I've read Ryan's books for 12+ years now and it's crazy to see how much he's grown while consistently being himself. It's very cool to watch. I want growth like that - where I can become a better version of myself. It's hard to know what to keep and what to let go, but Ryan feels like a really good example of how to do it well.

I felt very identified. I also own a bookstore, and also frees me from having to label myself (I don’t consider myself a “bookseller,” I just work in the bookstore). At university, despite having excellent grades, I couldn’t stand being labeled with a degree, so I left (I'm a little crazy). When people ask my young daughter about my profession, "What is your dad?" she finishes me off and saves me: "Nothing" (LOL). She’s wise.

Hey, I was thinking about not finishing my degree a lot some months ago (I'm about 90% through it), as I don't feel like it aligns with my values to be valued based on what I did there (B.Ed. Physics and Philosophy). Like you, I got good grades, but I can't identify with the vibe of the institution and especially the vibe of some of the students getting that same degree. All the more, I intend to help in a museum and bookstore one day or own one. As you have some experience and we seem to share one or to things, could I ask you a couple of things privately? or here, doesn't really matter :D just using my chance to reach out to a person experiencing something similar.

I'm an old nerd. I remember back in the 80s and beyond as nerd culture rose and having the nerd label went from something negative to positive. It initially felt good being able to have a positive identity like that. I kind of wore it on my sleeve for a while but at some point it did become a constraint as it became something to mold myself towards. As well as setting up a mental in group/out group dynamic. Trying to let go of the identity and just be authentic is freeing.

Even though I do generally don’t like labels and box thinking, and I see their use mostly in areas of profession, I have to criticize this. Not ever seeing a value in ego seems very, very privileged to me. Without my ego, I personally, would probably not be alive anymore, just as my brother and sister. Ego is a survival instinct, sounds to me as if you might have never had to survive off of your ego, therefore not seeing the use of it. Yes, on the larger scale, ego does a lot of harm, especially when it comes to certain ideological groups sharing an ego together, but for the individual, it can be Livesaving. And honestly, you don’t seem that humble to me, sounds to me like your identifying yourself with not identifying yourself a lot. A bit paradox, but that’s just my perception. I think ego is not bad in itself, but bad depending on the situation.
@MaxEvans-cz2no

You may be conflating ego with confidence. It's good to be confident in your abilities but ego is a little different. Ego is when you think you are infallible and you ignore all evidence to the contrary.
@vielspaclaas-zo5rm
@vielspaclaas-zo5rm 19 күн бұрын
@ well that is pure ego, which there’s only very few people that are pure ego. But ego does exist in every human being and I do agree that it’s important to be humbled, generally, that’s why I pick honest friends. However I’m still opposed to the saying ego is the enemy, cause if you’d take the ego away from a lot of people, they’d just become suicidal. I’ve kept myself from suicide by ego. Ego is there to survive, so people only have a big ego if they’re surviving, not living. Ego is not the enemy, ego is nature. And we are not above nature. I do believe I know what confidence is, the definition I know is knowing that your self worth is not tied to failure or success, but that it’s tied to going through stuff and coming out stronger. So I’m that sense he had the right definition by my knowledge. However as addition to my comment (I’ve written another one about it) this guy is not trustworthy in my opinion. He’s selling stoicism for making money and to me it seems also for being in a good light. He sells coins which say “memento mori” and other “tumblr philosophical quotes” for way too much money, profiting off of people that look for guidance and help. Also selling books that are free online, instead of guiding people to the website where all of it is for free. So he’s profiting off of people that are a bit lost, and look for guidance, and takes money out of their pockets for stuff which doesn’t have evidence backing up the fact that it helps at all, kind of like homeopathy. He studied marketing, and has written papers and made videos about having the profit of the store or whatever you work for as number 1 priority in this job. Which makes sense looking at his bs online store. He’s a capitalist, which works by making as much profit as possible, which usually works by making the consumer pay too much for stuff they often don’t even need. Which is contradictory to stoicism, cause stoicism is about becoming the best version of yourself possible, which is by the stoic definition bound to how much you care and help people. So it’s Bound to solidarity. Selling overpriced “philosophical bs” to people in need is not stoic, it’s egotistical, coming from a guy acting like he doenst have to much ego and in my opinion putting himself in the light of “being awakened”. So yeah, I cringe. Zyon wouldn’t be proud I’m sure

A label such as "writer" isn't a problem, because everyone understands it's only one of many facets. Much more troublesome are adjectives (and adverbs, and many verbs), because an adjective is really a vague, often misleading or manipulative linguistic abbreviation that represents a relative comparison to an unstated alternative. For example, the statement "X is big" really means X is bigger than Y, for some Y not specified. The threshold between "big" and "not big" is undefined, so "big or not big" is a false dichotomy, but "bigger than a breadbox" has a clear meaning. When playing the game Twenty Questions, the question "is it bigger than a breadbox?" is an effective question, and only a loser would ask "is it big?" because its answer would be uninformative. The problem with adjectives becomes most insidious & manipulative with adjectives such as right, wrong, good, bad, evil, supported, opposed, approved & disapproved. What these have in common is that their underlying relative comparison is either "better than" or "worse than." For example, it's misleading to call something "bad" or "evil" when what's really meant is that it's worse than some other alternative(s). If the definition of "bad" were "worse than some unstated feasible alternative" then it wouldn't be a problem to label something "bad," because everyone would understand the need to ask that the better alternative be specified. But unfortunately this isn't the common definition. It's important to specify the other alternative(s) being compared. Public opinion polls that ask people to use those insidious adjectives, such as "approval" polls, misleadingly lump together people who give the same response for opposite reasons... for example, someone who says s/he "disapproves" of Kamala Harris might mean s/he thinks Harris is worse than Trump, or s/he might mean s/he thinks Harris is worse than Bernie Sanders (and has the order of preference "Sanders Harris Trump), etc. A poll that instead asks people to rank the alternatives would be much more meaningful than the false dichotomies that most polls elicit.

It's frustrating how people in the first world are so consumed by their indulgences and constantly worry about their waistlines or anything else they could think of that day. However, they often hesitate to give back, seeing it too close to communism. It's absurd-you're just being misled. Just making one change to Policy doesn't make someone a communist or a socialist. Psychological reservation: Modern life only confuses and corrupts success. Immature masculinity has completely distorted the meaning of the word "man" today. This is my crazy true story 2020 I even got my wife of 13 years back after 2.5 years of being disconnected on the other side of the country. 30 years old, I turned my back on my life to fix up my mom's house so she had a house to get old and then die in. Lol, when I was done, I was supposed to do the most foolish thing by ending myself Spoilers; I found “Subtle Art not giving a fuck”. I considered myself illiterate at 33 years old. The damn book changed my life forever, And even after all I've said, this is just the tip of my iceberg The world is Doomed as Titanic That's How I'm living... In living color Are you alive? So above so below as within as without. So above, so below as within as without. So above so below, as within as without. That I had somebody's Always guiding me the way through my journey. They are all Personal people that I Cared more for than my sense of self, pride, ego, power, and money. These people are incorruptible, so I can only give them honour with my story: people who have passed on. The only reason I've been able to be here today is if I Stand on the mountain Screaming my Resonateing Chant honouring their stories…. even the devil and god Would team up just help me at this point because all The unused opportunities in the modern world only go down the drain every second sad Waste of skin gone with the wind
