Well at least it's not a multiy (4) gyrotron tube build. Requiring cooling ponds. Producing 40 MW of RF. Talk about an antenna farm. Thx for sharing brother.

, each device is separately plugged into a wall outlet with an Earth ground connection that is common to the electrical distribution system. As a result, a loop is formed, which can act as a loop antenna

Smiling! Always wanted to build one, I built a one holer in 1976, been modified some over the years but still runs well, use it almost ever week on 75 meters. Grounder Grid, 3950 Volts DC puts out about 1500 watts with Icom 7300 driving it, little more with the TS 830S. Once had a 5000-volt AC transformer in it running it on a big old Variac, but once you passed 5700 it would find its path to ground. Not sure how much power it put out but would bounce the needle off the peg like it was on the 100-watt scale not 2000 on a Drake W4 meter. Still have the transformer but need capacitors to handle it and I dropped the variac on one of the many mods and busted the wiper arm off. Home brew Filament transformer on a switch and never had a problem in all these years, but like the idea of the variac. 73 Ed/K5EDD

Looks good I would add it's a shame all the control circuity is from the 1930s. this is a good thing only to a point, if you have a fault there will be damage sorry relays don't work that fast and energy stored in caps will go somewhere. No need to explain why you guys do what you do, I already know the answer. Right on on the stainless steel hardware. Please NEVER buy hardware from China; the good hardware comes from Taiwan. I ALWAYS shop by Country of o origin. Never China, for any reliable electronics Unless You have No other choice. I have watched enough videos to know you follow this to a degree. I started in CB back in 68 I was in middle school, got bit by the electronics but four years before. Got out in 96, after doing radio mods, repairs, and lots of amplifier bias mods, I started doing those in 1975 to TPL 11 meter amps. Built a few tube and solid state amps from bare metal 1972 to go behind my Siltronix 1011B. I am an old Bat now with a Ham license. Love working on gear and I still Do. Keep up the good work.

I think they use deionized or distilled water to cool them. For the megawatt level tubes they use distilled water.

a few years ago I demoed a comark transmitter after wiring it's solid state replacement. it was a 4 section. The tubes were on a caddy that rolled into place in the cabinet. neat setup. the HV supplies were in another room on the opposite side of the building. unfortunately they decided to abandon the supplies in place. oil filled transformers with submerged rectifier boards and filter caps contained in a single very heavy cabinet. 22.4kv, if I remember correctly. been a few years. they ran the high voltage leads in rigid conduit to the transmitter cabinets. (very well grounded rigid conduits, I might add)

So what kind of circuit will this amp need to power it?
@johngalt7382
@johngalt7382 13 сағат бұрын
Just my rough guesstimate, but if the the thing is 50% efficient overall it will be peaking about a megawatt. At 240 volts single phase that would be about 4160 amps.
@HansCSchellenberg
@HansCSchellenberg 11 сағат бұрын
@@johngalt7382 So at 480V 3 phase about 200 Amps! Yeah, going to need to run that out of a big commercial building...or a great big diesel generator. About 100 KW average right?
@johngalt7382
@johngalt7382 11 сағат бұрын
@@HansCSchellenberg at 480v it would still peak over 2000 amps, averages would be less, and that ain't even counting the 30 or 40kw for the driver amps.

That is wild. I don't my ass from a hole in the ground as far as RF stuff goes. Just surface level stuff, and almost entirely on the RX side of things. But I do find all this incredibly interesting, and you do explain things in a way that even a layman like me doesn't get completely lost in the woods. But that rig is some next level stuff. Having to put in that much forethought to account for x-ray emissions, good Lord. Absolutely wild to hear where that tube came from. That is one heck of a project you all did there. Impressive as all heck. The launch was beyond cool as well. I wish I had been old enough to catch the Apollo missions, but I missed the last of those by a few years. One of the things I got a huge kick out of was when I got a chance to see the Liberty Bell 7 on display after they had fished it out of the ocean. It was hilarious seeing all the crap they found inside it. These days, everything is done as sterile as humanly possible. Seeing all the junk they found in that capsule left by the engineers was just hilarious. Plastic cups, a whole pile of cigarette butts, little taped up wads of coins they hid up behind the control panels and under the seat so they could retrieve them after the mission and give them away as coins that had been to space, the odd tool or two, just random crap that fell out of a pocket or whatever. It was a very cool thing to see. They were also able to analyze what had happened after splashdown and clear Gus Grissom of any fault for the hatch blowing off early and sinking the capsule. It's a shame he couldn't be there to hear it himself and get the apology he deserved, but at least it did get sorted out after all.
