms of identification also didn't have photos, such as a birth or baptismal certificate. People could use fake or forged documents more easily. I think this was another reason for some of the confusion about who passengers were or whether they were on the ship.
