I work in the ICU and today a chaplain visited and prayed for my patient. I was still doing what I needed to do at the beside. the chaplain just stood at one side of the room and started praying. for that brief moment i felt that the room was filled with calm and peace. spiritual healing can have amazing power. I could feel the negative energy melting away, and I am not even religious or anything. It’s just hard to explain. may have biological effects that fix neurotransmitters / brain pathways. It just cannot be fully explained by our science yet… thank you for sharing your ideas. Enjoyed watching. My tears 😭 to the ER couple story.

ACPE was a requirement for my ordination in my denomination so I really had no choice. My ACPE supervisor told me that most hospitals will look for the ACPE credential when hiring chaplains. This was about 3-4 years ago so I'm not sure if that still is true today. Hope that helps!

Hey Pastor Tim, I'm 26, halfway through my Mdiv certification, and am seriously considering this vocation. I was a campus minister for almost 4 years and the soul care aspects of campus ministry are drawing me towards this difficult yet necessary vocation. I'm curious about different aspects of this if you have the time for my questions while considering this vocation: What was your background before pursuing chaplaincy and what drew you to this ministry? What are the duties performed during a typical week, month, and year? do you have a set routine? How much variety is there on a day-to-day basis? What didn’t you know before you got into this industry that you wish someone had told you? How have your positional responsibilities evolved in the midst of Covid?
@TimothyYi
@TimothyYi 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jason! Just some of my thoughts. Also keep in mind that I only completed 1 unit of CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education). You need 4 units in order to be certified so I can only speak from 1 unit's experience. I am in full-time ministry and my denomination requires me to take do chaplaincy work as part of my ordination process. That is how I got introduced to chaplaincy work. I was assigned to two floors and I would knock on each room and ask if they wanted to talk with a chaplain. Some said yes, many said no. The patients that I had conversations were lighthearted and pleasant and most would end in a prayer. This would be a typical day. When I did my overnight shifts, there would be a little more variety. For example, I was called into the ER twice in the middle of the night to be with families that lost a loved one. Those were very impactful and memorable to me because I knew my presence to those families mattered. One thing that I learned from this experience was that chaplaincy is more about being present rather than telling and preaching and leading. I hope this helps a bit man!

As a CPE supervisor, I am more interested in what you learned about yourself. John Valentino
@TimothyYi
@TimothyYi 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds exactly what a CPE supervisor would say! I've learned that I lacked the ability to express my emotions. Part of it is personality and part is also my upbringing in Asian culture. I've always suppressed my thoughts and emotions and noticed how that affected my ability to identify what my patients were going through. It's still a challenge for me to this day, but I've learned a great deal about self-awareness from my short time in CPE. As I type this, I remember all the verbatims I had to write! Good times~
@richardlee2120
@richardlee2120 3 жыл бұрын
@@TimothyYi I took one unit of CPE in seminary as a chaplain intern. I'm a part time chaplain today, and apply what I learned. However, I'm also Asian and I do not express emotions and don't believe in "transparency." I make a better trial lawyer than a hospital chaplain. I can certainly function as a chaplain up to a certain point, but I'm not interested in comforting people all the time. Not my thing.
@TimothyYi
@TimothyYi 3 жыл бұрын
@@richardlee2120 I feel you. Asians don't reveal much which is why I had such an uncomfortable time during IPR. Have you ever had to do that? I think chaplaincy is built on the ministry of "presence" which is why it could be hard for many people. You're not there to fix, convict, or even counsel which is hard for the majority of people to do

ACPE is not the gold standard. that is a self-proclaimed status. I am board certified with APC and CPSP. CPSP In my opinion is more advanced training. Hospitals with ACPE training centers also practice discriminatory hiring practices toward other organizations.

@@TimothyYi I"ve taken 4 units of traditional ACPE CPE and became BCC-ed. Each unit challenging and rigorous, each called me to go deeper, stretched me, gave me strength, refined and affirmed my calling, The process -- with the "action, reflection, action", the emphasis on personal/spiritual formation (verses simply "learning skills for ministry), the peer/educator interaction, etc., was truly transformative for me. Lately, though, I've learned that other groups are offering "CPE" that is not supervised by trained ACPE educators/values/goals, most of these are rather quick, online, skill-oriented (rather than formative) involve few of the profound principles/challenges/growth of ACPE CPE, and they lack the in-your-face (for lack of a better word) that makes ACPE CPE so formative -- ya know, those verbatims with peers and educator -- those ah-ha moments -- the tears and realizations, etc. These other programs are simpler to complete, so maybe more appealing. Organizations looking for professional chaplains know the difference, though, since most will hire only BCCs who trained with APCE educators. I've known folks who have chosen the lesser CPE, and I see the difference.
