Abby is such a strange 12-year-old, not just because she's a vampire, but because she's got a growing obsession with the human boy, Owen. Are her feelings legitimate? Or is it all a tactic to gain a new minion/familiar? Let's talk about it!

Hi Fangirl! I know this story like the back of my hand, so I can try to fill in some of the blanks to help you understand: In Let Me In, according to the wiki page, the creators of this American remake gave Abby a totally different backstory compared to that of her original counterpart, Eli. In Let Me In she was a girl who lived on her family’s plantation back in the later 1600s in the United States before she was turned by her creepy vampire uncle (there’s even a deleted scene of her sharing a flashback with Owen telepathically to show him how she was sexually assaulted and turned which understandably didn’t make the cut). A few centuries later she met Thomas, her caregiver, as a young boy, so no, she wasn’t human at the same time that he was, sorry. He ran away to take care of her, all the while being manipulated by Abby who was just using him to do her dirty work so that she wouldn’t get caught. It is during this time that she met another boy, Jon Dixon, before meeting Owen, who she was very fond of. Thomas, fearing that she was about to replace him, attempted to beat Jon to death and Abby tried to save him by turning him into a vampire, something which she never gave Thomas. However Jon was later killed by another serial killer who was posing as a salesman and who set Jon on fire while trespassing, before being dealt with by an enraged Abby... After this they relocated again, where eventually she would meet Owen, and Abby and Thomas still held resentment for each other over what happened. Let Me In is a rendition of the story that really wants to drive it home that Abby was just seeking Owen out only to replace Thomas, however I prefer the original Swedish film Let The Right One In because it stays truer to the book in which Eli and Oskar actually do strike a genuine bond deeper than Eli has ever known. In the book Eli never meets any of her caregivers as children the same way that Let Me In would have us believe. It’s written that Eli actually met Thomas, or Håkan is his name, as a homeless guy on the streets. Yes, the book actually went with the even creepier idea that you had in mind. Håkan is a disgraced school teacher with a serious pedophilia streak to whom she offers money in exchange for enlisting him as her caregiver. Håkan is repressing his raging lust for the child as well as love for her, and Eli uses this to her advantage. She has done this many times before where she enlists the very dregs of humanity, takes advantage of their natures, and then cuts them loose and runs off when her caregivers run out of ways to be useful. Creepy. As. Fuck!!! In the Swedish film they take great care to minimize Håkan’s pedophilia because, well you know, and it also doesn’t go into how Eli and Håkan met, again, for obvious reasons, so audiences who saw this movie in theaters had assumed that she met Håkan the same way that she met Oskar, and that Oskar was destined to become like Håkan once they’d run away together. And the American film made this interpretation cannon by adding those photographs of Abby and Thomas together. In the book, Eli hangs out with Oskar because she actually forms a bond with him. Unlike Abby, Eli as not trying to initiate the relationship and it is Oskar who is making all the moves, and Eli slowly warms up to him, as is seen clearly in the Swedish film. Also, in the Swedish film, the whole reason why Eli needs to have a caregiver kill for blood for her in the first place is because she’s a reluctant vampire who feels remorse over the deaths of her victims, making her more sympathetic to the audience. Oskar is showing signs of a budding psychopath who, while initially shaken by her revelation of being a vampire, he learns to empathize with her as she explains how she must kill people to survive but she doesn’t want to kill people the same way that Oskar does. Oskar is repressing dark desires to kill his bullies, something that his American counterpart Owen is only pretending that he has but doesn’t, and Eli teaches him how to give into his nature, while spending time with Oskar teaches Eli to be more playful and innocent as she slowly remembers what it’s like to be a twelve year old. The humanity which had long since died within Eli over the centuries begins to manifest itself. In the book Oskar is inspired by Eli to embrace his innocence by choosing to stop pretending to like cool things he’s not really into and throwing away his KISS poster, this ironically causes Oskar to become more mature. And in neither the Swedish or the American films does the vampire girl orchestrate the scene where the boy is drowned in the pool by bullies, at least I’m sure that it did NOT happen in the Swedish film. It’s established that the bullies who try to kill him are brothers who love each other and don’t abuse one another like they do in the American film. Oskar, having split one of his bullies ears with a pole during a confrontation, incurs the wrath of the bully’s older brother in retaliation, possibly because the older brother was feeling his younger brother’s pain and trauma and that he simply snapped. So I don’t think Eli was orchestrating that scene so that she could rescue him as she genuinely cares for him and wouldn’t have put him in harm’s way. Abby, not so much. I wouldn’t put anything past her. It’s also worth noting that John Lindqvist, the author of Let The Right One In, never intended readers to think that Oskar was just running away with Eli to repeat the cycle and be killed off the same way that Håkan was. He even wrote a short story sequel to give the ending that he originally intended for his creation. Here we learn that Oskar agreed to become a vampire like Eli so that they can be together, something that she’d never offered anyone else, because their bond is so deep. And the caregiver cycle Eli had is broken. Hence the title “Let The Right One In”.

She might be a little stunted for her years, but likely doesn't have the mind of a 12 year old. I wouldn't be suprised if young vampires continued to have some sort of residual hormones from whatever age they were when they changed. The Cullens were all mostly matured, in their teens and twenties, but had an intellectually minded family to support each other. If Abby had a mature family or even a mentor, human/vampire, she might have mentally matured more but it's just her and a familiar who stopped going to school to take care of her.

The idea that vampires don't have a reflection comes from how, back in ye olden days, mirrors were made with polished silver. Silver was believed to have purifying properties and so was used in healing practices. This purifying mojo kept the vampire, who was tainted with evil, from showing up. This means that a vampire can show up in photos, video and even modern mirrors. Abby to me sounds like an instinctive predator and she could easily have been around long enough to have this down to a simple science. Made it to the end btw, love ya.

Made it to the end! I don’t recognize Glamour from whatever you said, I’m not big on horror movies but I do recognize it from Cinder, the first book in The Lunar Chronicles since Glamour was a form of hypnosis (or the ability to manipulate bio electro energy as the book’s scientific explanation) that basically brainwashes people excluding Lunar Shells into seeing or feeling things that aren’t there or to make them do things they don’t want to. I probably will never watch either version of Let Me In since I can’t really handle horror movies but it sounds interesting and I really liked your analysis of Abbey.

If you ever get the chance, I really recommend the book, though ill warn you that it’s very dark and uncomfortable. It’s different to the film in that it delves more into the characters pasts and focuses more on different peoples povs. Both the book and film each have their own good qualities. Id say the book does make me see Abbie as a more sympathetic character. She can be manipulative and selfish in it too, but I feel like it makes it more clear that she’s just trying to survive and that she genuinely cares for the boy she befriends. Not dad on the other hand, not so much, but it’s made clear that hes a not a good person in the book and he and Abbie have something of a symbiotic relationship

I saw this movie a while ago and this brought me to rewatch it. I believe that her brain has matured or rather traumatized. Her body stopped aging along with her brain but that didnt stop her from learning or taking in the world around her. She has had 12 years of life, more like 8ish where she was cognitively functioning enough to be self aware as a child and an untold amount of years living as a creature that feeds on humans. For a good number of those unknown years, she must have had to adjust to her situation, perhaps a form of PTSD in having her life as a child shattered. Her old friends may have become food for her at one point, perhaps her parents too. Things as "minor" as divorce and as extreme as being a child soldier can have long lasting traumatic effects for children, and i believe this shaped her mind. Perhaps not a matured brain but a learned one that is crammed full of trauma and mixed emotions over wants and needs. Wants friends and a normal childs life, but needs food who happen to be potential friends. Or are the friends potential food?

I'm surprised you didn't mention Owen's family situation or the detective who ended up being fed upon. Both situations had an effect on his decision to leave. With bullies who were after him being dead and an officer who questioned him getting murdered in the apartment building where Owen lived. I think that all added up to him feeling as if this part of his life was over. Some of it can be Abby's manipulation but it can also be unintentional wish fulfillment. Owen felt useless and like a monster, so things turned out that way. I feel there's a juxtaposition about both Abby and Owen being monsters in their own way. Drawn together because the human world doesn't have a place for them. Just my thoughts. I loved the video, Megan.
@TheFangirlWatches
@TheFangirlWatches 4 жыл бұрын
I think Owen warrants his own character case study. It was getting to be a long video and I was trying to keep the focus on Abby, but Owen's home life is tough to say the least. I get that he's having a hard time dealing with the loss of his dad and his mom is a little nutty, but, at least with his mom, that should be so normalized that Owen is used to living that way. The murder, though, would have sent running. Owen watched her kill the detective and the lady walking her dog too and he still made the decision that he loved Abby (at least as well as he can make such a call at his age, assuming Owen had any free will in that choice). And that's a really interesting take on Owen being a monster in his own way. He does split Kenny's ear with the hockey stick, but that's after a long build up of bullying.

The whole not seeing a reflection thing is bc old mirrors used to be backed with sliver. Vampires cannot touch sliver. Its a whole purity thing. Hi girl from Sweden here! Think the Swedish version is way better - much because how Abby(Eli) is potrayed and her relationships with Owen(Oskar) and the father (Håkan). In the book and in the Swedish film Abby/Eli is seen as a more tragic person. An old person with a mind still like that of a child and Owen/Oskar helps "her" understand who "she" can let in, in her life. The book is really good- with some gruesome things happening - I hope you give the Swedish version a chance and maybe the book also exist in English 🤗

There is a Deleted scene that does show Abby being bitten and turned. Its a very obscure scene ( a bit blurry purposefully) but we see a man dressed in a robe (Almost like an old priest robe) sneak in and feed on her. Also the reason why vampires dont show up in film, cameras, and mirrors way back in the day was because the materials used had trace amounts of silver in it. When they stopped using silver I cant find the answer exactly but I would like to point out that Abbys image would only show up if the materials used to develop the film didnt have silver in it. That and todays Mirrors are made with no silver I think. Just wanted to throw that out there (That and im a Vampirism nerd) The scene I mentioned kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5Dah3iurrugq5I

In some parts of fiction and possibly in some parts of vampire lore, someone needs to both have some of their blood taken by the vampire and receive some of the vampire's blood to transform into one. If a human only receives the blood of a vampire they grow a sort of bond to the vampire and eventually become a mindless slave. Maybe Abby could have done something like this and that's why Not Dad and Owen are so willing to do her bidding in the end.

She most assuredly does not have the mind of a 12 year old though I think she's very Adept at pretending she does. I would suspect that as her familiar gets older her mental level increases along with him in order to keep his interest. Side note oh, I am getting ready to start running the Dungeons and Dragons campaign curse of strahd and in that campaign of these my version strahd is extremely narcissistic, abusive, violent, and bored. A very dangerous combination in a 700 year old vampire.

Yeah I always felt like that final conflict scene might be something lost in translation, because it's not just revenge, it's cold and calculated and just plain sadistic. I almost wonder (theories aside) if the original writer or director didn't take that from his own childhood. But in a movie sense, we go from intense bullying to murder and I feel like we needed a few more sense with Kenny to show him get to that point - so intervention from Abby seems most likely. And good luck with your new campaign! I always tried to have Strahd be more like Lestat from the Anne Rice novels, which... now that I'm thinking about it, is pretty much what you described, lol.

I suppose it's possible (like in the case of children that "grow up too fast") that she's always been manipulative even before she was a vampire.. kids are quite capable of doing that kinda thing to get what they want from people like parents, my nephew does it all the time and he's like, 6. So I think that she was stunted mentally, but since she's her former self, it doesn't matter that she's not maturing more, because she already has those skill sets.. besides, who doesn't want an easy meal, by 12, kids are still dependent on their Caregivers for things like food and overall care.

I've seen both films and read the book; the American film, well, Americanises the story. It makes a lot of the darkest parts (or less ok for your American film) more palatable for the audience; it takes a gay love story about an ancient, PTSD-suffering 12 year old that takes advantage of a pedophile's attraction to get help (and it's implied that they've been doing that for decades) and takes out all of the nastier aspects.
@mridlon1634
@mridlon1634 3 жыл бұрын
If Abby is indeed mentally stunted, then that would fit her within the chaotic neutral (with evil tendencies). As opposed the to a “free spirit”, Abby would more of a “tortured soul” then. If it is all manipulation & deception, that places Abby as chaotic evil (corrupter/destroyer personality). But most likely, I think, she is somewhere in between. Abby seems to have a loose sense of loyalty, perhaps a code of honor, and she may even be in love with Owen. All be it in a disturbingly warped & twisted sort of way. Abby could be seen as more neutral evil (with lawful tendencies) in this case then.

I've seen the Swedish version so many times!! Although my sister said the book was way more messed up then the movies and much more manipulative! I'm thinking abby knew exactly what she was and who she was! Act the part until you have them hooked and eating out of the palm of your hand! Eeeek!

The reason Abbey can be seen in a photo even though Vampires don’t have a reflection. Is because back in Medieval times mirrors were made with silver, and due to there biblical association of purity and truth of god. Demons like vampires can’t be seen in them, we don’t use silver in them anymore today so likely she does see her reflection in mirrors. So she CAN have a photo taken of her in theory- or it’s just some plot hole I dunno.

I just want to say I'm one of those weirdos that has seen Let the Right One In, but NOT Let Me In. Sounds like to me the boy is the sociopath in the Swedish version, whereas the girl is in the remake. Just thought that was interesting

Seen both and you're entirely correct. Owen wants to get back at them, but he's not a cold-blooded killer. There's a great video comparing the two somewhere on KZbin but I forgot how it's called.

If you want more mind-bending films with more than what's on the surface. I highly recommend you watch Tau, a Netflix sci-fi movie. I've watched it more than once and learned so many different things. Including comparing the events to a certain superhero's fate. I won't say who.

I liked Let me in precisely because of how ambiguous it is. It could be as a dark romance story about two young outcasts falling in love or the tragedy of a poor abused boy being groomed by a monster into becoming her slave. Persoanlly i prefer to look at as a romance story. Maybe its because of how sympathetic i found Owen and i dont the story to be for him to be used and discarded by Abby. Plus, Owen was an extremely skinny, timid 12 year old boy i cant see him being a useful familiar. If anything Abby would have to take care of him.
@TheFangirlWatches
@TheFangirlWatches 4 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. Owen is kind of a wimpy kid, but I think her "dad" was the same type of kid. The only real different is that Abby groomed and intimidated the adult into becoming a killer. Owen already shows a knack for harming others, as was seen with his bully, so maybe Abby saw that potential in him? Hard to say, but you're right it is extremely ambiguous, and bleak to say the least.

@@TheFangirlWatches i wouldnt say that Owen had a knack for harming others. He fought back against Kenny exactly once when he tried to throw him into a frozen lake and that was after Kenny had hurt and humiliated him daily. Considering how horrible owens life was, i thought he came across as a very gentle character. The knife and tree thing was probably his only coping method of the constant bullying he endured. The spying on people i saw was more due to his loneliness and curiosity than being perverted or creepy.In his scenes with Abby he came across as rather sweet and innocent ie offering her his rubix cube as a birthday present, buying her sweets, even in the scene where abby literally crawls into his bed naked to cuddle with him he doesnt do anything Like i said, im more partial to the optimistic interpretation of the story, that abby genuinely loves him and wants to be with him forever.

It is beautifully done, but, it has been about 10 years since I’ve seen the two movies back-to-back. I remember them being extremely similar. Not a perfect shot-for-shot remake but the English version did do justice to the original imo.

i dont like how you say 12 year old's cant manipulate people, my cousin got a grown man to buy her meals everyday when she was 13. maybe abby was part of a broken family before she got turned into a vampire.
