I attended Holy Rosary College Enugu 2007-2013 set. I can attest to the fact that some people who came into HRC learnt igbo while they were in school. I and twin sister hardly speak English in fact any other language aside from igbo no dey gel. My daughter is a year and 3 months old and she fully understands igbo. I don't speak English for her. That she will learn when she starts school. The goal is for her to learn and teach her younger siblings when they come I'm proudly igbo anyday anytime😊 #igboamaka I loveddd this particular video ❤️

Oh how I enjoyed this. Living abroad has made me appreciate my identity even more and like they said, my children will have to learn and speak Igbo. We underestimate the importance of kids been bilingual or multi lingual. If not for anything, it helps with brain development and research has established a link between being bilingual/multilingual and reduced risk of Alzheimer’s. Is Uche on socials, I like her energy. Dimma please you have to make this a series. Something like conversations with Uche or something

I'm Angolan, as someone who was born in a country with several dialects and speaks none of them because colonisation truly stripped us from our roots I cannot express how much I loved this video, listening to fellow Africans speaking in their native language took me back to my childhood and reminded me of when the elderly of both sides visited us... I dunno there's something about the sound of African dialects that makes my heart feel at easy/cosy. Loved, loved this video. Thank you.

Everything Dimma said about history and gender role in Igbo is exactly the paper I am currently writing for a course I am taking in my MSc. Gender role seems to have a lot of import of colonialism and social construct in Africa. Long story jare….

This was so needed! My mother always said she cant marry someone from a diff tribe cause she doesnt want to feel like an outsider. My parents never spoke igbo to me cause they didnt want me to be in ESL(English Second Language). This was the reason for many Nigerians abroad didnt speak igbo to their kids.

Too bad. Studies show children only struggle briefly with learning several languages at once. After a couple of years they speak them all fluently. Grateful to my mom for teaching me Edo our language. Now in Canada. I speak youruba, Edo and English (here in Canada). Sometimes I meet Nigerians who only speak English and some speak Nigerian English and cannot speak any Nigerian language. Now Canadian society laughs at their English, and they have no other language . Learn your language people! It’s not too late.

About the intermarriage, I’m Igbo (Awka,Anambra) and married to a Yoruba man and the communication with my MIL is good. I admit it could be better if I spoke Yoruba fluently with my husband and MIL but 🤷‍♀️ I’d marry a GOOD MAN/FAMILY over HIS TRIBE any day ✌🏼

Igbo kwenu 😍😍🥰🥰 be proud guys we cant embrace the colonists language and not be proud of our Native it means we are nt totally free as Africans we are still in bondage... if u don't know ur culture as an African child u are still lost

I know it took a long time to create this and add the subtitles so THANK YOU! I needed the subtitles for some terms since my own Igbo dialect (abriba) is different from yours. As another Engli-igbo speaker, this was quite enjoyable. I'm off to watch the chigul one too :) I disagree with the traditional marriage opinion as my own experience was not great but I think it has to do with how different Igbo tribes choose to do the traditions. Some people make it very difficult and appear to make up "traditional rules" as they go. Anyhow, I understand what you were saying but I have to disagree lol. I hated my traditional marriage rites experience. It was too stressful for no reason. BUT my other friends from enugu, anambra, Imo state etc they had better traditional marriage experiences. My own case was different which left such a bad taste in my mouth.
