You are a true craftsman. You have saved me many times with my teardrop build. Thanks!

My approach for making marks like this to locate the receivers is to use a smidge of artists' oil paint on the ends (as an artist, I have plenty around). It takes time to cure so you don't have to rush, makes a clear mark without damage, and wipes off most surfaces easily, perhaps with a smidge of solvent on a rag.

I just followed your method and it worked perfectly! Great tip at the end about using tape to make sure everything is lined up right. The only thing I did differently is I used a 7/8" hole saw (didn't have the right size Forstner bit) and it worked on .040 aluminum just fine. I recommend drilling really slowly. Thanks for this video!

Yeah, I noticed you did it: apply some pressure on the hatch to compress the gasket while locating the two locking holes. Then also, chamfering holes in Filon is important to prevent the beginning of tiny cracks that will elongate and widen along the time, we do that when we install screws in fiberglass boat gelcoat surfaces. Again, great informative video!

Thanks Raynald! I took your tip on chamfering those holes... didn't want any cracking later on! :)

Awesome video. I really enjoy watching the progress. A couple of alternate ideas for locating holes. A ball of modeling clay stuck to the inside wall that the rods can press into. Or, a piece of carbon paper taped to the inside wall that the rods can press against. (Carbon paper is still available at some office supply stores). Looking forward to next weeks video!

Thanks Doug!! Carbon paper was my first choice, but I couldn't find my stash! LOL! Great tips you offer, I just happen to luck out using the pencil, wasn't sure it would even work! Thanks for hanging around!

I've used a dot of white-out on the end of the rod to mark the location of the hole. Nail polish works great too.
@thebaldingbuilder84004 жыл бұрын
Very nice. Sorry I'm just now getting to watch. I use the pencil method a lot to mark location. If graphite won't work I use my wife's fingernail polish. Just a fine coat and use the same procedure. I went to a RV museum the other day and thought of you. I took some pics and will send them to you as soon I can figure out how to get them off my new phone. LOL I do plan to continue my camper build but I need to get the new house to a point we can live in it while we work on it first. Who knows we may end up sleeping in the camper if we need to.

I'll look forward to seeing those pics! Get that house finished so you can set up shop! :) Cheers!

Awesome video! I would probably use a *grease pencil* to make that mark for where to drill the hole on the side to receive the end of the rod, however your regular pencil lead method worked very well!

Great tip T455! Didn't think of the grease pencil... that should work as well!

Great job, the only thing I missed was the screw type you used on latch from outside. Is there a screw set inside as well, or can someone screw out the outside screws and break in?
@OregonBatman4 жыл бұрын
The latch was provided with a couple screws to hold the handle in place. Number 10 about 3/4" long. Can't thru-bolt it because of the lock on the inside. With the latch in the closed position, can't access the screws, unless it was a short screwdriver with a 90 degree tip. Typically, you would drill a hole on the handle shaft and use a pin to secure it on the inside (like the rods). BUT... if I ever lost the keys to the latch, I would be the one trying to break in, so I didn't want to pin that shaft! LOL!!

@@OregonBatman ill be sticking around for sure. Im hoping for a variety so myself and others can learn things from you. Im hoping to see recessed floors and stuff others havent done or rarely done but you would be the guy that shows how in detail. I wont be building until fall so im constantly looking for new ideas

What do you call the latch that you use. I’ve been trying to find one. Thanks

Hi Phill! Purchased from Vintage Technologies: Part number:DL17 2 POSITION REAR GALLEY LID LATCH ASSEMBLY 2 Point Latch 1 Rear Deck "T" Handle Keyed 2 36" Rods that can be cut and bent to fit your application 2 Rod Mounting Brackets Price $39.95
@donmoroz55023 жыл бұрын
You could have cut the rods with an angle grinder, treated the ends as you did, and dabbed a litle lipstick on the end of the rods, closed the hatch and turned the handle. Voila, holes markedl
