I don't know much about walpurgesnacht but I can't help but imagine her just telling the town folk what they wanted to hear. " yep I'm just driving out all the witches, don't worry about them anymore, we're all Christians here, just hanging out in the woods with our herbs, nothing to see here, move along."

I am from Germany, living close to the Harz mountains and have been hiking there a couple of times. They still celebrate Walpurgisnacht in a lot of villages there with big fires, music and a witchy theme. It is said that on Walpurgisnacht the witches gather at the Hexentanzplatz, in english witches dance place, in the city of Thale and then fly up to the Brocken mountain. I find this area still mystic and nice for hiking. There even is a hiking trail called “Harzer Hexen Stieg” which has the name witch in it. In this area, the villages spread a medieval vibe with cute timberhouses, for example Quedlinburg and Goslar, both UNESCO heritage sites. So, all in all I can recommend this region. Unfortunately the woods there are dying due to the dryness and the bark beetle.

Sad I missed it live, but good stream! I've been braiding white and red string (and a bell!) for the past few days to tie around the tree by my front door. Using this new moon Beltane to plant my garden after my ceremony with the tree. I plan to leave sparkling wine as an offer and planting a spell under my garden. Will burn some offerings as it gets dark...can't do a bonfire

Yes, there’s some witchy vibe in the Harz. You will find many shops selling witchy stuff and there’s a town called Thale were you will find tourist attractions related to the witches (like the witches dancing floor for Walpurgisnacht) and germanic mythology (there’s a beautiful Wotan statue, for example). Another great place in the Harz is The Devil’s Wall (Teufelsmauer) in a town called Blankenburg. Everything behind the walls belong to the devil. I go all the time to the Harz with my family… coming from the “Ilha da Magia”, the witches island in Brazil, it’s good to live near to the witches mountains.

About fire… we have participated in one Walpurgis celebration where they had a bonfire. But in our village, the fire celebration happened two weeks before the Maibaum. We call it Osterfeuer (Easter Fire).

I've been to the top of the Brocken, it's a nice medium hike. :) But the vibes were constrained by the people I was with, so will have to go back. Touristy witch stuff in the village, didn't have a chance to stop in. Oh and it's pronounced "Harts" in German. Harz. It's not Bavaria, those mountains are much higher. It's Sachsen and Sachsen-Anhalt. (Saxony/Saxon-Anhalt) Closest "big" city is Leipzig. Nice discussion thank you!

I have read and heard that Ostara was first mentioned in a writing by the brothers Grimm in the 1800s, and though Eostre was a goddess, is Ostara a historically celebrated pagan holiday or more of a neo holiday?

someone raised the question if fey are around, what happens if it doesn't get back in time. the fey on Beltane are the trooping faeries. not some lone pixie or misplaced sprite but the great courts of the sidhe relocating for a season. they do not get locked out.

Decades ago I learned a tradition around the May Pole, An equal number of teenage males and females would do the dance, each going in an opposite direction, and the person you ended up facing at the end was your date/mate for the day. Any children resulting from the frolicking would be called Goddard (god's Daughter) or Goddson (God's Son) and the village would raise the child with the biological parents not being held as the true parents but The Lady and her Consort as the true parents.

I like y'all cuz you do some research and make it interesting. You're doing something good by actually teaching people about their own history, which unfortunately prior to current times was lost upon most Christians. Not many of the Christian community understands what has happened here historically. Oh, we have some great IPAs brewed in this area. Go online, cuz they deliver.

So I have a question that’s been irking at me since diving into paganism and it’s culture. I’ve fallen in love with it and feel a real connection to it. Cernunnos, spiritual growth and nature being where I’m most driven too at the moment. But a part of me has worried that because I don’t have pagan ancestors (I’m a non Spanish speaking hispanic military veteran from ny) maybe I won’t be welcome in the culture? I know it’s a silly thing but it’s been a lingering thought of mine and wanted to get your input on that worry. Should I be discouraged from traveling down this pagan path since I don’t fit what some would see as rhe “demographic”

They don't just "hearken back." I literally converted from christianity to paganism because christian holidays have the dates they do IN ORDER to convert pagans. Choosing those dates were acts of cultural genocide on the part of the church and resulted directly in the massive loss of traditions we will never be able to recover as pagans. The church is the reason pagan reconstructionism will never be able to actually achieve the goal of the movement.... And that is just heartbreaking to me. As such... celebrating a holiday of persecution and keeping the name of the celebrated persecutor attached to it seems... odd? ...unless it's like a pissing on her grave kind of thing? not really vibin with that.
