What would you learn in 80 years of gardening and observing life? And would you pass those lessons on to gardeners and friends who follow? Gardener Scott discusses his friend 95-year-old Howard Matz and the recent books he published with observations, sayings, and wisdom over 80 years of his good life. (Video #279)

The garden is definitely more for me than what I plant there. I am 55 and am going blind. I had to quit driving and work two years ago so I am home most of the time. I have a potager garden now and a vegetable garden. I have added water and wind chimes for sound and lots of color. It is my sanctuary where I pray, plant, sweat, and get my exercise. A lot of thinking goes on in the garden. I’m always adding to it. It is a very life saving place for me.👩‍🌾💛☀️

My father is 95.75 years old now and sadly is in a long-term care home. I have pictures of him as a teen in the turnip patch with his sister Winnie, He was a large beef farmer and avid gardener! He could grow anything and did it grow and produce!!!! It was what we ate daily with our meat and in our salads. It was not uncommon to have corn on the cob, new potatoes and carrots with a side of yellow beans or green beans. No meat that supper or lunch. But you were so full and full of plant energy you didn't miss it. I was in the garden when I was a very young child and still am at 52. I write down and am trying to get a book wrote called..."Waste Not! Want Not!" A very old fashioned saying also. I just love watching your videos and now am addicted to the live chats. Keep up the videos Gardener Scott! Thank you from Colorado Lows Target area lol SW of Thunder Bay, ON. Canada

I’m an old guy, too. In the7th grade, my English teacher, seeing an anxious and eager kid, gave me the task of learning 3 new words daily. 40 years later, I’m still doing just that. It is important (and valuable), to WRITE things so you can review them. Thank you, Mrs. Kinman of Nashville!! God bless you.

My tutor watches you as well, we all live in new Zealand good old taranaki and we use some of your videos for our horticulture class . I'm doing gardening tips so people don't use false hacks that are not true or grow something they are not suppose to. I'm also building a massive community garden in our local town and it's hard work being a volunteer. Thankyou for being gardener scott. Ka kite, pomare

There is a lot of wisdom in the words of Oma Desala: "Words do not express things, speech does not define the spirit, swayed by words, one is lost" We recognize this to mean that one must learn directly from the world around us, as second hand knowledge can carry the baggages of agenda or compiled misinterpretation. Also, find the "We Are One" speech from babylon5, right after it they even say that it's a work in progress, and that each of us can find better words for this vital, universal sentiment.

I took the master gardener classes 21 years ago. I learned quite a bit and then promptly stopped gardening. Why? Because my property was (and is) covered with hundreds of non pruned black walnut trees. They ruined my garden and prevented anything from growing. My husband wouldn’t let me have them cut down so I had 20 acres but no way to grow food. Guess I should have forced him to cut them down or sell this place and move. But I didn’t and just did other things and tried to grow flowers (very limited on what will grow around black walnuts). I just missed getting killed by one of those trees. The nuts that fall are the size of a base ball and just as heavy. There is a special place in hell for husbands who treat their wives like garbage. Life is too short, cut down those trees (I’m also allergic to) and live the life you want. 🙀
