We have all heard of the idea that travelling can 'broaden the mind' but is this the case in reality? Do we start the journey with preconceived ideas about the place we are about to visit? Sara is interested in culture and human interaction. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I'm not Indian, it's been two years since I've moved to India for work. People here are very kind. The very first day when I moved in to an apartment, I had no groceries or utensils to cook. I thought of ordering food, but my neighbour brought me hot meals that she cooked even though I never asked. She don't know English but she can understand a little and I don't speak any Indian languages.

I am from India. I travelled a lot within India and to over 25 countries before I came to USA 23 years ago. I was appalled by the ignorance of the people here about 1/7th of humanity, the world’s largest democracy, the oldest civilization and the most diverse population - a country that. accounted for over a quarter of the world’s GDP until 200 years ago! On my first flight within America (within a day of landing) I found myself sitting next to an Air Hostess who had completed her shift and was on her flight back home. It was a long flight - from New York to Seattle and we talked on various topics. A couple of hours into our chat, she asked me where I live. I told her I live in India and was on my first visit to USA. She was surprised and said: “But you speak so good English” I said: “So? Why is it so surprising? English is one of the two major language of National Commerce, Law and Government in country and it’s English speaking population is probably larger than USA (Officially it is second to India, but that is only because it is not the first language of most people who speak the language and the Indian Census only recorded their first or primary language). As an Air Hostess she must have travelled a lot and met many people from around the world, If this was the extent of her information, what could I expect of others I thought. My expectations fell to the floor and nothing surprised me after that. I had just come into fish bowl - a continent sized island separated by thousands of miles of sea from the rest of the world - physically and in every other way.

This video filled my heart. Just yesterday I was in a Munich bar talking to a local guy. He told me how he went to Bombay 30 years ago and he disliked it so much and that he does not even want to go to Indian restaurants because he is still scared. I felt so bad that people think of my country like this. Hearing such kind words from you really makes me happy and fills me with pleasure that there are still people who choose to see the beauty in the world.

Sara, I am touched by the way you described about our motherland....I can clearly see you carry lot of emotions and great memories about India which I'm sure you will cherish for a long long time to come. During my first visit to USA I had a stop over in one of the European countries (dont want to name the country) and needed some coins to make a call home. I went to a coffee shop and requested for few coins in exchange for a couple of dollars. The lady at the shop was so rude and shouted at me saying its not a bank or post office. I was shocked to see the reaction. Such a thing would never happen in India or at least never happened to me so far.

As an indian, i can say that each and every line she said was pin point perfect and also like the way she addresses the india as 'she' as we respect our nation as "bharat mata" meaning the mother india. Huge respect to my nation india 🇮🇳🇮🇳

We respect the whole cosmic world & the nature. Its so amazing that the speaker is short of words & her expression is so true by heart that she is not able to fully express her experience & gratitude. I still remember when I was a kid, I use to take care of my brother, friends, & random people at anytime with due respect & gratitude. India is where a brother waits for her little sister to get married first & takes care of their parents & then thinks about his wedding. its a place where you could knock on any home at anytime for help & being a Hindu you could still cherish your Christian choir at christian school & visit my buddy at a mosque near my home. its just unimaginable...:)

This is what I always wanted foreigners to notice other than food, colours, diversity....the attitude most of us have towards others...the sense of ACCEPTANCE.... No need to chng yourself.... No need to adjust yourself to the culture...you will be accepted by everyone.... They will welcome you whole heartedly....

Well said... but at times this acceptence becomes worse when there r cases referring to the bad treatment of foreigners... especially sometimes women... but no doubt India is a grt country ♥️
