Mayhem is a story of corruption. Euronymous wanted to create something special, something that he wanted to keep underground, and feared. He tore apart the very thing he tried so hard to create. He pushed his friends into doing things that would end up destroying him. This is not a story of comedy, this not a story about love, this isn't a story with a happy ending. It's a story of young kids killing themselves, killing others, and committing acts of arson. It's a tragedy. It should be treated as such.

@@Bobby14Yeah but that's only if you are on the younger side and don't necessarily know what it was like before we had everything at our fingertips. Back in the day you had to know by reputation alone, but as of now it would turn out that I had played my own little role in the history of black metal. I knew the very first black metal band to actually be in a major Hollywood production and there was one independent movie before that, done by a director that happened to also be involved in the movie that I am talking about. It was the first major Hollywood movie that was a "true crime" drama called Bully, who's lead actor Brad Renfro ended up dying young by tragic circumstances himself. I also knew the logo artist that actually did the logo for this movie, who is the same guy that famously did both Emperor and Mayhem's logo. Had I not lost touch with him a year or so before this came out I might have been involved in the process. He does reach out to other artists for help on occasion. I have been mentioned in an article or two of his going by the same screen name that I still use now. It's kinda cool knowing that I helped shape the genre we know today in some small ways. The logo I use btw was done by us both, you have to click on my name to see it though.

As a big fan of black metal, and understanding the falsehoods of the book the movies based on and the falsehoods of the movie itself, it was largely an entertaining film. If I was watching a documentary, maybe then I’d be salty about the inaccuracies. Only thing I hated was the lack of Dead, like you said, gone in less than 30 minutes is a pretty sorry state.

I think what a lot of the musicians portrayed actually didn't like was that this movie humanized them and demystified a lot of these events, going against the "evil" image they crafted over the years. This movie is most likely not very accurate, but it portrays them as they probably were back then: a bunch of stupid teenagers and early 20-somethings doing very stupid things and taking themselves way too seriously.
@1989eol

It's so real in that sense. I mean, nobody can look behind peoples faces and appearances, especially in the past. But I have seen enough of the scene in my time to say that the vibe of the film really comes close to reality. That is probably the films biggest achievement. Sometimes tragic events happen because you slip on the stairs, and sometimes there is just a cocktail of youthful inexperience, lack of guidance and overblown self-aggrandizement.

Except they weren't. Most of the events presented in the movie took place when the people involved were 21+ years old. Euronymous was 25 when Varg killed him, who was 22 at the time. None of the actors look old enough. And that probably was a deliberate choice by Akerlund. I think this is grossly misleading. Makes the audience think that the beginnings of Black Metal were just a bunch of teenagers doing stupid shit. As far as I'm concerned this is a very lazy approach on the matter. Implying that it was all just teenage bullshit. I started listening to BM in the 90s. I know for a fact it was more than teenage bullshit. It was an appreciation of the extreme, the "freakish", true human nature. Something no scene provides nowadays.

The one film that represented music history right, and also could get away with totally made up happenings was Almost Famous. Putting a fictional band in the scene with real contemporary bands from that era was a brilliant move. Stillwater was neither Led Zeppelin, The Eagles or any other band, but at the same time they were a little bit of a lot of different bands. Honestly all the women in the story had no purpose other than appeal to the male gaze or be treated badly to show how much of an asshole Varg and the others are. 🤷‍♀ (With the exception of Euro's little sister who's only there to establish his humanity.) The part where Varg forced the girl to remove her top was completely unnecessary, and kinda sleazy on the writers' or director's part, given the fact that this never happened and was thrown in for plot. The white supremacy, church burnings, murder, and pushing Dead to kill himself already did a good job establishing the characters' depravity because all that is true.

A lot of biopics add wifes/girlfriends for the main male characters. Most of the time there is an unnecessary sex scene because "Sex sells". Also I think they add them to somehow turn everything bad about the main men towards them, blame the women for it and at the end make the girls fix the boys (because, of course, it's a woman's duty to "fix" the man). Trust me, I watched "Bohemian Rapsody" (the Queen biopic) and Freddie's girlfriend, Mary, convinces him to turn back to his band boys, thus making her the ultimate heroine of the story.

My take is it used a story to get across a message about Edginess and how getting into an edgelord pissing contest can go bad, more than a biopic about a band. As a film, divorced from the source material, it's better than it has any right to be, but as a film about Mayhem or Black metal as a whole, well you summed it up nicely, depends on what you think of those things how you will see it.

I don’t think that’s generally explained often enough and making the comparison with The Doors and other movies on the semi-documentary style really helps! I was going over in my mind how much I took Sid & Nancy to be true: not much. But the excitement of how the story comes out on screen can help to lead a person into further study of the events. There are times we’re disappointed to have been misled, but other times it’s a good influence to look into the reasons behind that and get as much of the “true” story as possible.

@@Shamash9898 Varg didn't like the way anything in the movie was portrayed. He actually defended the memory of Euronymous, saying that the portrayal of him as a wimpy, innocent, and naive boy that cowardly begged for his life is slander; that he was actually a twisted, perverted, nefarious egomaniac that fought to the death. To be fair, most of the people that were a part of that scene back in the early 90's think the same thing... he even said that in this video. As a matter off a fact, Necrobutcher did an interview about 2 weeks ago saying that he was actually preparing to go and kill Euronymous himself when he got the news he had already been killed.

i was SUPER skeptical of LoC after hearing all the diff reaction. i finally watched it this week. And it is actually a very good film; tightly directed, very nice cinematography and (OH MY GOD!)...humor. It's also a pretty nice depiction of young, artists on the verge of creating some pretty timeless art. It captures metal heads of the era (yeah I was there - not Norway but deep into underground metal) really well. It dares to show these young guys in everyday moments, not being "metal" or "evil". I suggest watching it as film MOSTLY based on what went down sometimes in great detail. Obviously it takes liberties here n there - its a movie after all - but I didnt feel this detracted from what is really enjoyable film. The violence is quite brutal which I was not expecting. That was pretty tough to watch ...(sorry, 'stabbing' and 'cutting' really freaks me out) and that's my only real complaint!

I’ve seen this movie 4+ times and I’ve become more and more appreciative of it. So people don’t like it because it’s inaccurate? What biopic is 100% accurate? There are changes to the story for dramatic effects. Also, it doesn’t matter if this movie followed the book, Until the Light Takes Us, Once Upon a Time in Norway, ect., no one will ever know what actually happened between Varg and Euronymous because no one else was there and Varg isn’t known to tell the truth. This movie really wasn’t bad because it’s actually quite an accurate depiction of what the metal scene is like and uses bits and pieces of a true story to show that.

I read Lords of Chaos several times when I was younger (bought it in 98) - I’m not going to lie, it was very instrumental in getting me into Black Metal, mainly by mapping out which early BM bands to seek out. As I learned more about BM I realized how bad the book was; I got rid of it but being honest, I’ll admit how important it was to me as far as discovering BM. The movie makes the book seem like real history.

"looks like a parody"... well, it's because Black Metal WAS ALWAYS a parody! Over the years the stories have become legends and the people involved have become characters of an epic tale, but really they were a bunch of teens trying so hard to be edgy that they ended up burning churches and killing people. Nothing against the music, but we're not talking about nobel prizes here, they happened to be in the right place at the right time, but the people who celebrate them as rebels or talented musicians miss the point. Again, no offense to any Black Metal fans, not trying to shit on the genre, just the attitude.

Honestly, "The Doors" movie got me into the Doors music. I was 9, I'm now 38 and still love the Doors. I've been a Mayhem fan for almost 12 years now. When I heard about the "Lords of Chaos" film, I was skeptical. I really enjoyed it though. It had a high and low, kind of roller coaster vibe to it. I've actually read Varg's portrayal of the murder of Euronymous. That was an intense moment in my life. I can still see the orange/yellow background on Varg's website...

This was a super weird movie. It felt like they tried to tone it down enough to be palatable for mainstream audiences while at the same time trying to keep it dark enough to be palatable to black metal fans. In the end they made something that was really weak, although it still has some awesomely gory and disturbing scenes. But I guess it's pretty good publicity for black metal and Mayhem in particular.
@TwoToeTags
@TwoToeTags 4 жыл бұрын
I recently watched this film and enjoyed it quite a lot. I understand that there are embellishments but the overall story and key plot points are accurate and that is what matters. The story of Mayhem is as interesting as it gets when it comes to bands and I'm okay with some inaccuracies as a trade off for entertainment. There is a portion of the metal community who have an elitist or purist type of view of what metal is and what metal related content should be but I whole heartedly disagree with their sentiments. This movie was made to appeal to a wider audience than just black metal fans and the elitists don't understand that concept. There are already several documentaries and books with accurate representations that they can enjoy. Lords of Chaos is for people who are interested in the story but don't really care about hardcore specifics and grueling details.

I'm not a metal fan at all, personally, I'm just familiar with the story and find it interesting, because it was the one time when all the mainstream hysteria about a subculture actually had some legitimate basis. The old folks have always said rock n roll was satanic and violent, but the Scandinavian black metal scene genuinely validated that point of view. While parents were over here in the US wringing their hands over Marilyn Manson for no good reason, Norwegian rock stars were on a wave of terrorism and menace. It is rather fascinating. So my primary interest is whether or not this is a good film simply on it's own merits without consideration to how fair it is to key players in the real life events. At the same time I can understand how that would be enraging or hurtful if these events are in fact personal to you, and I would hope that some care would be taken not to exploit the stories of the victims, particularly Dead who was obviously mentally ill.
