@@cravinbob Tony Rice (RIP) has been one of my guitar heroes since I first heard the Dave Grisman Quintet album in the 70's. He is brilliant on this tune! I try to get my middle school kids to listen to the incredible musicianship in this music.

It's all about creating counterpoint. Everyone wants to play solos but nothing is more important in an ensemble setting like this than excellent rhythm playing. Advanced strumming is where it's at.

A little outdated but here goes. I good lead player, in my opinion, comes from a clear understanding of rhythm playing. They are interlinked, you can't have one without the other.

@@willmartin1837 I've seen Rowan play with several of his bluegrass quartets, one having a rock and roll iteration, and he truly is a national treasure. He had a rock and roll band with his brother in the early-mid 70s and they ooze with psychedelia, folk, bluegrass, just Americana music. And he's such a great man. A troubadour. Cold Rain and Snow is a good example and has been his baby for 50 years. He's the reason the Dead ran with it and made it their own. Rowan's name is all over the story of American music.

Was there. Sometimes videos don't live up to the moment afterwards but this one does. To paint a picture, the festival damn near got rained out and they squeezed all the top acts, and crowd, into a packed, humid, but thoroughly happy music hall with a stage on either end. You basically turned around after every set. This one was sublime.

Sharon Gilchrist is playing mandolin. Bryn Bryce Davies is playing bass. Sharon has a degree in classical mandolin from a university in the Nashville area. I think Bryn went to Berkelee College of Music. Sharon and her brother Troy Gilchrist played with Martie and Emily Erwin (Dixie Chicks) in a group called Bluenight Express when they were all in junior high or high school in the Dallas area. They were good even back then.

As of 2020 she is employed as a safety engineer at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and continues to play bass as a sideline to her new career instead of as a full-time profession.
