Does anyone ever feel a main problem is having a very unbalanced view or relationship to money and lacking examples?? Like in my family I feel I see 2 extremes... Either people are tending to overspend and be financially irresponsible or they are extremely stingy and almost unhealthily obsessed with not spending any money on anything 😢 so I feel in my life I've only ever gone from one to the other extreme without ever really thinking about the purpose of money, questioning materialism and being actually in charge of your finances and contentment but rather doing what everyone does
@sherynemmanuel2 жыл бұрын
Ooo I know that feeling. I'm glad my parents are fairly balanced. My dad is frugal while my mom is more lenient when it comes to spending. I hope you'll find balance in your financial journey 😉
@ampersignia2 жыл бұрын
I think that’s because binary thinking is easy - so simple to just avoid all spending by closing yourself off to experiences and media, and also easy to go ham with it by saying yes to everything without looking critically. Learning to decide what’s worth it and what’s not is hard. I think it’s worth learning.

Check out the book You Need A Budget. It changed my whole mindset on spending all or nothing and I really think you'd get a lot out of it too since that's something you say you haven't had good examples of!

I know exactly what that feels. My parents are very frugal so when I started earning my own money and got a credit card, I got into terrible debt. And when I got out of debt, I became extremely frugal and wouldnt even do the things I wanted to do. But I feel now I am more balanced. I think carefully about what I actually want like more travelling and trying different cuisines. So I just budget for those and stick to it. The best part is that all of these experiences only took about 14months so not too much time wasted learning those life lessons

I go on a second no-buy year. Last year I wasn’t buying clothes, shoes, begs and was buying skin care on a one-in-one-out basis. It taught me so much. I continue into 2023, but I now know what i actually need, and I will be buying it: white sneakers, trouser suit, trench coat and leather jacket

Shawna you are literally the best. I didn’t think I’d want to do another no buy after doing one in 2022 but it was bloody brilliant. I’ve achieved so many goals. I feel like I’ve been plugged back in and I’m loving life. Your channel really helped me to succeed. One thing that always stuck with my was the insanity of ‘buying to try’. I’d think nothing of dropping £30-50 on something to try it, when that’d be enough for a weekly shop. Taking control of your life is such an empowering step. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Excellent video. I needed this pep talk. I’m doing a no-buy for 2023 . I’ve technically already started this month. I got our Christmas shopping done in November, so no excuses. I have a very expensive hobby that I fell into a few years ago and I can no longer justify paying as low as $500-$2,000 for high end collectible dolls, not to mention all the clothes and accessories. Like seriously! What did I get myself into! I love this hobby but when I look back and do the math of the thousands of dollars I have spent on not only on this hobby but other mindless impulse buys at Target or TJMAXX or Barnes & Noble, it’s sickening. All this money I’ve spent, me alone, on non essential items that are cluttering or I end up giving away because I didn’t need it to begin with. I’m doing this no-buy because it’s necessary and I catch myself scrolling looking for stuff to buy and have to tell myself this isn’t what you want, you’re bored or you’re sad or whatever. I’ve come to realize I need to replace that dopamine hit from purchasing with saving. I need to switch my mindset to be excited to save. And to do that I’ve been withdrawing the money I would have blown and tucking it away. It’s already a small little stash and I’m liking it. It’s a struggle not to look for something to buy but it’s paying off when I withdraw the cash, tuck it away rather than hit purchase and the money is gone forever.

I am convinced! I will plan to do a replacements only no buy for clothes, household items, and beauty products, with an allowance of six non-essential, non-replacement items for 2023. Will you film a video about your no buy rules for 2023 and another about the items you purchased with expenses for 2022, I hope? Your essay-style content is so informative and interesting that I listen to these videos twice!

Yesssss!!!! Love to hear it. I'm personally not going to go on a no buy next year, but will be continuing the year of contentment. I'll definitely talk about what next year's project will look like in the next couple of weeks. This year I flip-flopped a lot between no buy or not, and I feel like I found my groove. So much so, I'd like to tackle some other shopping-related struggles next year.

Shawna, I'm not going on a no-buy, but it's not because you weren't convincing, because you completely were right on the mark with this. It's just that the pandemic already forced me to go on a no-buy for a year, and then a low-buy for the next two now, because I stopped going out to the drugstore or TJ Maxx every day. I had bad FOMO and stopping like that actually did not feel very good at first, but makeup shopping was really becoming a problem because I just wanted every I saw, and I wanted to be part of the world I saw on beauty KZbin. But the last almost three years have given me a chance to get to learn my collection and love what I have, learn my preferences and just recognize the beauty of each thing I already bought. I started to love makeup for how beautiful it was and not how it made me feel when I bought it or to stop those feelings of longing to have it. Now when new collections come out, I can see what looks like one or more things I already have. A new line of lipstick comes out and the colors are so beautiful and appealing, but knowing my collection now, I know I have at least one product already in that color and that formula, and the more I buy, the less I can use the things I really love and enjoy before they get too old. There will always be more new lipstick to buy, when I finish enjoying some of what I already have. If someone feels like they don't have a healthy relationship with buying, or their collection or the thought of buying more of their item causes anxiety, I completely recommend a no-buy to process those feelings and figure out the why behind it. Great video!

I started my no buy year Dec 1 and you have been a huge inspiration. Most no buy spaces I’ve been in has been all about minimalism and anti-consumerism. I’m not a minimalist and I don’t think I ever will be. I’ve seen your journey this year in contentment and realized that’s what I want: contentment with what I have but focusing more on the joy of things than the number of things. I hope that makes sense. Im going to read Marie Kondo’s books as well. I really enjoyed your video talking about her method. I’m looking forward to how my mindset will change this year!

Wonderful video! I look forward to more from you this month - particularly, a "how to be bored" video. I don't particularly feel that I have an issue with buying stuff, but I'd love to have less. In July 2023, I expect to be moving again, and I'd love to move with less. Having less physical stuff would make packing easier along with moving. I don't see myself finishing up a significant amount of makeup products, but in terms of skincare, I could have a lot less. So a No Buy would be perfect for me in 2023. Additionally, I feel that beauty products make wonderful gifts. This being said, I don't need to buy more when I can add new palettes, perfumes, medium-high end foundations, bath bombs, and even candles to my birthday and Christmas wishlists. This allows others to gift me beautiful things I want instead of me looking things to buy around holidays to add to a wishlist because I already bought everything I wanted.

I did a no buy in Jan and Feb this year and loved it, that was when I found your channel and the whole world of KZbin no buy, low buy and panning. It went downhill massively from there to be honest but I did stick to two no buy goals - no new jewellery or makeup except replacements. Failed in other ways and have not saved anything at all, but I am going to start again in Jan and do alternate months so I don't go crazy when I let myself buy anything. I am an all or nothing person usually and I think this way might work for me.

Hi from 2024 ! I have started a no buy recently, where I mainly decided not to buy : clothes & accessories (I have more than enough), makeup & skincare (I want to use up what I have before buying anything new), books (I want to read all the ones I have), and doordash (I will occasionally go to the restaurant, but at home we shall cook every meal). I realised I was buying too much crap and it wasn't aligned with my values or financial goals. Your videos are really helpful ! 😊

Love your perspective of a low buy as an opportunity. For me framing things like this as having an opportunity / the privilege to do it and categorizing them as a form of self care and self love really helped change my approach regarding consumerism, dieting, fitness etc. It's not an imposed hardship, or deprivation, its self care and needed maintenace in a way
@shawnaripari2 жыл бұрын
100%! Sometimes I can still fall back into a mindset of: this sucks or tfeeling like I just have struggle through it to be "better" or "healthier." The mindset makes it actually feel like a struggle...and then it's not fun and sucks and then I don't want to do it and then I'm more inclined to do all the things and participate in the habits I don't want to. Our minds are wild and incredible! They can be our friends or enemies. I like your framing of self-care and self-love in particilar.

I feel like so many of us live our lives carrying a "scarcity" mindset, and that is something I want to heal in my life this year and moving forward. Growing up low income it has been ingrained in me that there is "never enough" whether it's food for the family, clothes in the closet, etc. so I carry around this idea that I need to consume, I need to bring more into my life because what I have is not good enough. I'm trying to protect myself from something that's not happening anymore. My life now as an adult is safe and comfortable and I need to remember that when I feel not good enough for not having the newest makeup release. Those are the two things I tend to spend my money on and I need to focus on using what I have. I do have a few projects that I need to get supplies for, but I am going to put that off until next month because it doesn’t need to be done right now. I had already instituted a no buy/low buy on makeup and skincare in 2022. I could only replace items that I used up, and I did not have a backup or an alternate I could use. I am using up haircare products that I already had but was not using. But I am going on a no-buy for crafting/planner supplies. I have so much washi tape and planner stickers that it will take me years to use them. I want to pay off the remaining debt so I can use the extra money I'm not spending on crafting items and make a dent in 2023. You had great points about enjoying what we already have and finding ways to fill our time when we are bored (besides shopping)! Great video.

I think you convinced me Shawna! You called me out repeatedly here lol. I definitely cope with things by spending. For as much no-buy content I consume, both times I've attempted a no-buy in the past it felt bad and like a punishment and therefore it was definitely impossible to do for a year. I've become a much more thoughtful consumer over the years, but I still make some impulsive choices and I really want to save more money. Sign me up! No Buy Class of 2023!👩🎓 The point that struck a chord with me most was when you challenged the default mindset of deprivation, instead encouraging me to see that this is an opportunity and that time will pass regardless. Knowing this, why wouldn't I want to break out of my comfort blanket of excuses and procrastination, and actually DO SOMETHING within the next 365 days, to develop into somebody whose habits are more aligned with their values?! Challenge accepted. No ifs, no buts. I'm in for 2023. All year. No "but holiday releases are my weakness". No "Birthday exemption". Growth and resilience are built in hard times, not easy ones. Thanks for the reminder not sure if I want to do no buy the whole year. But went overboard with makeup towards end of year just became easy with paying all these extra expenses for birthday holiday and car repairs. Lucky I was able to pay off my debt mid 2022 and have consistent savings. One thing I wasn’t prepared for is when I started no buy and was following successfully I wasn’t any happier so the reason was still there. Or I focused too much in one area. Hoping to have more balance in 2023! Just was thinking would like to increase savings to help move to another state. Thanks again for extra motivation.

I started my no-buy in June 2022 so currently still in the thick of it, but you convinced me to start it! Everything you said hit the nail on the head as I'm going through this process. It's been an awesome opportunity to get to know myself and change my habits for (what I deem) the better. My motivation for the no-buy wasn't because I went into debt or was struggling with money, but because I was spending way too much on makeup and was feeling overwhelmed with how much I've accumulated. This video has given me an extra boost to keep going till June 2023! Thank you for your hard work and words of wisdom 🙏 I always look forward to these commentary style videos!

I’m doing a no buy on books this year. I went to so many bag sales and everything that I have too many. I love books but I have so many in my collection I haven’t touched. I’m also going to do a low buy with clothes and makeup. I haven’t bought a lot of makeup this year but if i run out of things or there’s something i really want i’ll get it. there hasn’t been a lot of things i can’t talk myself out of though. I have way too many clothes though and i have no where to put them. Yet I keep buying more at least once a week. I think this will help, especially because I’m paying for community college and am struggling a little bit.

Yes, you convinced me to go on a no-buy for 3 months and then reevaluate. Not a year...yet. I don't have a lot of stuff. The only furniture I have is a desk and a bed. No living room furniture. I buy all my clothes from thrift stores. Since I work from home, I rarely buy clothes. So I feel like I don't need to do it for a year. I might want to decorate my place cheaply or buy a sofa for the living room. If I had a lot, I would do it for a year. Thanks for the inspiration.I will be watching this video again.

I kind of try it the other way around and think about what I am going to buy next year. I have trouble with feeling restless and anxious, a lot of that has to do with socila media and always feeling like I am on. I think shopping makes us feel normal and to compensate a lot of people shop a lot. This past year I spend a little bit more money to start figuring out what I actually like in my free time. For next year I want maybe some bigger things added into my life like a proper desk, a fantasy book series(when the one I have is finished), have fun with my hobby(miniature painting) and I am considering getting myself a nintendo switch with animal crossing new horizon, maybe some horse theraphy and a day to an amusment park with my boyfriend. I need something in my life. Hopefully I can start enjoying long form content more like a podcast about miniatueres and minimalism so I can get myself to stay off social media. New habits and Low-buy are great starting points, for me it was minimalism. I never had a problem with overspending, but I have had a problem with focus and letting people walk all over me, I felt I had lost myself. I slowely now realize how much gets marketed to you, especially when you are vonarble and looking to improve your situation. We have our default selfes, so in my experience, any changes that you want to make has to be easy, so you will not change back. I feel like I have emproved and feel like a more critical, open and happier human. I am oke with that, now I want to feel like myself and not let daily pressures get to me.

I’ve done no buys before (up to a replacement only year) and getting back on the wagon in January but one thing I struggle with is the ‘stock up’ mindset. I don’t normally buy backups but before a no buy I feel like ‘If I have to replace my concealer in January, I won’t be able to stop there so I should just buy one now and then I can do a no buy for like 6 months!’

ALSO YES! i did a, less spend & cash envelope approach this year. Which I love a lot, I will continue to do cash envelopes system. But, I think I'll do this too. I'm on the mend of fixing my credit, which I didnt mention below. But that's also a goal I'm keeping up on the past 3 months & so far, doing well! Growth feels awesome! Where is the community tab so I can vote? =/

New subscriber here. I tried doing a no buy year in 2021 and 2022. In 2021 it lasted until March and this year in May. This coming year in 2023 I will try again 🤞 I will succeed this time.

I've been on a no buy for everything besides food-related purchases this year. It's difficult, rewarding, and makes you see the world and your habits in a new light. I'm about to attempt a no spend January, this time excluding all food-related purchases other than groceries (i.e. eating out, fast food, buying lunch instead of bringing it to work) and sticking to a specific budget when grocery shopping. I've also just started cash budgeting with sinking funds and bills. I'm hopeful this will help me visually and logically understand where my money is going. My goal for 2023 is to become debt free. Let's get it 🙌✨

I am late to the party by a few weeks but I have started an official No Buy for 2023 :) As I watched the video I wrote down my thoughts on each topic you presented and by the end I was convinced. I am getting married in October and while I have paid for a lot of stuff in full already that is another driving factor for my No Buy. I want to make sure I am not scraping by the time the wedding comes and being stressed. I know I can do this :D

First video I’m watching of yours, going to subscribe:) I love all the points you said in the video. I’m going to try a low/no buy next year because I’m trying to buy a camper at the end of next year. I’ll try to set aside some “fun” money for myself when I want to go out with friends. My problem is I don’t know how to stick to a budget😓 I’ll need to make one that’s realistic though and based on monthly expenses. I also want to increase my credit score too.

Great video! I just found your channel. Definitely don’t have a makeup shopping problem- I have literally one mascara and concealer- but I have been thinking about doing a no-buy anyway to save money, be more content, and to give myself more opportunities to enjoy the hobbies I already have stuff for, like sewing clothing and making art. I’m gonna go for it!!

I think a cool type of video would be convincing us that everyone can wear and look good in x color lipstick or y color eyeshadow - whatever you feel is the right answer to that question and people might need convincing to try it. And as someone who accumulated 45 red lipsticks man do I love them!) before going on a no-buy even though my husband thinks I look terrible in it, almost everyone out there will not need to purchase anything to have a lipstick in hot pink, dark brown, bright red, deep berry, green, concealer nude - whatever crazy color they bought and can't bring themselves to wear! Or blue/green/red eyeshadow, purple blush that came along with the palette they really wanted etc. etc. etc.
