I have a great respect for the guys who take so much time on mobile installs whether it’s for competition or daily use, not a lot of room to work with considering vehicles and some times can become frustrating. Yeah for a bigger antenna on your roof or some center mass of your car metal, if you just put a hole in there in a real long antenna you're going to end up realizing that that's just a big can opener at some point!!! It might be about the same time you realize that the hole just keeps getting bigger bigger and it's not that it's the antennas loose it's just that the antenna run out of space to grab. Guy you had my van before me didn't use a backer plate or a strong puck mount and he just put the thing on there with basic minimal attachment for any antenna. If I was to put my antenna on there and drive it would have been like the guy before me I seen him take a left turn, his antenna turned right and then he took a right and his antenna turned left!!! I said how do you talk anywhere bro?!!! I told him it's a problem, he said No it's not a problem!!! 😮😅 Yeah he was having problems but he was in denial he was just thinking that the amp is just not putting out enough or the coaxes loose or that there's a bad ground wire on his radio!!!😮 I mean come on bro. Come on. Really??? It's like it's like a plunger just left on a toilet wobbling back and forth but it's not actually mounted to s**t!!!!!😅😮 I Don't have a puck mount and not going to install in center of roof as have converted van to RV and don't want CB antenna connector and coax coming through to my head!!! I use a triple magnet mount with a little tape on the magnets to roof, just to make sure they don't pop up while going over speed bumps, because that clomping noise on the roof bugs the hell out of me and I like the additional hold tape gives me when I'm traveling at 90 mph down the road, it's that sense of security that I need!! We could tell you story about a mangle antenna? Have a full size Chevy van with 102-in whip on top and then get that thing towed on a flatbed and then have that truck drive underneath overpasses they're only 14 ft tall!!!!!😅🎉😮😢

For my Mobile Rig (planning for a few years) I bought myself a 2015 Texas Highway Patrol Pursuit Tahoe... My target vehicle was the Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV) over the Special Service Vehicle (SSV)... According to my research it has some things the SSV is lacking... The Radio/Computer technology that is engineered into these vehicles is impressive.. If you don't have to have a New vehicle these should be considered, especially if you're looking for a radio rig.. Plans are to incorporate my CB, mobile GMRS and my Ham.... Two are in and constantly being relocated trying to get it set up so that any single radio or all can be operated while driving safely...LOL..... Mr BBI certainly knows his business and I've learned a lot watching the videos.... Keep It Up & Thank You... 44Dan KK7RBE, WSCW671, KYQ9013 (CB 1969)

Im almost certain your suburban's entire body and frame is all factory bonded by standard welding and bolting not glue like you keep saying. Use multimeter and youll see nearly all the metal in your vehicle is at the sane potential to your main and add on batteries (if said batteries are properly/heavily grounded to engine and chassis) Only possible resistance will be doors if plastic washers are used in hinges. I think only bonding that would make a noticeable difference is 1 strap on each door. Id put ferrite beads on all your car audio speaker wires and rca cable. For magmount its important to a solid connection between the foil film under the magnet and the internal antenna ground.

Thank you for this. I've had to deal with a ground pigtail to the puck before. It causes the feedline to radiate, affects SWR, and can cause RF microphone feedback. A quick fix is to clamp split ferrite beads over the coax and slide them up to where the ground pigtail exits the coax. Looking forward to the next installment!

That first whip antenna that you mentioned was made by Motorola is actually branded by Motorola and Harris, but is made by PCTel. It is not 0-6 meter, it is 136-174, 380-520 & 7/800 MHz. It is a 1/4 wave on VHF and is very wide-banded and works very well. They are what we use on our system for all 4 bands.

Excellent video Luke. One quick question. Where do you get the connectors to make your "ground lug" to the shield side of the rg-393? Do you make them yourself?. Tnx and 73
@andrewevanoff11923 жыл бұрын
What are you going to run in there? The antenna looks like a CB antenna. You mentioned several alternators and additional batteries. What power will you be running? I don't know much about CB but isn't it limited to 4 watts on AM mode? Do you need a special license for high power? BTW, I've been running mobile HF for close to 20 years. Currently I use an Icom IC-7000 and a Tarheel 75A antenna. I agree with you about grounding and bonding. I did similar things in my 4Runner but the most important was to bond the exhaust to the frame in several places. Also, I bonded the body to frame and the rear axle to frame (to keep any RF current from pitting the rear bearings. Unlikely but possible). Prior to that, after I installed the radio and tried transmitting on 40 meters while driving, the check engine light came on and the vehicle went into limp mode (greatly reduced power). I'm glad I had an OBD2 reader with me and was able to clear the codes and get home. It would have been a major trouble if I didn't have the scanner with me. We were way out in the middle of nowhere. I highly recommend having one if you run a high power transmitter. Bonding the exhaust fixed the problem and the codes never came back.

That stuff you call glue is called sealer. It doesn’t glue body panels together. It seals the joints that are spot welded. I’ve been in the factories that make GM trucks and there are an army of robots that spot weld the bodies together.

The only thing I don't understand, for the grounding is super, but at the wattage you talked about running, and the electronics that is involved in todays vehicles, how do you keep from getting into that ??
@BoxBuilderIdaho11 ай бұрын
Well the thing that we've worked out is the RF will stay on the outside of the vehicle for the most part. Some of the higher frequencies get blocked out by the just simple things like the tent that's in the windows. You ever noticed how your garage door opener sometimes won't work if your vehicle is just a certain way and there's too much window tint in the way.. that helps put a good grounding system a little bit of properly placed ferrite the wires that go to and from the electronics aren't residents of the RF just kind of passes right on by. I really wish in modern vehicles they would do Twisted leads on most of the electronics that would help so much

Your only going to run one antenna why not the middle of roof. They say to make the perfect ground plane ground needs to be even on both sides. Huge power you can run a coat hanger tuned. But I go parked and run a 102 inch whip center of roof worked the best. I never got a match with two antennas for a true beam. I believe the feed antenna would have to be the back. I did not feel like putting use less holes in the roof. The 30k predator is a hell of a antenna 7 feet in the center of my highlander. You did a excellent job on the roof liner. I understand your more directional on the back signal will follow the longest ground path but two antenna would be way more direct with the long ground.
