Late reply but rune magic in general prides itself on efficiency and versatility. Primordial rune magic being possibly one of the most powerful forms of high thaumaturgy. Sorry my inner nerd felt compulsed to say this. You probably already knew this.

According to the lore one of the reasons why Rune magecraft is unpopular within the clock tower is because the Thrule Society, which is an organization affiliated with the wandering sea branch of the association is hoarding what little remains of the original runic script. Another reason why it's not popular is because the form of tube magecrat was in Decline until Touko was able to recreate three of the Primeval runes. In the third Case Files novel she even uses the manaz rune to physically take control of Mages bodies and to shut off their magic circuits. Moving forward with these videos you should definitely read the casefile novels as they provide incredibly clear and precise examples of different types of Magecraft in the lore. The first three novels are completely translated and can be read on Beast's lair.

Rune magic is very interesting in terms actually learning it ; although mastery of it is rather difficult if you are using it for that intended purpose. Reason why cu struggled in using it even though learning it and scathach was able to completely master it for knowing its complete origin. I find it quite interesting that typemoon decided to use the way rune magic can be used in magecraft. I loved the information into this and find the letter means quite helpful for those who may not know.

Plus cu likes to be a lancer so he would not use runes that much like shirou being able to make anything (cloth beam) bur swords being his best and perfered choice for battle.

And in older works you see if on aoko akiha change so it's important plus Medusa bringing it up shows it's important for fate as well Also Shinji needs his moment. This was just a excuse to show Fanart of Bazett, Skadi and Scathach, wasn't it :D Jokes asside, most Runes in Nasuverse are from irl Elder Futhark or Elder Futhork. There are other "runic" Languages, like the Anglo-Saxon Runes or Younger Futhark. As for where this Associations with Stuff, like ᛁ (Isa) with Ice or ᛃ (Jera) with harvesting Cycles? It seems to come from the Translation of the Runes, but i have not been able to find a single source that doesn't say it's from esotric-sheit from the 20th Century or litteraly the Nazis, who liked to use them because they were so "germanic" and "symbolic". Anyway, these Associations is also what makes them so popular as Magic-Power-Writing or Language. That and that Tolkien really liked from studying anglo-saxon literature and used them in a diffrent Language in Lord of the Rings for the Dwarfs. If you per change find a interview with Professor that deals with Runes and can actually explain the Associations, please send it to me, i've been trying to find a answer to this for years.

Now I remember, I found on certain anime which have misunderstanding about Mana and Rune. They treated or even replaced the concept of Mana and replace it with Rune. They explained Rune was source of power and magic, people who don't have Rune can't use magic and other things. How to replenish Rune? Nutritious food of course. Fastest way? Well... Sexual intercourse is a faster way!! What color of rune? Hmm... Green if I'm not mistaken because I seen people extracted it... Thanks for this lesson, now I know the truth, now it seems funny I ever believed that misconception.

3:40 just to note the primeval runes are just another name for primordial runes like the ones scathach wield(the ones from odin) the old runes aren't older than the primordial ones they were made after those started being lost and then comes modern runes as the most recent, both old runes and modern can't compare to primordial, also just an interesting tidbit primordial runes seem to follow elder futhark and the old runes likely follow younger futhark, a rather cool distinction like you said heavily tied into norse mytth/history

I wonder if there is any chance to create more variants of the runes or see which other ways we can combine the runes. Also, while I understand that association with the rune is part of it, it seems that they might not get the desired effect like, I might use the Runes associated with fire or water will not actually create said elements. Ansuz shouldn't associate with Fire to bring order, but both times it has been used, they create fire to return order. I really would like to experiment with them and their combinations to see what I could do and what I can't.

It's very possible. The story isn't timelocked in any way. You may have missed some events, but you won't miss any of the overarching story. Besides, the JP version is starting to rerelease some older events for the purposes of welfare servants and story, so you may be able to check them out in the future.

I'm writing a multi-crossover Fanfiction that involves Shirou Emiya in the Warhammer World becoming accustomed to the new Magic-System that is similar yet different to his world's Mage-craft. He has to specifically use the Lore of Metal which is most similar to his own but a Key-difference is that it can be used to create a Philosopher's Stone by solidifying magical energy. I plan on one of these differences allowing Shirou to use Runes that he learned from his time at the Clock Tower on Earth but couldn't use. He'll use Runes coupled with a Philosopher's Stone as a focus to be able to use his adapted Mage-craft easier without risk of being corrupted by the Warp. He'll use Ansuz, Kenaz and Sowilo.

Do you think Counter Guardian Emiya would have been better classified as an Avenger instead of an Archer servant given his motivation and resentment towards his past self, especially in Unlimited Blade Works?

Archer fits him most. The class servants are assigned to classes according to their talents during their lifetime. Shirous talent was archery so he'd be an Archer class servant of course. Avenger class wouldn't make any sense because he never resented anyone during his life. The wiki also states that the Heroic Spirit Emiya can only be summoned as an Archer.

Nathan Colley I think it could have been done like that, but I think they were trying to make avengers extremely rare when writing Stay Night. FGO kinda went crazy.

Hey Dai, random question but do you know why sigma is probably capable of fighting against and beating servants? In strange fake he's curious why Watcher thought he could take on a heroic spirit and given the experiments done to him and, well, the very purpose of the watcher-class meaning he will have that strength, I'm curious why he'd have that kind of power. All I can find on him is being maya's kid (and thereby technically shirou and illya's brother...though shirou would be the adopted one) a magical experiment, a mercenary and good at familiar magecraft. Nothing else. Also what do think watcher Shakespeare would be like? Seems like the perfect class for him and thereby a total nightmare for everyone else.

OtakuDaiKun basically a holy grail war where nobody is pretending its supposed to make sense, and a lot of the servants are way stronger than normal on average. Like there’s no one really below A-tier here. Avenger-Archer Hercules: has 12 or 13 noble phantasms and all of them are the most broken shit ever, even if one of them literally only exists to counteract Gil. One I really just think is broken is his ability to steal his opponents noble phantasm no matter what it is, and I mean that viscerally. Even magical or conceptual abilities or unique physical traits can get stolen, so if he fought his berserker self he'd just STEAL 12 lives. Big weakness in that it lets the master of the servant he stole the phantasm from use magecraft on him as if he were a normal human basically since all manners of of magic resistance to the masters specific magic or magecraft get nullified. Penths older sister Enkidu and Gil Evil revived Ishtar/Ishtars curse as a master (who is fucking terrifying because even through she’s only really powerful for a human, the lengths this woman will go to for revenge over the pettiest shit are ridiculous and horrific.) The Humbaba as berserker A false caster who can create new noble phantasms and make the people who wield them into pseudo-heroes Prelati as true caster, who can trick Gaia into making what he wants reality. It goes on. And no one gets weaker. Watcher is a weird class that isn’t exactly an extra class. Specifically it’s a class that seeks to make the master who summons the heroic spirit “into the heroic spirit fit for the class they would have summoned”. A watcher class heroic spirit can’t or normally doesn’t participate in the grail war or fight at all. Rather, they ‘watch’ the battlefield and support their master, having them go through and fight the other heroic spirits in the war themselves in lieu of an actual heroic spirit, growing their power and amassing a ‘legend’ for them that eventually allows them to reach the level of a real heroic spirit if they survive. The class they gain being that of the heroic spirit they would have summoned, as Sigma is being ‘bred’ by watcher to become the true lancer in his holy grail war. Basically the worst class to summon in history. It’s either a guaranteed death sentence or you’re going to wish it was just a little bit by the end of the war if you survive that long. Imagine summoning watcher when you wanted to Summon avenger. Oblivion correction could be a hell of a drug. What’s worse is how ironic Sigma summoned the watcher class heroic spirit he did. Watcher (since their true name is unknown) is normally summoned to the gatekeeper class and has EX in I think all of her parameters. Not to mention I think she can upkeep her mana cost entirely by herself, and he is also a giant flying whale holding a magic spear as long as a skyscraper in her mouth. Sigma done fucked up.
