Another vote to the skeptic/agnostic/atheist discord. As for making friends, I've had a lot of luck with mutual friends - my friend and her partner grabbed a bunch of us for DnD and we're all close now. They also have game days (pre covid) and invite people they think would get along together. I've also found that my theatre/art kid vibe lets me get away with walking up to someone like "Hi! You've said like 3 things in this group and that shirt is amazing - want to talk and see if we'd match as friends?" At worst, I'm the weird theatre kid (meh) and at best, I've had people be really relieved that someone else took the first friendship step.

I’m already asocial and being almost 30 this year... I just haven’t had much success with making friends. It’s scarier than when I was younger. If it wasn’t for my tiny group of online witch friends I would be lonely. The pandemic adds another layer too: I haven’t seen any friends for a whole year because I want to be safe. Online is definitely a good option!

Some great points here! 👍It seems to me that some elements of unhealthy economic disparity and capitalism are major contributors to communal breakdown and the cascading impacts this has on loneliness and division. An irony I had to face in my life was how hiding parts of myself to potentially avoid conflict or rejection would actually stop me from finding the "right" people at different parts in my life. While discovering and embracing my introversion has been crucial for my well-being, I still completely agree with you on the contextual elements of socializing! I especially don't appreciate it when people use "introvert" as a label for medically treatable social anxiety or antisocial behaviours/hatred of people. This video felt timely for me because serendipity/ambiguity is a force I'm actively trying to hone and become more at peace with in my rituals because I've had a history of being really disrupted by change or feeling "out of control". 🙏

I'm glad I'm not the only one who makes bold comments like that. I agree it's worth it. And granted I am personally able to maintain my established boundary with the app itself, I'd be happy to join a discord group. Discord and I... we have a turbulent history, a tale of addiction and abuse, but also one of love and belonging. lol In any case, it's been nice to happen across your channel. It has been many years since I found an eccentric and thoughtful youtube channel of this sort, and even longer since I found one which I consistently connect with. :D

Please do, I will be happy to join. I saw many groups on discord but most are full of "true believers", conspiracy theories, science denial, anti vax, and all forms of madness. I don't feel like I belong in these spaces, nor will I enjoy socializing there.. If you could organize a server specifically for atheist practitioners it might be a good place for all of us to meet new friends and discuss spirituality under terms that we are comfortable with, I think it will be very worthwhile.

I love this video. I travel a lot, and I use that as an opportunity to make new deep connections. Easy to avoid small talk when you only have limited time to meet new people, and I often develop very deep bonds with fellow travelers. And I'm an "introvert" and definitely was a goth teen (still goth)

I’m very hyped for the discord idea!! Discord has during the pandemic basically replaced my social life since it’s now impossible to maintain irl, but even before that it has been such an awesome thing. I think I’m closer to my discord friends than to almost every other person irl. Idk how terrible it’d be without them now during the pandemic.

I joined a skeptical/atheist witchy Discord and got told that my experience of adulthood not being everything it's cracked up to be wasn't valid. Almost every community I try to join to find friends I usually end up leaving a couple of weeks later because someone is needlessly spiteful.

Okay, the observation (which I think is generally true!) that a beginning friendship needs 20-40 hours over a three week period. The good news means there’s nothing wrong for me! The bad news, well, yeah, other than work, it’s going to be hard to get this much social traction going. And/or perhaps an online community such as Discord, which personally may or may not be my cup of tea. I wish everyone all the best. 😊 There are so many ways to be rich.
