Every Marine has stories. For example, I arrived on Parris Island, Platoon 115, one week before SSgt. McKeon marched Platoon 71 into Ribbon Creek and five recruits drowned. But there was no easing or letting-up in the intensity of our training. As one of my DI's said one day when a kid in our platoon passed out and dropped to the parade deck: "Them's the kind that get you killed in combat." Then he marched us away and let the Navy Corpsmen come revive the kid. That's just one of millions of stories Marines have experienced while in boot camp.
@BushidoDevilDog2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the various comments you've posted here, sharing some of your personal experience of what it was like during your time in our Corps. I went to Boot Camp in 1988 in San Diego (2nd Bn., G. Co., Plt. 2082), just like my father (Sgt., Vietnam vet, Purple Heart recipient) did, and was stationed on Parris Island (H&S Bn Service Co.) after serving on Okinawa with 9th ESB Comm Platoon, so I got see and experience both MCRDs, one as a nasty recruit, the other as an NCO/permanent personnel. I was able to revisit MCRD San Diego in 1997 while on libo from my USMCR annual 2-week summer training at Pendleton, and I took my mother and step-dad to a 2nd B.n Graduation in 2007. I revisited Kinville in Okinawa in 2018 (videos of my visit are on my channel), so now I would like to revisit Parris Island and the Beaufort area at least one more time before I kick the bucket.

I will never lose the sound of each of my DI’s ringing out in my head: SDI Ssgt Trumbo, DI’s Ssgt McClellen, Ssgt Lambert, Sgt Nash, Sgt Causey. But honestly there was a moment halfway through 3rd phase when there was perfect harmony. The platoon truly became one body, one mind, and one spirit - that was the day the DI simply gave the order to right face, and forward March back to the squad bay…..with the exception of directional orders, NO CADENCE. There was no need. We created our own cadence, our own pace, our own tone and pride. That was the day I knew we had crossed our own personal and emotional crucible each and everyone of us. What remained was the physical and psychological challenge of the Crucible itself. But essentially we were there spiritually. I will NEVER forget it, and I thank God for it every day I continue to draw breath.

There is no way to adequately express feelings to those who have not been part of an elite group of well trained Marines as you see here. The pride and the brotherhood is unlike anything that a civilian can comprehend. I became a Marine here in 1969 knowing that I would be going to Vietnam. Unlike the Army, where most of the soldiers were drafted (and did not want to be in the military with a war going on) every man in my platoon was there to fight. I was the sergeant in a very fine rifle platoon with a great officer (1rst Lieutenant Case). We were given some tough assignments and this is when you are so glad to have had the training and the pride you see in the men in this video. We suffered heavy casualties with 12 killed and 38 wounded (I was hit by mortar shrapnel, but returned to my Marines as soon as they fixed me in a MASH tent.) My point? There is no greater bond in human existence than that formed by fighting Marines. Note: We inflicted much more damage than we received. In my reports to Lt. Chase I listed 173 enemy casualties during my tour, which, in the type of jungle warfare we were engaged in was outstanding.

"Useful idiocy" is a type of evil. Please understand the historical facts, it takes a bigger man to pull his head out of the sand in order to admit to inconvenient truths: France occupied Vietnam BY FORCE, the French secret security in Vietnam tortured/imprisoned/executed any Vietnamese who resisted their subjugation, while France stole Vietnam's natural wealth and even forced the Vietnamese to assist in their own imperial rape (out of individual survival). During famine, MILLIONS of Vietnamese starved to death while rice was still exported out of the country for French profit. Ho Chi Minh was expelled from his own country (Vietnam) By the FRENCH merely for translating the complaints of his country men into French (so that the French could read what they had to say). In 1919, Ho Chi Minh asked US President Wilson for intervention in helping the Vietnamese on the principles that President Wilson's own 14-point plan for world peace unveiled at the Versailles Peace Conference resulting from WWI: "All nations deserve self determination", but HCM was rudely rebuffed by President Wilson (you know, the "Leader of the Free world"). Unable to find an ally in the "free world", HCM had no choice but to turn to the USSR. However, USSR only helped nations that are aligned to the USSR, and this is where HCM became allied with "Communism". HCM was actually RELUCTANT to align with the USSR, because he didn't want Vietnam to become a pawn in the Cold War (but he didn't have a lot of options). *It was the American hypocrites who drove the Vietnamese into the loving arms of the USSR.* From that moment on, American rhetoric became: "We gotta stop communist expansion into Vietnam" (ignoring that the Americans CAUSED the "communist expansion" in Vietnam). In 1954, the USA forced a deal onto HCM: Accept the creation of the Republic of Vietnam at the 17th parallel (an American dictatorial PUPPET), and we promise to have elections in all of Vietnam. Guess what, the American liars broke their promise, *"South Vietnam" was an American-created dictatorship where the Americans refused to recognize or allow any elections (So much for "freedom & democracy", huhh?).* This kicked of military action by independent Vietnam (and duly helped by China & the USSR). My source: American professors of history. Y00 turning a blind eye to the truth of which side was right/wrong in the Vietnam war (JUST because it contradicts y00r wishful thinking) is evil & cowardly.

Actually, Corey, the sound made by platoons marching today is different from when I was marching to it and for one reason only---today's boondockers have a one-piece sole/heel that is made of some kind of cushioned material, whereas the ones on the boondockers we wore had a hard rubber heel. When we were in unison the sound of 75 heels striking the parade deck at the same time almost sounded like those old newsreels of German troops goose-stepping into Paris. Today's Marines are just as sharp as we were, and I believe they are better trained. One thing that hasn't changed is the sound of each DI's unique method of calling cadence---some are much better than others. We had a junior DI who was almost impossible to march with, and another one who was terrific at counting cadence. I don't know if you've had a chance to return to PI, but I visited there about six or seven years ago on a regular training day. No graduation. No bands. No excited families. Just dozens of platoons drilling. The new platoons were doing it "by the numbers" and the salty platoons were practicing obliques and counter-marches. All of it brought back memories of the days when I was a maggot in Platoon 115 and it seemed as if graduation day would never arrive. I can tell you truthfully, it would be impossible for any old Marine to return to Parris Island and hear those sounds and see those young recruits, and not feel tears of Marine Corps pride. Semper Fi.

Dont regret becoming a Marine. Graduated on the 14th of May this year. It was tough. But it was worth it all.
@wilhard456 жыл бұрын
This platoon is not too bad. Mostly the sound of one heel striking the deck and not a pitter, pitter, boom, pitter, pitter as some are slightly ahead of the beat and some are slightly behind. It is tough. My platoon did it once as we were marching back to our Quonset huts. It was so mind blowing as we marched past the Quonset huts of other platoons they actually came out to watch and listen. Our platoon commander (SDI) was barely whispering the cadence and we all heard him as if he were shouting in our ears. We won final drill but even so we did not match the perfection of that one day. Obviously I still remember it more than 50 years later. Here is hoping you soon to be recruits get to experience that moment of being completely in sync with the other roughly 75 other recruits.

Do all you people remember that feeling of being in a brand new platoon, barely able to march in unison without tripping over each other, and seeing some salty platoon on the parade deck that was nearing graduation and the way they marched? You were in awe of them, knowing they were so close to leaving the Island and you wondered if your day would ever happen. That's what I thought of when I saw this video, though it did seem strange to notice they aren't shouldering the M1 rifle like we carried.

For those of us who went through Parris Island and San Diego, remember when you first arrived and couldn't distinguish your DI's cadence from some other Drill Instructor who was drilling a nearby platoon? You learned very quickly to tune out all the others and respond only to your own DI. Until that happened, the screwups did occur, but in 1956, it wasn't anything a DI's fist couldn't straighten out real fast.

One of my junior DI's (and the best one of our DI's) is alive at 88 and living in Oregon. When I was at Parris Island I didn't realize he was only three years older than I was. I've corresponded with him several times, and told him all of us maggots in his Platoon 115 claimed he was so squared-away he even starched his 782 gear. Of course, we didn't say so back then.

Kilo Company, Pot 3056, summer 1989. We were the last platoon in the company and struggled at everything. I'll never forget one day after evening chow when there were several platoons drilling on the 'grinder' and as the sun sank the other platoons went back to their squad bags, but not 3056. All three of our DIs, the Series Chief Drill Instructor (GySgt Sunnell) & even the company1st Sgt was there with us scrutinizing and 'correcting' every little move any recruit made. It was dark when they ran us into the squadbay, skipped mail, three minute shower time (about 80 recruits) hygiene inspection was Sgt Williams asking if anyone had a problem and the lights were out. Been over 30 years and I can still hear the cadence being called by the SDI.
