So far the main "unfinished" question I keep reading about is that the bridge roof wasn't completed. I honestly never heard that, but I can understand the origin. The roof was planked and painted grey, which was the case for several rooms on the Boat Deck (the Officers' Mess and pantry, the Engineers' Smokeroom, the kennels, and 2nd class elevator machinery room.) It was sealed in a way, I would need to look it up or ask Kyle Hudak, that made it watertight, but did not require the use of steel. Some of this roofing survives to this day on the 2nd class elevator roof.

@@hugoslr If that is the case, it would have been only to indicate the watertight doors had received the command to close, since some of the doors on Britannic did not close properly, and the bridge did not know so until inspections were carried out.

I found out a while back that the clocks aboard the Titanic were all electric, and synchronized. I thought that was really cool. That would've been pretty high tech for its time.

I forget if the master clock was electric or not, but the way it worked was pretty straightforward. When the master clock hit a certain point in time, it would send an electrical pulse that would activate the other clocks and pushed them forward the same amount. In turn, that meant when setting the clock back, these pulses were deactivated, and it would take however long for the master clock to make the difference between it and the slave clocks and actually start telling time again.

I’m very late to the comment party on all these videos, but enjoying them. One thing Titanic should’ve had, and I don’t know why didn’t, were extremely bright headlights. In 1912 surely they had extremely bright electric lamps that could be mounted on the bow. Maybe that would’ve helped spot the iceberg. Speaking of bergs, the “objects in mirror are closer than they appear” with the iceberg imposed upon honor and glory was hilarious. Poor Olympic, she unwittingly contributed to the death of her sister. No Olympic accident, Titanic sails in March, fairly high chance no iceberg collision.

Ships don’t have headlights for the same reason you don’t turn on the lights in your car; light pollution messes with the human eye’s perception in darkness. In fact, they specifically ordered all the forward-facing lights on the superstructure turned off for this very reason. Otherwise, the lookouts’ vision would be skewed.

I would like to point out the story of the organ that was supposedly ordered by The White Star Line to be installed on Titanic. The organ was built by the German company Welte & Söhne. Supposedly the building of the organ was delayed and it was never installed. There is some circumstantial evidence supporting the claim, but unfortunately it is inconclusive. The 'Titanic organ' can be visited today in Germany at Bruchsal Palace. On the other hand, there is certainty around the organ on the Brittanic, also built by Welte & Söhne. It was installed, but removed when she became a hospital ship. The Brittanic organ survives to this day and can be visited in a museum in Seewen, Switzerland.

0:44 - Q: What could we learn about the strength of TITANIC's hull and various iceberg collision scenarios from the Olympic collision? The reason that I ask is that I cannot find any broken rivets from the collision -- which many people accredit as the cause of the actual breach. So: I wonder whether it was actually a scraping "gash" that broke the hull plating OR the bumping of the hull against the iceberg that saw rivets fail and plates dented resulting in water displacement.

I remember one at one point it was there was talk of comparing the iceberg to the pointed end of a nail. The part of the burg the struck the side basically put some much pressure on a single point as it passed that it popped the rivet heads off allowing water to seep through the seems of the plates. It's like a bed of nails. You can lay on a bed of nails and not get hurt, but is you lay on a single nail you get hurt. I can't remember if the 2012 Expedition retconned this or not.

It’s the behavior of metal: ie a riveted seam is not the same as welded seam. It doesn’t have the same flexibility so when stressed it can still be riveted yet no longer watertight

If you look at the photo of Olympic, you can see lots of holes where the rivets used to be. The steel plates themselves are intact for the large part, just deformed. The claim that Titanic's rivet heads broke off can be debunked by looking at across section. They were countersunk at both ends, so would still hold in place if the head broke off. The problem was, the iceberg was shock loading one plate but not the other, causing the plates to warp and the rivets holding them to the next to stretch and snap. This would open up a gap between the plates.

The one I hear a lot is the myth that the rudder was too small, being patterned off a clipper ship's rudder. Several naval architects have looked over the data from the sea trials and have confirmed exactly the opposite, it would pass modern standards quite handily.

The Olympic class were meant to steer with the rudder AND propellers, as Capt. Smith did when he jumped in alongside the pilot and avoided collision with the New York. Smith seemed to have done more of his "homework" than the pilot in this one respect.

@@Dallas_K That's pretty well true of most multi-screw vessels at low speed, when you're not going fast enough for the rudder to have full effect you use differential thrust from the propellers to manuever in tight spaces. Pilots have to contend with all sorts of ships in the course of their duties, so not being intimately familiar with a brand-new ship bigger than anything that's come before is understandable. Hence while the pilot is nominally in charge going in and out of port, the ship's master is still ultimately responsible for the ship, and can intervene if necessary. The main action in the New York incident was to ring down for full astern to check the Titanic's forward motion which was causing the undertow which was sucking the smaller ship away from her mooring. The quick thinking of the crew of the harbor tug Vulcan also helped, as her master swung her in between the two ships to fend off the New York and get a line on her to get the situation back under control.

I couldn't help but notice the lack of doors for the boat deck cabins entrance in the grand staircase. It's quite distracting seeing the plain white panels amongst the rest of the ornate entrance. I notice too in later photos of the Olympic's GSC, there are doors installed here. I know, at least for the port side of the Olympic, there was no door for some time as this wall was adjacent to the Marconi Room....so.... were these doors a deliberate omission later adjusted on Olympic, or were they simply never installed in time?

As you sail westwards, the ship's clocks have to be retarded so that ship's time and the apparent time at your location are not too far out of synch. When you sail eastwards, you have to advance the clocks. On a transatlantic voyage, it would need to be done every day. If you were sailing due north or south, you wouldn't need to alter the clocks at all as you wouldn't be changing time zones.

Do you know why the gold stripe on Titanic separated the black hull and white superstructure while seemingly all other White Star Line ships had the gold stripe sitting lower on the hull? Olympic had the stripe in the middle early in her career but it was lowered later on. Was this due to the Titanic sinking?

True, unknowable, but from what I’ve heard had she sailed in March much less likely to have encountered large bergs in the position where she went down. I’m guessing none of them read the 1898 novel “Futility“ or would have avoided sailing in April.🙀 Ismay must have been unfamiliar or might have passed on Titanic as a name. Didn’t I read that the third ship was going to be called Gigantic but was changed to Britannic after the loss of Titanic because sounded too similar. Not certain, I could be confusing it with “Big Broadcast of 1938” movie that features a ship called the Gigantic. All I know is that given the unlikely series of unfortunate events it almost seems that Titanic was predestined to be lost. But I’ve watched several aviation disasters that are the same; a series of events, any which not happening, could have prevented the tragedy.

I know a bit of that. 1880's two ships are planned. Oceanic and it's sister Olympic. Thomas Ismay dies but Oceanic is already being built. Olympic however was never built yet so they canceled it. Olympic's remaining parts went to a new class called "The Big Four". After the Big Four, White Star want to reclaim the title of "Biggest Ship" on a ship. They think of a gigantic liner and resurrect the name "Olympic". That's why RMS Olympic was called RMS Olympic.

It's unfortunate that nobody at Harland & Wolf had the foresight to equip the Titanic with any of the iceberg detection systems that were avalible in 1911. Even the S.S. Great Eastern had a similar system aboard when she crossed the North Atlantic for the first time.

Apparently it was the rivets in the bow section, which couldn’t be installed using machinery, which failed. Apparently Olympic was fortunate that she never collided with anything in her bow area. The unexploded torpedo hit her mid ship, I think.

One of the things I've read every now and then is that wet paint on the pullies of the lifeboat davits caused them to bind up when some of the boats were being lowered. Additionally, will the missing paint on the spar be replicated on your digital model?

Californian wasnt evil. she cant do anything to help Titanic. She had cut her machines off for the night. Before she could sail to the sinking Titanic she need to start up her engines. Which means that she need to steam up for at least 2 hours before she could sail.... And the the Titanic was gone already.

As far as I'm aware, the munitions it carried exploded from the torpedo creating an even larger hole and since it was moving that sank it even faster.

Lusitania was torpedoed at 2:12pm. Cunard's engine room and crew shifts ran on Royal Navy Shifts so the 2:00 crew was being replaced. The torpedo also hit one of her boiler rooms and either caused a coal dust explosion or blew up one of the boilers. The ship lost all electrical power so the watertight doors could not be closed and the fact that she had longitudinal bulkheads that could be used for ballast and extra padding if used as a cruiser, once they filled with water they caused the ship to lean further starboard and rendered the port side lifeboats practically useless. Essentially the crew of the U-20 hit her at the right time in the right place.

Do you guys know the brand of clocks on the ship? you mentioned the magneta system for the slave clocks, as far as i can see that was also a brand unless i´m missunderstanding. I don’t know anything about ocean liners. But as a common passenger I wouldn’t consider a ship to be _completely ship shape_ if it had an uncontrolled coal fire upon launch. Is that a non-concern?

it was %100 controlled. tiny coal fires like that were common on steam ships, and were not a danger in any way.

James Fracasse from what I heard, apparently there was several cables that the officers could stretch the boat to and winch down. Because Titanic was unfinished the crew was left to use additional spars as a means of keeping the boats level as they were dropped a deck.
