It is so refreshing to see a different take on golf tuition. It almost to a simpleton like me is that addressing the back /ghost ball means that the sternum is then facing the end of the low point. I’ve used the preset drill for 20yr and never achieved a better strike or a better feeing of balanced release, by that I mean proper rotation and able to stand tall on left leg after impact facing target. Seeing this video esp the small segment at the end is thrilling to me as I always felt a weirdo incorporating the preset at right thigh ( 4:30 set) into my pre shot routine. Not any more... I’m liberated... thanks guys.

Brandon, you really need to travel to Australia and visit a John Hensby who developed a swing called Channel Lock. It's based on a back ball position (off the right foot) and is designed to swing in to out to eliminate the pulls and misses left. Very similar to the lesson here only turning through the ball is not necessary. No conscious weight shift required either. So simple. Hogan can be complicated.

That sounds like good advice for a fully rotational type swinger. I’m a hands and arms guy. I do get my hands up. But by keeping my back to the target a bit longer and knowing I need to get the hands and clubhead moving down and forward early in the downswing it all works out. I do think the Hogan approach works though.

But this is different and something I can actually do with little thought during the swing. The 1 question I have is do you play the ball back and adjust your shoulders accordingly or do you play it in what would be a normal ball position and set your club 4 or 5 inches back something Like Moe Norman used to do? I use very stiff shafts.. have zero interest in toe droop. Very slight.. I don't want to be feeling that. I put extremely stiff "pole" shaft in my drivers for this exact reason. Flatter on the downswing is what you want.. set up... not as important. We don't hit the ball on the backswing.

Hi John Loving this series of videos. Can you please explain why offset is not desirable in the clubs you would recommend.
@lagpressure
@lagpressure 2 жыл бұрын
Off set is a nightmare for good golf swings. It's purpose is to delay the closing of the face for OTT hackers. Hurts the good players because it forces them to throw the right arm at the ball to close the face or come OTT themselves to square it up. No offset keeps the clubface in sync with the pivot rotation. Offset throws it out of sync and requires often hazardous manipulations

I would like to hear John E's thoughts on what I think is the "one thing" that separates and is uniquely "Hogan" about Mr. Hogan's swing. That is the post impact extension of the torso, the pelvic thrust and his ability to maintain the straight line of the right arm and shaft until the clubhead is nearly above his right shoulder. I often ask myself if this was an "effect" of his preimpact and post impact actions or a deliberate effort on his part. It is very very difficult to emulate and maintain balance; especially if the plane the shaft is on remains tilted to the left and does not shoot up skyward.

@@johnmeade9521 I would think so... not sure that would just happen by accident. Seemed he was still doing that well into his 70's. Most of the great golfers as they age start to stall their pivot post impact. I think you need to be aware of that motor and keep it oiled up as the decades pass.

@wayneriley7367

So cares about hogan, Nicklaus, Trevino? Interesting- most people said Trevino was the best ball striker but do people want to swing like him? Same thing with Moe, accurate as heck, but no one says I want to swing like that. Same for hogan, he practiced and knew his body and how he thought. Heck, Faldo now says don’t practice so much on the range. The key is to get the club face back square while the right hand is ‘releasing’ figure out that and you don’t need hogan or Haney or these others. John here is giving us an idea of how some of us may do it.
@lagpressure
@lagpressure 2 жыл бұрын
From my view of Hogan, he moved his feet open or closed depending upon the intensity of the shot ... closed for more shoulder rotation on backswing... open on shorter irons for more emphasis on post impact exit protocols.

@@lagpressure i like the fact that your having us see the shot and in a sense feel the shot. Don’t you think that Hogan or Snead or anyone of the great players just hit shots by instinct. Intuition. After hitting thousands of balls you at some point must trust your swing. There are swing mechanics that allow you to hit inside out with a lateral movement towards the ball. And a complete shoulder turn. The swing is called channel lock, named by its developer, John Hensby in Australia. I believe it had some of the same elements of your ideas. Only less stress on the body. Check KZbin site 1atomicgolf. Thanks John. Love your passion.

Amazing series of insightful videos. Really enjoying them. I just have to make sure I don't try doing this on course tomorrow, lol. But it will be really interesting on the range. Question for John - is the flatter lie just for the longer clubs or do you recommend doing this for all clubs? Wedges, in particular are so short that, I think, playing a flat lie would be really challenging.
@lagpressure
@lagpressure 2 жыл бұрын
Especially flatten the short irons.. Trevino said he felt confident going up against Jack Nicklaus because Jack's wedges were so much more upright than Lee's. Jack would miss long left a lot more often than Lee would.. so Lee would have uphill right to left putts more often.. Jack often missed short irons long left leaving more difficult downhill left to right putts. This slight advantage would show up over the course of four rounds. We want to put everything we can in our favor.. odds.. statistics... probability... like a good poker player.

Anything that gets us thinking is good to watch. Looks to me like Hogan or Moe vs Snead. Turning vs tipping. Dr Kwon is suggesting tipping like Snead. John is turning like Hogan. Both went alright didn't they? I would think there is a natural inclination towards one or the other depending on your personal biomechanics and what the hips want to do. I agree that golf needs to get rid of the alignment stick. Best way to handicap a new golfer is say their toe line has to be parallel to the target line.

Knudson was correct when he said "The Head Goes Where it Goes... the head is NOT the center of the swing". Narrow stances help keep the head still, but the head is a non issue in the golf swing. Wide stances open up the great advantage of initiation with a lower body lateral move to save pivot rotation. Those who disagree are disagreeing with Ben Hogan... I wouldn't do that.

The second ball position is the same idea as what Moe Norman said he did with the coin 22 inches behind the ball and tried to tap it with his club. You can also see Ben hogan look at a point to aim for near his back foot before he took his back swing. These days they tell people to make a turn on top of the ball which is why it’s so easy to come over the top, the great were turning away from the ball not on top of it.

One thing I am seeing over and over is younger players taking the club back outside, and I am pretty sure it's because they are setting up their cameras elevated and above their baseline or planeline..... therefore... for the clubshaft to appear onplane visually through the camera eye, they actually have to start the clubhead way outside to accommodate for the camera positioning. It might look good "on camera" but ironically it's very off plane and then requires an unnecessary manipulation of sorts.
@lagpressure

@@gzman1 Moe did move his shoulders to turn, but not as much as other players because he pre set a lot of that turn at address... however, they still moved into a full turn... especially when he was younger.

@@forrestgardener8906 There is a video in this series explaining the benefits of flattening the shaft, It's not a matter of having your impact analysed, it's changing your swing to accommodate the flatter shaft because physics demonstrates that a flatter shaft puts you in a position where it is almost impossible to hook or pull to any great degree.
