This is a treasure - the whole set. I can't get over the quality of the two-part harmonies - so great. Thanks for posting these up. They are among my go to vids, where I just need to get a fix of some excellent performances. 10 stars. Fantastic. Love it. Wish there were more.

Every time I hear this I immediately imagine myself as a soldier in the civil war. What it must have been like to live it. What horrors. Our history must never be forgotten.

@deepfryedsports5330, I have been a Civil War reenactor for over 20 years and I can tell you that even without using live ammo and the safety measures in place, most reenactors will tell you that they have experienced what we call a moment of immersion (commonly referred to as an "Aw sh*t moment") where you forget that it is all a show and it takes on a strange quality of "I was there". Mine came during one of my first reenactments where our side was taking "Casualties". I looked around at all the guys going down and thought to myself "We're getting massacred out here! Somebody call retreat!" It was really spooky.

The message of this song gets to me every time. I saw The Steeldrivers back in 2007 or 2008, then I saw Chris when he was with Jompson Brothers. No matter what genre, Chris kills it. He has a beautiful voice that is automatically recognized, not to mention he writes songs and plays the guitar...I must say the fiddle player is an perfect match for Chris's singing and playing.

I've heard this song many times but never really paid attention to the lyrics and meaning. Tonight I played it in the Jeep and actually listened to it! I shed a few years for no apparent reason. It's just Chris's amazing ability to put a story into lyrics and music. It makes the average person from this current time frame understand what it was like for a slave back then to ask amongst one another, "can you run" far and fast enough to freedom. Such an amazing song!

A lot of people did not know he was a hit, even before he was famous. His early music is my favorite. I am a fan of bluegrass and have been since I was little, singing with my grandfather. Chris Stapleton music is my escape now, the one you go to when you unwind. It does not matter that he has changed and went country, but I think his bluegrass will always be my favorite.

I agree with Lynda Miller. I heard the song, "If It Hadn't Been for Love" performed by a contestant on "American Idol" and Keith Urban said that the SteelDrivers was one of his favorite bands. I downloaded the album with that song on it that night and have been hooked ever since. I did not know the name of the lead singer but told everyone I know that loves music to give a listen to The SteelDrivers. Most didn't because of its bluegrass sound (which I love) but when "Traveler" came out and everyone started talking about Chris Stapleton, I told them, "THAT'S the voice I've been telling you about!" Now, they listen! "Can You Run" makes me cry every time I hear it because of the story that it paints.

What a beautiful and heart wrenching song... I couldn't image the excitment/fear that the many people who lived this song must have felt. Make your escape with your beautiful lover, just to see her across to freedom then turn around and join the ranks of the union army to help free the others.

This is one of my absolute favorite Chris Stapleton songs. ..it sounds amazing, but it's also completely NOT the perspective I would have expected in a song about the Civil War written &.performed by a Southern bluegrass band. It completely blew my mind the first time I heard it...well--MOST of Chris Stapleton's songs do that--but this one is really special. He is just freaking amazing ! I had been searching for THAT SINGER ever since I heard "If it Hadn't Been For Love" years ago on a college radio station. Never found it,but instantly recognized it coming out of my NPR-tuned radio at work last year when "Traveller" was released. What an incredible singer & even better songwriter.

Well, I live in the middle of that history and my son & many of his friends are serious Civil War fanatics- they do interpretive history at New Market Battlefield & Gettysburg....and any other place within 200 miles. Plus I'm surrounded by the modern day South...so I generally expect Southern boys to have the perspective of the Confederate soldiers, often to the South Will Rise Again tune. Even the professional historians I encounter at events have never taken the point of view of a slave running for freedom. Not saying it doesn't happen, but I haven't seen it.
@billkammerzell9082
@billkammerzell9082 7 жыл бұрын
Just another example of political incorrectness. Although I have lived on the south side of the Mason Dixon line for 56 of my 66 years I have a similar attitude as Stapleton, in fact, most of the members of this group, who played at a friend's wedding. It is called doing your own research, having an open mind and thinking for yourself. Not very popular in any society. Original thinkers generally wind up on the outside looking in. This guy might get away with it because he will soon be a millionaire and he sings like an angel.
@billkammerzell9082
@billkammerzell9082 7 жыл бұрын
Can you imagine? A southerner who actually thinks that all people are created equally and are entitled to be free? My goodness, that's almost un-American! Face it, the basis for the southern society is still firmly grounded in the infamous "Corner Stone" speech, given by Alexander Stephens, the vice president of the rebellion.
