Mappy (マッピー Mappī?) is a 1983 arcade game by Midway Games (until Namco Classic Collection vol.1 is released, it was made by Namco). In the United States, it was manufactured and distributed by Bally/Midway. Mappy is a side-scrolling platformer that features cartoon-like characters, primarily cats and mice. The game's main character itself is a mouse. Mappy runs on Namco Super Pac-Man hardware, modified to support horizontal scrolling. The name "Mappy" is likely derived from mappo, a Japanese slang term (slightly insulting) for a policeman.
Gameplay
The player guides Mappy the police mouse through the mansion of the cats called Mewkies (Meowky in the U.S. version) to retrieve stolen goods. The player uses a left-right joystick to move Mappy and a single button to operate doors. The mansion has six floors of hallways in which the stolen items are stashed. The items are:
Radio (100 points)
Television (200 points)
Computer (300 points)
Mona Lisa (400 points)
Safe (500 points)
The items come in pairs; should Mappy get paired items one after another, the point values of the second matching item gets a multiplier. The more the player retrieves matching items without dying, the bigger the multiplier gets. Therefore, ideally a player will start with the lowest value item (100 + 100 × 2) and proceed to the highest value items (500 + 500 × 6) in order to get the highest value items with the biggest multiplier, for a total of 8500pts. The second item of a pair will blink if retrieving it will yield a multiplier.
Mappy and the cats move between the floors by bouncing on trampolines at various places in the house. Both Mappy and the cats can only land on a floor on the way up, but not on the way down. When they pass in the air, Mappy is unharmed by the cats, but should Mappy run into a cat anywhere else, he will lose a life.
The trampolines will break if Mappy bounces on them four times in a row. The trampolines change color depending on how many times Mappy has used them without a rest: green (zero bounces), blue (one bounce), yellow (two bounces), red (three bounces). A red trampoline will break if Mappy attempts it again. If a trampoline breaks and there is another trampoline below, Mappy will live. If there is either nothing or a floor under the broken trampoline, Mappy will lose a life. To reset a trampoline, Mappy must touch a floor. Bouncing on a trampoline is worth 10pts.
In addition to Meowkies, the boss cat Nyamco also roams around. The name "Nyamco", besides being a play on "Namco", comes from nyanko, the Japanese equivalent of "kitty cat". Nyamco was renamed "Goro" in the U.S. release. He is faster, but less aggressive than the Mewkies. Throughout the levels, Nyamco hides behind the different objects to recover. Should Mappy recover an item which Nyamco is hiding behind, the player gets a bonus of 1000 points for having caught Nyamco in the act. He only hides behind an object for three seconds, though. Nyamco is always a single cat in each level, but the Meowkies appear three to a group for the first set of levels before the first bonus stage, four to a group for the next set of levels in between bonus levels, five to a group for the next set of levels, and so on.
Many of the hallways have doors which Mappy can slam open or shut to temporarily knock out the Mewkies or Nyamco. Some of these are special "microwave doors" which release a wave which sweeps away any cat in its path off the edge of the screen and out of the house. The first two Mewkies are each worth 200 points, and each additional Mewky beyond the second is worth 400 points; Nyamco counts as a Mewky plus a multiplier of two. Any cat that is swept away reappears after a short while, jumping from the top center opening in the roof.
A level is completed when all the loot is retrieved. If Mappy tarries too long, a "Hurry" sign appears after which the music and the cats speed up, and more Mewkies are added (two will appear ready to drop as the Mewkies normally do immediately following the hurry message, and more Mewkies can arrive later on). If the player waits too long after this, the "Gosenzo" coin (a blue disk shape with Nyamco's face on it) will drop onto the top-middle platform and chase Mappy in a manner similar to the Mewkies, but more effectively. The "Gosenzo" coin can harm Mappy even if he is in the air.

Mappy needs more love in general. This is a really amazing game. The fact this game is not as popular as other Arcade games like Dig Dug, Pacman, and Galaga boggles my mind, even to this day. Heck, in the Namco Museum compilations, I spend more time playing Mappy much, much more than playing Pac-Man because I find Mappy more fun and enjoyable.

I played the Famicom (NES) version in my childhood (through a Famiclone), it was one of my favorite games, there's a lot of strategy in this game, once you know how the springs and the cats works. Now, seeing all this version, the Famicom version seens to be the most accurate version to the original Arcade version, i can't say if the Playstation version is an actual remake for the system, or just a emulator running the arcade version.

I love Mappy! :) It's my favorite arcade game of all time! Out of all the versions of Mappy is shown in this video, the only versions of Mappy I played are the original Arcade version, Famicom/NES version, and Game Gear version. My favorite version of Mappy is no doubt the original Arcade version(Arcade version usually is the best version in these kinds of games), and my second favorite version is the Famicom version. I like the Game Gear version of Mappy, it's still really fun, however, what bothers me about that version is the screen crunch and the weird AI of the Meowky gang in that port, but I still have a really good time with it(What's sweet, is it gives new really good levels). Great video. I would've love to see what an Atari 2600 version of Mappy could've look like, but it doesn't exist unfortunately :(

I think it's mainly the video quality's fault or emulation issues. When you play the actual GBA cartridge of Mappy, it looks and sound better than in this video. The GBA version of Mappy is basically a Famicom version ported to the GBA as part as a Famicom mini series. There was a time when NES games are ported to the GBA, and Mappy is one of those games that's picked to port over to GBA(The NES/Famicom version of course) as the Famicom mini series. It's only released in Japan though. I heard they port NES/Famicom games to the GBA to celebrate NES/Famicom's anniversary at the time.

I know it wasnt on here, but I played the arcade version, and the version on the Ms. Pac Man Plug and play thing. between those two, I like the Plug and mPlay version better, if only for the sound being revamped. For example in the arcade, the long sustained notes are just very short ones. It makes it seem like that was only that way because of hardware limitations (and i dont know if thats the case, so please correct me). In the plug and play version, this is changed to one long note. I think it sounds much better than what any other version has in terms of sound.

God I love this game. Only have it on Namco Museum DS, and i lost that game so I can't play it unless I go to the arcade (which is a little ways away). Highest level I've gotten is 12, but I can only get up to 8 at the arcade lol. I kind of want to learn the song on piano because of how good the tune is. At this point, I'm pretty sure my sister is annoyed with me whistling it all the time. But it really is a great song. This has been my favorite arcade game for a good couple years now (next to Dig Dug). It's cool to see it's been ported to other systems in its life.

wait if you're still here I saw "Mappī?" in the description and ... uh, katakana is used for foreign names and loanwords, and for some reason video game characters often have "foreign" names (マリオ Mario, ガノンドロフ Ganondorofu -> Ganondorf), so マッピー (Mappi, but pronounced like Italian and the "i" is long) is probably best translated as Mappy, even in a literal sense (or at least you can get rid of the question mark lol).

First of all let me say that I love all of your "Let's Compare" videos. I've always been obsessed with the different ports of games I like and how unique a lot of them are to their specific platform. I especially favor this one on account that you included some really obscure ports like the FM7, NEC 8801 and the various Sharp computers. I love how, on the Sharp X68000 version the computer was remade from the TRS-80 looking computer icon to Sharp's Duel Tower design.

Monkeymanlol Official, Good Job with those ratings, except you misspelled "similar" as similarr, and "things" as tings. the Game Boy Advance version had a widescreen view that all the sprites had to be sized down. also, the Game Boy Advance does not have high quality audio, so the music is worse as well. And the NES version was only released for the Famicom (Japanese version of NES) Namco Museum (PSX):Very Close to the Arcade version it was emulated! 10/10 Sharp 68000: Looks 16-Bit, It deserves an 8/10. Also, This shares similar features with the Sharp MZ-2500 and PC-88 ports such as 16-Bit like graphics.

I remember playing this a lot when I was 12, I'm only 19 but I prefer this kind of games over today's edgy stuff since I was a kid while every other 12 year old was obsessed with COD and other peew-peew games.Mappy was was one of my fav games at the time, I just wish the NES version was on the Virtual Console, because the arcade version doesn't screen really well on TVs, its format was ok on an arcade machine but just doesn't work for TVs, and it's not the game's fault, of course it wasn't meant to be played on TV, if someone could make a screen extended hack of the arcade version it would be great in my opinion.

The Sharp X 68000 had a YAMAHA sound chip, that's why the game's music sounds like it came from the Sega Genesis.

Thank you very much for the praise ! lol I appreciate it. a majority of the time People only point out My mistakes but seem to overlook the time it takes to make the video & fail to understand that sometimes mistakes slip through the cracks. The gameboy version is for regular gameboy but is enhanced for the super gameboy for the SNES. This might be why You can't find it. I tagged it as GBC because of it's enhancement for Super Gameboy for the SNES. Hope that answers Your question. :)

Items are on the board in pairs. Once you pick up the first of an item, picking up the second immediately afterwards nets you more points. If you just randomly run around picking up stuff, you won't get as high a score.

Wingnut, your videos are awesome, thank you for uploading all these platform versions, I'm a big retro-gamer (can't get enough of Pac-Man for the Atari 2600, yeah, you heard it right, oh, and I LOVE E.T. too, that's how much of a gamer I am!), keep up the good work. Oh, by the way, is the Game Boy Color version of Mappy (8:25) part of a collection or something? I can't seem to find info about that version, I could only find info about the GBA one but not about the GBC. Thanks in advance.
