It's very common nowadays for people to use anime for motivation - listening to soundtracks in the gym, watching big scenes before a big moment IRL, or just rewatching THAT moment when we're at a low point. I could name countless motivational anime quotes or scenes, but of all of them, my favourite is undoubtedly "Tanaka's Greatest Moment" - his cross shot against Inarizaki to win the first set.
Tanaka's whole speech about how he's "Nothing but average", and therefore has is something that's always really inspired me. During my absolute lowest moments, his following line is one that's played in my head again and again.
CHAPTERS:
00:00 Intro
01:05 Tanaka Ryūnosuke
01:45 Karasuno vs Inarizaki
04:08 Karasuno set point(s)
05:00 Tanaka is doing well
06:38 Tanaka's greatest moment
10:55 The monster's ball
12:18 "We need your attacks, Tanaka"
13:12 Tanaka's new path
15:33 Outro

I don't get why people perpetrate this notion that Tanaka is average. HE THINKS he's average, but by all means, to someone who plays volleyball, he is at least above average. The story doesn't highlight his skills as much, maybe because it's not flashy, or maybe as a setup to his characterization in the Inarizaki match. He actually has good reflexes and game sense to the point where he's a consistent first touch or second touch to out-of-system balls. He's an incredible side wiper and line spiker, which were his main weapons before adding a sick cutter to his arsenal. He's at least showed decent skill with all the relevant volleyball skills except for underhand setting. He's also the only Karasuno regular whose never missed a single rally since the start of the story. This really circles back to the insult that he's just a budget Bokuto. The fact that Omimi even thought to compare him to a specific top 5 ace means Tanaka himself is on his way to becoming like him. In my perspective, that's a big compliment considering Bokuto is a third year with lots of experience going up against high class teams (Tokyo is stacked af and Fukurodani is a powerhouse team in a stacked region) while Tanaka is a second year with only a few months worth of experience with high level volleyball and already wrecking top level ones in a team where he is by no means a slouch.
@icaimas719
@icaimas719 Ай бұрын
Same! People and even Tanaka himself often call him average, but that is out of perspective! He might not be on the same level as Bokuto or others, but he always keeps up, he´s always there when he´s needed. He´s a reliable pillar of the Karasuno team. People claim he´s average at best. Try to be average in an ocean of geniuses, gifted and freaks. XD

@ShjadeNexayre

I think in this context, "average" might be better thought of as "not special" or "well-rounded." He's not bad at anything, but he's not the best at anything. He doesn't have any specific peak that stands out. His "stats" are average across the board. You undoubtedly want at least one player like that on your team, someone you can depend on to always do what they need to do wherever they are on the court, but there's always someone on the team who'd have been able to do that thing better than him if they'd been in the same position because they're the best at that specific thing. In the context of high-level players in the league-where everyone is already, by default, "above average" compared to the entirety of human beings who play volleyball, sure-he's average. He'd fill a role on any team at nationals and he'd do it well enough to merit being on the court, but he'd never excel the way star players do. He's a 4-star player in a field full of 4-star players, but it's the 5-star names that stick out.
@rafaelperalta1676
@rafaelperalta1676 12 күн бұрын
The way I comprehend the thought of him being called as an average is the fact that they play in a high-level environment. There's also the fact that Karasuno is an up-and-coming team, is filled with specialists or should I say standouts (like Kageyama who is a super setter, Nishinoya, a super libero, etc.) who overshadows an all-rounder Tanaka. Plus, their enemies are arguably top 3 best high school team. Yes, there's no way Tanaka is actually average in terms of skills (he is a high-spec player), but him being called an average is just like saying he is a normal person mixed in a crowd of celebrities. This is my opinion only.

This is one of the best videos I've seen on KZbin in a LONG time. I clicked because of the one line bait and I love Haikyuu, wavered a bit when I saw that it was a 17 minute video, and then 17 minutes later I was sad it passed by so quickly. A perfect summary of Tanaka's journey to this moment, the actual audio from his big moment so that fresh off of hearing his story we get to experience the moment again, and then a (admittedly somewhat sappy but still nice) message to send us off with. Just truly well done.

I've felt like Tanaka. this year in high school I joined the wind ensemble, an advanced music group, and way out of my league. I remember coming away from rehearsals filled with shame and the idea that I shouldn't be there, honestly sometimes with tears in my eyes too. After a lot of practice I finally feel I have caught up to my peers and have a sense of belonging. The best advice I can give to anyone who feels average is don't get too much in your head and also just enjoy the moment because one day you will be better.

I was so excited when you continued into Kageyama telling Tanaka he's not holding off on the left attacks. It's one of my favorite moments for them, both in the encouragement (if not intended as such) given from kageyama, but also the moment it leads to. When Kageyama makes that set, in a big way he is showing Tanaka that Tanaka is performing on an elite level. Why? Because he - the best setter they have - is trusting Tanaka with the full range of his weapons, even at the cost of other advantages Kageyama could have gleaned out of the play. This was the very argument Hinata/Kageyama had earlier in the series when Hinata wanted to be more than the bullet Kageyama fired. Tanaka may not be able to live in that world of giants, but on that day in that match he was definitely on that level. And that sequence with kageyama treating him like a full partner in the play cements it so well - while simultaneously showing Kageyama's own growth as the 'spoiled prince' of the court.

"I stand on the battlefield to protect what's important to me. And if anyone's to stand in my way, I don't care if it's one of my kind, my brother or anyone else... I'll crush them all! Then and now, what I protect has never changed." This line from Gintama made me want to find what i want to protect, and led me to my current life path. As simple as the line is, it gave me that final push that was detrimental in where I'm at now.

The line that I personally resonated more with was the moment he hits the cross shot: 出来る まで やれば、出来る! After my 2nd failed attempt of the JLPT N3 test, I started to lose motivation and couldn't think of a way of how I would be able to succeed on a possible third attempt.. But then this clip became my motivation to keep on studying and improving my Japanese. In December I did my 3rd attempt... and I was able to pass the test this time!! Immediately I went back to this clip and felt a huge release of emotions 😭! Also I visited Japan in April and was able to converse with so many people. And to top it all of, I was able to find a shirt of Tanaka with these manga panels printed on it!!😍

Will can make the averagely talented extraordinary enough to stand on the courts of monster everyone breaks mentally if you can expand that barometer past the talented with fundamentals to match you more than belong on that court all it takes is one play to shift the tides and that has made all the difference.

huge thanks for making this video. I'm currently at the process of acctepting a hard failure. I've never commited to anything more than that (entrance exams) in my life. Yet the video reminded me that "i don't have time to be looking down" and I would be frustrated for the rest of my life if I gave up on my dream of being a doctor -just like Tanaka would be furious with himself for standing out of the court. Also, your voice is so fantastic that gave me chills. I'm going to check out rest of your videos :)

man this be hitting close to home, wether you're an athlete or a businessman or even an artist this hits all of us in a way. i just finished selling from a convention and i was sharing a booth with one of my friend who has massive following and it always felt like my merch was overshadowed by hers because mines look very average, it had me spiralling if it was even worth it for me to continue selling merch or not (of course theres a lot of factors to consider for stuff like this). but i'll see what opportunities i have and take em, like tanaka i dont have a reason nor the time and energy to keep sulking no more. so chin up everyone you're doing great!! also amazing video man keep it up

"Just because there are better people pursuing the same dream, doesn't mean you lost the right to do the same", that dream, that occupation, that knowledge, belongs to us all. It's just, you can love it, dream it, pursue it, your own way. And it will be yours.

My one line is “Eat shit losers” by Kaiser from Blue Lock. That level of overwhelming advantage and confidence is just insane as he launches the ball into one of the most beautiful goal shots ever while upside down in mid air

tanakas line where he says that everyone on this side of the court is your friend. that right there is what locked me into the anime and got me into volleyball. I have always been afraid of contacting other players but hearing tanaka saying everyone on your side is here for you really pushed me past

One of the hardest battles anyone will ever fight in a competitive setting is when you think you have hit the ceiling of your abilities. Tanaka is not average, he is excellent, and a force of spirit for Karasuno; but Tanaka feels that he is at the edge of the mountain, at a point where the jump is too big and if he falls he will never rise again. Luckily he has people like Kageyama who show him even in the darkest of times that he can do more. That he believes in him. It is a powerful moment to get past that mental block of believing you will always be average and it's also the first step to becoming a monster invited to the ball. This might not be the last time Tanaka feels average but every time he fights back and continues to climb that mountain, step by step, he is becoming the prodigy he wants to be.
