I am more angry with Varg for perpetrating such violence and destruction just because he had something to prove to Euronymous!! He wanted to "one-up" everything and everyone!! Euronymous, sure, was a prick and goat for leading Dead into self-destruction, and Varg into doing more and more to prove his worth!! It was Varg for everything else. and he's still alive, and Euronymous and Dead are not!! This is wrong on so many levels, in my opinion!!

People towards the end were tired of him but we never wanted him dead. He was a controlling freak, he was egotistical. At the start he was worshipped but later everyone knew it was all smoke and no fire. Still people wanted to be accepted and associated to become larger than life in this small country. All i can say is.. don’t believe varg. While he was liked by many he was also a cunning person. The media story was his idea, he would burn churches and do things others wouldn’t because he wanted to make a name for himself and always top the person who took him under his wing and in the end he planned and murdered him while claiming self defence which was a lie. A very small group knew he wanted to kill him and i found out by word of mouth a few weeks before it happened. Varg himself knew he didn’t have the balls to kill him since varg practically had to pressure him in to burning churches by joining him on.. and i quote, “at least one occasion”. I don’t know fully the Norwegian translation but varg was the reason he came along. I myself was never involved and always in the background and i left long ago. I still love black metal but i am no longer associated with it or anyone from it and its purely based on the fact that i wanted a different life. I am not a satanist and i don’t hate society enough to get locked up. I had a child very early and that child became my whole world and now i can say i have successfully raised her right after giving my whole. I could honestly write a whole book, i have many stories and all these memories have recently been bought up because my little girl is now a grown woman, she is married and she is soon to give birth.. this birth of her child has reminded me of my time when my wife was about to give birth. The choices i had to make for the better future of them both. Many will not believe and that is fine but just be be able to write this is therapeutic. It all comes out which i once held all in. Varg is smart but he is not a good person, he is cunning and that i do not like nor trust. I have seen his videos also and i see he has not changed despite the age and children. Still a evil man, narcissist if you will. This has been nice to type. Not to best translation of my experience and not even 10% but it’s been nice. Believer or not i thank you for taking the time to read. Edit: this movie.. its not true depiction. Very dramatic and not very true feeling! I only say because i knew some of them and it just very bad. Also.. hellhammer is a very racist man which the media doesn’t seem to care about. Strange. We all knew him as a hardcore racist. Many were for the fact it was something hardcore but hellhammer was proud and is famous now with no mention of it. He has pins all over jacket, he had swastika flag and poster on his walls and when drinking he randomly mentions this and his hate and superiority of the race. Behind his back many guys called him mongrel because for local he didn’t look very local. We felt he did that all to fit in. One time i said it’s fine to be different, what is more metal. He called me a foreign loving jew. 😊

Tbh, I’ll always have a soft spot for this film as it’s what got me interested in Mayhem (I know I’m late to the party, I grew up a punk rather than a metalhead 🤣). I think it’s a fun film that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Truth be told, the scene of Pelle cutting himself made me pass out COLD the first time I saw it! I felt like the biggest weenie. Edit after finishing the video: you sound exactly like me when I’m talking about Mayhem! Thank you for actually viewing Pelle and Øystein as the CHILDREN they actually were. I mean, neither of their brains ever got to finish developing.
@EveryFairyDies Жыл бұрын
Nice to see punk's not dead 😁 Yeah, that scene broke my heart, I wanted to just reach through the tv and stop him, make it not happen (even though it was Jack Kilmer and not actually Pelle, lol). I think my age helps me see these guys as the kids they were, and gives me that insight. My edgelord stage wasn't as bad as theirs, but I did have one, and I cringe looking back a little, but I realise that it was part of my development into adulthood. I think a lot of Mayhem fans are either still young, or don't really look at their history from that perspective (some of them are still edgelords, just old ones with mortgages and kids 😆). Thanks for watching!

What. I agree with you but they did not die at 16 or even 19. A 25yo (Euronymous) is not a child by any stretch. 22 yo (Per) is when ppl graduate from college, so *maybe* still "young adult"/late youth. But never would I call anyone in their 20s "children". Unless you just mean they were children when they created the band and the long term issues leading up to the end.

Once you know the history, read the Zines, read the letters, interviews etc. it's hard not to feel like something is missing in this movie. All the stories and quirks, the personalities, it seems shallow once you've researched for a long time. But there's only so much one can squeeze into a one-two hour movie. I really really missed the tour tho, I feel like that was such an important part of Mayhems history..
@EveryFairyDies Жыл бұрын

As regards the "made-up girlfriend" in the movie, Ann-Marit: I think that her character is based on an existing then-young Swedish woman, Ilsa Raluce Anghel, who was in fact somewhat related to both Varg and Euro accoding to the sources I have come across. Ilsa is mentioned in the book Black Metal - Evolution Of The Cult. Apparently, Euro was in close contact with her during the final weeks of his life, confiding to her his troubles having to do with his soon-to-be murderer. The said Ilsa reportedly even consulted a famous Swedish phychic who in turn more or less predicted the murder. To me Ann-Marit in the movie has always been Ilsa (whose name I first came across in an 1995 article on the bm-related events in Norway).

great documentary and breakdown. i think i've watched the movie 3 times since the release. i wasn't aware Jonas wanted to make this into a series. A series (even if only 6-8 one hour long episodes) would have given Jonas much more underlying story content and characters to delve into. A 90-minute film has to rush through much of the story that took years to unfold in real life. It would have been nice to see Varg's character before he created Burzum, when he jammed with the Immortal guys in Old Funeral, as well as the relationships and early stories of other Norwegian bands and members that were sprouting up at the time like Darkthrone, Emperor, etc. I've been into blackmetal since that time period when they all started showing up in zines and tape trading was still commonplace. Mayhem was one that I never got a response back from, probably because they were getting A LOT more letters and postal packages than what is depicted in the movie. I still have all my letters and tapes from those days, as well as the Scandanavian zines I would buy through mailorder. At some point I plan to make a display case (shrine) in my studio with all that stuff. It was an exciting time in metal music history, for sure.
@EveryFairyDies Жыл бұрын
That's so cool! You gotta send me photos of your shrine one day, that would be epic to see. A series is always better; more streaming platform should take advantage of people's desire for more information into the lives of these famous people and events. Like "The Crown" but for music icons (and more accurate). They're really missing a great opportunity here, as they could explore the history of bands/musicians that had such a massive impact on music evolution, not just metal. Maybe I should go poke them with a stick and suggest it. 😂

Finally a video that isn’t shit talking Lords of Chaos! I like Lords of Chaos, when I first watched it I had no idea what it was about, I had never heard of Mayhem, I just watched it because I’m a big fan of Rory Culkin and I wanted to see what it was about, if you ignore all of the historical inaccuracies, it’s a really good movie (not amazing by all means but in Biopic Standards it’s pretty good) you got a great cast (I never thought i would see a movie with Rory Culkin, Wilson Gonzales Ochsenknecht, Valter Skargsgård, and Jon Øigarden in the same movie and yet here we are!) great acting moments even with some cringey moments there’s still some good acting moments, it’s just overall a great movie even with all its faults. After I watched Lords of Chaos, I actually listened to some of Mayhem’s music just to see if it’s something I would be interested in and while Black Metal isn’t my kind of music (I’m more of a alternative Rock, post hardcore, pop punk Emo kind of person) I’m glad i got to experience and find out about a new genre of music! So Lords of Chaos, great movie if you want something that won’t take itself seriously, it’s a fun movie, that’s it.

I suspect a lot of the hate it gets are from poser edge lords who are determined to hate anything that doesn't conform to their idea of what they think happened. But I agree, it's not the greatest movie, but it's not as bad as everyone claims, and is certainly more accurate than it gets credit for.

Great vid! Thanks for including my comment about how there wasn’t enough snow 😆 👍🏻 My only corrections: 5:41 you mention that vocal duties on Deathcrush were shared between Necrobutcher Euronymous, Manheim, Maniac and Messiah. However, the pictures you show are of Necrobutcher, Euronymous, Maniac, Maniac, and Maniac. Also, Necrobutcher and Euronymous did vocals on the Pure Fucking Armageddon demo, but the vocals on Deathcrush, were done by Maniac and Messiah. (AFAIK Manheim has never recorded vocals.) Mayhem had also had a couple of other vocalists by then. Their very first was a guy named Nils Svensson, and very briefly, Torben Grue from the band Vomit. It is a a bit of a letdown that there was no mention of the prior vocalists (Maniac is an especially interesting guy who influenced Euronymous a lot, just like Pelle). It’s also a letdown thy Manheim literally disappears and is never seen again-in real life he actually stayed friends with Euronymous up until euro’s demise. A fun scene would’ve been him coming into Helvete after having gotten a stuffy office job.) You also mention that Blackthorn was recruited after Euronymous‘s death, but according to the LOC book, he had already joined the band as a second guitarist, then quit at some point because of the toxicity and drama in the band, and was considered by Necrobutcher and Hellhammer as a replacement guitarist before they knew about his role in the murder. You also mentioned that he has never spoken of the murder, but he did actually give two interviews about it that are available in the LOC book. Personally, I think title cards explaining what happened to all of the characters (and mentioning the release of the De Mysteriis album with Varg’s and Euronymous’s parts together) would have given the movie an air of authenticity that it somewhat lacked, but to each their own. Great job though!

great video, really underrated channel, i think lords of chaos actually is a lot better and accurate than people say, the subtle details that are actually real, like the t shirts they wore in the same instances as in the actual mayhem photos, even Atilla's son is in a scene, so it wasn't disconnected from actual black metal some black metal bands supported the film too, like watain, in fact the film was being guided by and eastern European black metal band that helped with the style and scenes. the film was atmospheric for me, i really liked it, rory culkin was a great fit for the character of euronymous, and its not as bad as people say, it could have definitely been worse, it could have been directed by someone who had no clue about black metal. edit: watched the whole video now, you summed up everything i was saying, even better, absolutely agree

The movie has a lot of good things about it. As a black metal fan, I can see why some changes were made for simplicity. As a film fan, when forcing myself to look into the merits it has, pretending I know nothing about the source material, it is pretty damn good. A lot of the true characters didn't want to contribute to the project, making the finished project an amazing testament in spite of it all. I showed it to my girlfriend who can't even pronounce Marduk and knows nothing of the accounts described and she thought it was a fascinating film which is what Jonas intended I'm sure. I must say, there are things this movie did very well, and things I wish could’ve been done better. I’m 50/50 on it. Personally I didn’t think the actor who portrayed Varg as creepily and sadistic as i would’ve preferred, but it is what it is. I can’t help but think if this were a TV series we could’ve gotten more story out of this whole thing too.
@EveryFairyDies Жыл бұрын
I agree, a tv series would have been a great way to present this story, and the director did initially want to do a series so he could also get more into the 'side-characters' that made up the Black Circle, but unfortunately, not enough people would likely be interested.
@Arak_Drakoniz8 күн бұрын
The historical (in)accuracies not withstanding, this movie was fucking genius. But as brilliant as this movie was, it’s a bleeding shame that this was black metal’s destiny; a joke in musical history and a stain on a country’s history… even if Abrahamic religions are a stain on the world. This movie was basically Jonas Akerlund (an *actual* OG in black metal) telling every band, “I don’t care how edgy and underground you are, I hope y’all enjoy this movie because it’s the last bit of decent coverage your precious little genre is ever going to get.” lol It’s very hit or miss hit but I love black metal. While it’s not saying much, I think black metal had more creative ideas than death metal… hell, I’ll die on that hill. Why not? When black metal hits, it’s fucking cool. This movie was not hit or miss; it absolutely nailed how absurd it is (albeit banal) that elitists and gatekeepers even exist in the genre. It was basically saying “You’re not unique, edgy or special for being into black metal. Grow up.” Jonas did and he’s doing just fine.
@EveryFairyDies7 күн бұрын
Absolutely! I agree with everything you've said. I think after a lifetime amongst the black metal crowd, Akerlund was a little sick of the edge lords and their holier than thou attitude, who point to these guys as gods and visionaries, and he wanted to say "they weren't special or brilliant or amazing, they were just kids caught up in hype, trying to outdo one another and it lead them down some really stupid paths." While black metal will never be my genre of choice, I appreciate what they were trying to do, how they were basically trying to see how far they could take metal, make it ugly and dark but also still music and meaningful. Because darkness is as much a part of life as lightness, and it's important we acknowledge that. Maybe if more people had been willing to admit and accept that we all have darkness inside us, Pelle might've lived longer (I'm not saying the people around him didn't care, just that they were taught to repress those kind of thoughts and feelings and so didn't really know how to reach out and help him).

i first heard about this movie via various youtubers just tearing the whole movie apart but when i watched it i found that i kind of liked it. I admit I'm not really into black or death metal but i'm happy to find that I'm not the only one to find this film entertaining, its not the best movie ever made but i dont think it deserves the level of hate it gets. Also the accents I lived in Sweden for several years when i was a teen and seriously drive two villiages away and you find a completly diffrent accent and slang, there is no such thing as a Swedish or Norwegian accent, there are hundreds of accents (if not more) for each Scandinavian country

They could've gotten away with the inaccuracies so much better if they hadn't demonstrated so much competence with the visuals and making sure everything was realistic enough to make it seem like they were trying so hard to be 'true' to life. Would've been a great spoof comedy. But it ended up being insidious cringe. And that is the most impressive thing. This movie resides in a category I like to call “the lie that tells the greater truth”. A lot of the details are probably goofy…Varg going on fucking sprees, timelines and things of that nature. But at the end of the day, what was Mayhem? A band of awkward, socially weird kids who stumbled into enough controversy to gain international attention. Let’s just call it like it is. I think that Dead and Euronymous were probably *a lot* less mysterious than black metal fans would have you believe. Varg has proven himself to be an ultra right wing maniac who isn’t above murder. Churches were burned, regardless of who was responsible. People were killed…and the most mediocre metal genre in history (sorry…) was born as a result. I like Burzum, I like certain, early Mayhem cuts and some stuff from the various “one man bands” that have popped up…but let’s not pretend that these kids invented the wheel. They played trem licks, minor chords and disturbing intervals with famously bad production.
