I actually thought something bad happened at first because he was still so overwhelmed and with tears in the eyes, but then I saw the smile on his face and his excitement when he explained everything, and it was just priceless... I busked with my mate in Bristol on Peros Bridge and around there one time we lost money as broke equipment. Also got so nervous couldn't play. Realised that my career as a musician was going to be short.

What makes me choke up is seeing someone literally thank a guitar and music for saving his life, and realizing how much time I waste not making enough of my own music. This was an act of kindness to Oscar but it's also a shot in the arm for so many of us bedroom musicians who fritter away our time on less meaningful things. May your tribe increase, Mary.

Man, I so wish I lived in a place that nurtured busking and musical expression. The police in my town crack down hard on busking. Busking is legal here, technically. By the law we just aren't allowed to sell anything. Accepting donations is fine, so long as we don't sell any product because that would make us a street vendor and you need a license for that. But the police don't care. They say we are vendors when we aren't. They say we are panhandling, loitering, disturbing the peace.... whatever they can think up to run us off. There's a real effort around here to suppress any sort of artistic expression. The only culture we are allowed to express is consumerism, apparently. We never actually get citations, but we always get run off..........and then they have the balls to call this the land of the free.

In 2008, I went to Austin, TX and tried to busk as a 16yr old, kinda as a social experiment. I met so many amazing people and I made just enough money to get a PB&J sandwich downtown. A barber overheard me just riffing the blues and offered me a coke. I love that man and I'll never forget that.

Funny you mentioned Mr Beast, I always thought this was a great video idea, to give busking musicians instruments that they play. It means infinitely more to a guitarist for example if someone gifts them a $2000 guitar then if somebody would give them $2000 cash. Because the cash would go for rent, bills, and whatnot, while the memory of being gifted a guitar is something they will cherish for the rest of their lives

Great post. I busked my way through some lean years on the Toronto subways, in all seasons. Met and played with many different musicians, heard a lot of stories, had some sketchy run-ins.
