Thank you Rick. I watched this video 3 years ago when I was a Purple Belt and wanted to end my journey. After watching your talk, I was overcome with emotion and began to dig deep and reflect. Next month, I will be receiving a Black Belt in BJJ. I am indebted to you for your inspiring message.

You're welcome. Each one of us is on our own journey. The trick is to keep chiseling away at ourselves.

Just to share and build on that further from my own faith and understanding. In the Islamic tradition authenticity is also referred to as truthfulness (Ikhlas in the common arabic term). Thay say that the provision that never runs out and which is essential to healthy spiritual life is this truthfulness and the more one takes from its provision the more one gets. Furthermore Islam also teach us that essentially all that BS are actually your gifts as part of your trial on earth - the teacher. But adding to that the tradition teach that some of that will never go away, just as you say, and those things are meant to never go away as they are your dear companions and great gifts from God for you to strive and above all realise that you where actually never the one holding the power of change in the first place. In fact you are not the one taking away the BS, doing the chiseling, you are instead the matter and the only true sculptor is God - where submission to that truth and reality, to the will of God, is the only way we truly get to know our own nature and our own Lord. So the final letting go is the letting go of our self to allow for that divine chiselling, or alchemical process, to take place. Though paradoxically that is ofcourse hard work where one needs to do ones part while letting go. There is another metaphor for that commonly used in the Islamic tradition, that of a cup of tea where sugar is added. As long as one believe one is stirring the sugar, there is a separation and a sense of self, but as one practise the letting go of ones management of ones affairs one gradually dissolves into the divine reality and become a witness. There is a hadith qudsi, God’s words transmitted by Prophet Mohammed may peace and blessings be upon him, that says “When I love him I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks.”
