That was the one character that I feel really brought the movie down. I can see where Slowik was coming from with everyone else (not that I agree with murdering them, obviously, but his reasoning makes sense in a twisted way), but this chick has to die... because her parents were successful enough to put her through school without debt? I think they were trying to be funny but it missed the mark for me, I think they could have put more thought into giving chef a more compelling reason for her being part of the menu.

He didn’t kill John leguizamos character just because he didn’t like his movie. No one ever seems to pay attention to what he says right after that. He’s dying because the actor represents everything that chef hated about himself. The Chef didn't decide to kill the actor just because he hated the movie, he picked him because the bad movie and his uninspired performance in it offended him as an artist, having to watch a once successful and passionate actor lower himself to low-effort comedic roles for no reason other than the money. Even though the Chef himself no longer enjoys cooking he still sees himself as holding onto his artistic integrity, something which the fading actor has completely lost, so he was picked to die for that reason.

The actor enjoyed being in the position the Chef was in. The actor also lost his passion and made movies with no love, but he survived by not giving a shit. Maybe Chef Slowik would not be killing himself and everyone if he was more like Actor George. Actors also get death threats from fans who did not like the movie.

This movie is a satire of culinary industry. Like the chef said, the people in there represents the ruin of his art. The food critic and snobs who overanalyze the details and took the joy in eating, the rich men who goes to these fancy restaurants just because they could. All that pretentious bs and feeling sophisticated, when a good ol' classic cheeseburger does the job alright. A good food is a good food. Erin brought back the joy in him of serving good food to a good customer, that he hadn't experienced for a while.

Margot getting angry and slapping Tyler after hearing the truth about him wasn't in the script. She was written to just silently cry a little, but Anya thought that the more visible rage would be more accurate and fitting in that situation. And she was right, in my opinion. Tyler really was a big douchebag (nicely expressed), but the scene where he tries to cook is one of the most uncomfortable and distressing scenes here. From his point of view, he really faced the biggest humiliation he could've ever imagined by being forced to show his incompetence in front of everyone and not being able to be a part of the rest of the night. Everyone did a great job in this movie, especially Ralph. I was so glad to see your reaction to it.

I think people are getting two scenes mixed up. There is an earlier scene where Erin slaps Tyler just after Slowik tells her everyone is going to die, but later she outright punches Tyler when he is forced to reveal that he knew all along.

Everybody who works in food service understands Ralph Fiennes' character. I know I Do. And I definitely have met people like Hoult's character, that think that only by watching tv shows they actually know as much as a chef that had years of study, knowledge of chemistry and ingredients and the years of training that comes along with it. Especially to get to work in high cuisine.

I got the feeling that the barrel scene was a part of the Menu. The Chef expected Elsa to kill Erin, he knew how Elsa would react, how the jealousy factor would come in to play, her fear of being replaced. I think that is another reason he let her go at the end, she fought for her life, even killed Elsa to try and live. I think Chef respected that.

See, there's one major hole in that theory though; the Chef never PLANNED for Erin to be there. That's one of the central themes of the movie; Erin wasn't supposed to be there. It also ties into that line when he drowned the angel investor: "There are no substitutions at Hawthorn." She... was a substitute.

I actually agree reading this.....Elsa even said before getting stabbed "he never told me about a Barrell I DIDNT forget I didn't forget" I think he sent them there for Elsa to kill Erin but Erin fought for her life and he didn't expect yet respected it and she saw what he needed at the end.....the others wound never they all tried abusing power and running...maybe it wasnt PART OF the Menu it was a random plan by Chef on the fly trying to maybe get rid of or test Erin

I always got the impression that elsa was going to be sent "to get the barrel" and that was going to be HER escape. so when she says "you can't replace me" she meant "fight to the death and one of us can escape" - an improvisation once he got to know erin. He is a super competitive and theatrical guy. maybe he thought whichever one came out would secretly thank him for the challenge or something

When I saw the Poster to the movie, I thought it was a comedy drama film about a food critic and his girlfriend try to oust a world class Chef for being a fraud. Then I later learned that its a dark comedy horror film.

Two things. First the guest (except Erin) went through all the stages of grief: Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. Second it seems like each table and the staff represented one of the seven deadly sins: the old man was lust, the mother was sloth, the finance bros were greed, the food critic was pride, the foody guy was gluttony, the actor and assistant were envy, and the chef with his staff were wrath. Just something to think about after watching this movie.

Might have already been said (most likely) but I think the reason Erin's ploy worked was because she saw the photo of Chef as a burger flipper when his career was just beginning and she saw how happy and eager he looked. She brought him back to a place he admitted losing long again; a joy of cooking and serving. He was able to feel that one last time before he committed to the murder-suicide finale and so he spared her. Of course the fact that she wasn't meant to be there to begin with probably helped in that decision lol This was my favorite movie of the year for sure!

The main reason the plot worked is because in the chefs eyes, Erin was a giver, not a taker. It was that connection that allowed her to live. Had anyone else there done the burger ploy, it wouldn’t have worked

There's also that line about how the food "all turns to shit inside you." That has to be galling to a chef; unlike other artists like painters or writers or whatnot, their art is so fleeting. You only have a few minutes or moments to enjoy it and then it all vanishes down the gullet of the customer to be turned into shit. Something as bad as the Leguizamo movie he had the misfortune of seeing has far more shelf life than his most exquisite dish. No wonder he snaps.

I think the critics call this a comedy because they don't want to admit it is a satire of all consumers who over analyze or obsess over the property. I have a fan theory. I think Tyler did not know Chef Slowik was being literal when he gave the warning that everyone would die. He probably thought "Everyone will die" was a metaphor or colloquialism. Tyler did not know he was putting Margot/Erin in danger. He was just being an idiot. Oh Tyler knew what he was doing going into this. He’s so incredibly self absorbed that he hired a call girl to ensure he could reserve a table since the restaurant doesn’t do single place settings. His nonchalant reaction to being forced to disclose to Margot/Erin that he knew they would all die from the get-go tells you everything about his intentions. He didn’t care about her except for her presence confirming his reservation.

My take on the cheeseburger sequence is that Margot was clever enough to get under the chef's skin knowing his history, how much the other guests broke his spirit and convinced him to give her a chance to get out, especially since he already knew she was wrongfully brought into a fucked up situation.

Also she was proving to him that she was a professional. By using her skills as a call girl to giving him an experience. By calling the Coast guard she betrayed them proving that she was not one of team and thus an eater. By fighting back and killing Elise she proved she she wanted to live by going further than any of the others were willing to. By giving him the experience of satisfying a customer. She proved that she was not a not a phone it in for money professional. As well as that she was a giver and not just an eater. A professional chef will not use the wrong ingredients. And at least in those four ways she proved she was wrong for the recipe and and thus did not fit the menu. Also at that point she was pretending his restaurant was a burger joint. And what Burger joint won't let you take food home? He basically had no choice.

The “student loans” part is about privilege and classism. If she had student loans then it would show she is not of a privileged class and thus does not deserve to be “on The Menu”.

Even though I’m not a foodie I love watching movies set around cooking. Movies like Ratatouille, Burnt, and especially The Menu. The theme around this movie is also really satisfying on a personal level because as someone who has worked in the food service industry, people very rarely treat the people that make their food with respect, dignity and general human kindness. So I absolutely get where Ralph Fiennes and the rest of the chefs are coming from. They have absolutely had it with these super rich, uptight, ungrateful, arrogant, pieces of shit. But the absolute best part is when Anya Taylor Joy finally plays the game and asks the chef himself to make her a cheeseburger. Because if you look closely, for the first time in this movie he is happy, because he remembers when he made burgers as a young man not obsessing over perfection and instead *genuinely* happy cooking. And honestly before she left I would’ve asked for the recipe for that burger because that is one of the most beautiful burgers I have ever seen.

Though I do have to say that I interpreted that the head chef in this movie did consider himself, the way he acted and taught his students part of the problem. The fame and position he achieved in the food industry has made him selfish (he wanted to be the center of attention), immoral (he made sexual avances on his sous chef), pretentious (the complexity of his menu is an obvious social commentary) and insincere (he's unhappy and does his work - and serves rich people - against his will). He basically hates what he has become.

I was introduced to this movie by a KZbin short summarizing Jeremy's dish, and I was facinated. And the whole movie is just as offbeat and interesting. Definitely worth the watch.

I think the guests all hated themselves. At one point, the investor bros even say "somebody please shoot me". The staff worship The Chef like they're in a cult or something, but you don't pay 1250 per plate unless also hypnotized by the cult of personality too.

I did enjoy this film, but I think there's a massive breakdown in placing movies into "genres". It's almost like the people who's job it is to affix a genre to a movie are like "Oh, I laughed once, so it must be a comedy". This movie doesn't really fit into normal genres very easily. I don't really like trying to cram complex themes and stories into tiny little genres, and while it is intense at times, I personally wouldn't call The Menu a "Horror".

I loved this movie, loved your reaction. Also the moment she enjoys the burger made me crave one so heavily I had to go get one immediately. As a former food-service worker, I loved how it touched on this sort of attack on the pretentious customer, the reviewer, while saving the former service worker. I work elsewhere now, and the connection I make with others that did as I did in my younger years, we connect better than those that got the job fresh out of parent-paid school; this makes a good callback to the girl that said she didnt have student loans. Loved all of it.

That monologue for Jeremy's the mess dish gets me every time as a chef it's kinda true, our food must be on point at all times but we miss family events time with them and friends, we slam monster and red bulls cos we're often drained of energy due to 12-14 hour shifts 5-6 sometimes 7 days. When addicts go through rehab and are looking for another job they are often told to avoid kitchen work because of the rampant drug use ahhh the chef life gotta love it 😂😂

More than horror, it seems more like terror, since most of the thing is psychological. There are some violent moments but the thing is the build-up to the realization that there is no hope to escape since the perfectionist has thought of everything... except the protagonist.

I watched this movie so many time that every time i found out something new about this movie. Service workers know whose who and Erin spoke his language cause she her self Mrs a call girl. Now for the people that did the cooking I do think they was committed to him and the guest all ate there plenty of times and didn't appreciate anything just like Calling Doctor Shine once was a good actor but when thing got a lil bad he gave up who he was just to make some money as far as his date went she had everything handed to her and don't know how to do anything and use people to get what she wants. The chef is n just tried of cooking and entitled people, I could go on and on about tis movie but I'm not. Y'all did a terrific job and I laughed a lot

Chef wanted to kill everyone in the restaurant because they represented everything that he hates about himself. How they had to give up who they are in orders to make a quick buck. How they had to hurt others in order to achieve greatness. How they had to do dirty deeds in order to keep their reputation in tact. Chef did all of that and he hated it. And in turn, hated them. It's very symbolic and I love it!
