​@@userJohnSmith True, household electricity is 60hz alternating current, but there is still a polarity, sort of. Typical household electricity in North America (not sure about elsewhere) is a "split single phase". There are actually three lines that enter the house, two hot and a neutral (Four if you count the ground, but sometimes the ground is to a metal post buried near the foundation and not always with the lines on the grid.) The voltage between both hot lines, which are out of phase opposite to each other, adds up to about 230 volts. The neutral usually doesn't have any current running through it unless it is completing the circuit with the grid. Between any one hot and either neutral is half that at about 115 volts, which is the voltage in a typical wall outlet or light socket. One of the contacts is a hot and one is the neutral and the openings to these contacts differ slightly in size, with the slightly larger one on the left being the neutral, the slightly smaller one on the right being the hot, and the hemispherical one on the bottom being the ground (not every appliance has a ground connection). Despite alternating, the power is essentially supplied through the hot and leaves through the neutral, usually it doesn't matter but for some appliances or switch types it does. Polarised plugs have prongs of differing sizes to prevent incorrect insertion as a safety measure, and so the appliance doesn't malfunction if it is sensitive to incorrect polarity. So, yes you can have erroneous polarity in an alternating current system if it is split phase, which house wiring is.

@@AAA-de6gt The wires could have been installed incorrectly in the first place, or put back incorrectly after replacing a switch or receptacle. Not everything is sensitive to reversed polarities so it would't necessarily cause a full time problem that would be noticed immediately.

On the thing about Scifi leaning more towards dystopias, I saw an interview with George R.R. Martin where he said that he believed the reason for this development is the fact that people today generally have less faith in, and hope for, the future than they did previously, which I think makes a lot of sense.

Humans generally focus on the negative. It's why, although violent crime rates are way down, reporting of these events are way up. Also I think because of that innate bias, authors are preferring to write warnings about what they see as possible than to be optimistic. Optimism may also lead to less fear over the negative consequences of too much progress, which some authors may fear create complacency to the possible darker trends. Because humans, as a whole, dwell on the negative, it probably sells better as well. Hot Take: A lot of middle-grade fantasy is really underrated. I naturally love Sanderson, Tolkien, Jordan, etc, for epic fantasies and sweeping worlds. But sometimes a lot of modern fantasy just seems dark and sad. I've found that some middle-grade fantasy series are written on a fairly high level, and are targeted at an audience that isn't old enough yet to want gritty, dark sorts of stories. I'm not saying that these middle-grade fantasies are great, or better written, but sometimes they're really enjoyable as a change of pace from epic fantasy. Does anyone else have that perspective? And yes, definitely more let's debate videos!

“The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet” by Becky Chambers is one of the best modern examples of a whimsical, character-driven, diverse sci fi novel. It also gives rich details about alien cultures!

Superhero science fiction is different from actual science fiction, in that it doesn't need to be science. Just fiction. Its why Iron Man can have all those ridiculous armors, why radiation turns Bruce Banner into Hulk rather than into a corpse and why no one can recreate a serum that would very likely be easy to recreate if you have a sample of the person that it was used on.

I would recommend Pandora's Star by Peter F. Hamilton. Its an interesting take on future society that is essentially a murder mystery turned Galactic mystery that begins with Mans first Mars Landing. The Astronaut, contemplating the momentous words for the event, steps out of the module only to be greeted by a geek standing next to a hole in the air saying "Sorry, Bud. You are 5 minutes late."

*SIMPLE TAKE:* It would be nice to see more positives outlook/approach towards the sci-fi genre such as Solarpunk, where humankind, fauna and nature learns to co-exist with one another. Or even different sub-genres such as Steampunk, or Teslapunk.

The problem isn't the harmony between man and nature, the problem is that the definition of harmony is fundamentally a HUMAN idea. You can say the Hive city/planet in 40k is extreme human-centric "harmony", 'cause other things are all dead. The interesting part of conflict between species is that how to push the boundary of definition itself. If you already have a set definition, then it will be boring and you will know the ending without reading the book. Then that just not gonna be the center gimmick/selling-point.

There is no peace in Nature. Everything is desperately trying to dominate and/or outcompete one-another. The problem is Humans now and for the first time are actually able to dominate other species, while still depending on them. So if we keep using the old natural instincts we will cripple our own eco-system (also a completely natural phenomenon that happens often, with the completely normal outcome of the species going extinct) and that's not really the outcome we want. So we need to be mindful of our actions more than ever before. In some regards Sci-fi is really good to show this, as the eco-systems on the ships/colonies will be more fragile and require more care. There was a moment in Caliban's War, where an imbalance of a few microorganisms and the neglect of the scientists (due to violent riots) caused the life-support system entering a cascading failure. The good side of all this is that if we live long enough, we'll start seeing the eco-system as something to protect and cherish, not simply exploit and take for granted.

Isn't Solarpunk still just a proposed subgenre rather than a real literary movement? And I don't mean just coming up with loose examples from other genres that might also fit into its criteria, but deliberate attempts to actually produce works within its framework.

Mary Shelly probably wasn’t entirely sure what she was creating with Frankenstein, yet here she is, one of the mothers of Sci-fi as we know it. Or if a genre even needs a literary source to be conceived. Having thought about it, Nintendo seems to hit on the whole Solarpunk idea alot-whether incidentally or not. Pikmin, Mario Sunshine, Splatoon-to name a couple more besides Pokemon. Neo-Cab probably fits as well in terms of world, with a bit more emphasis on punk.

@Nicholas Art I know what you mean, but has anyone looked at Pokemon and gone "I want to focus on the green energy aspect of the setting," and created inspired works that could be called 'Solarpunk' or did they focus more on little kids fighting with fanciful monster-pets? There in lies the difference. Solarpunk has, to my knowledge, been entirely comprised of a manifesto and some artwork. This could be considered an art genre, but you can't collect a bunch of themes and motifs, then declare a literary movement without any literature. And what's been offered as examples is merely inspiration material and not actual examples of the proposed genre. Also we truly need to stop labeling everything with a -punk. Most Punk Punks are either just aesthetics or cyberpunk in a different form and/or era. It doesn't elevate a work by slapping punk onto the end. The only reason we even call Victorian steam powered stuff 'Steampunk' is because of a joke.

Get it while it it Hot Hot Hot!!! Hot Take: People are tired of Marvel. There are still and always will be Marvel-fans, but the draw to general audiences is spent, and they are ready for something new. Hot Take Pt2: Streaming studios, rather than try for broad popularity by aiming the 'general audiences', studios are taking a more diversified approach; by producing a variety of content that will appeal to a variety of niche groups. In an effort to try and gather a 'cult following' behind each of these properties. Hot Take Pt3 (As a product of both the above Hot-Takes...): WandaVision is going to be one of these 'cult classics'. Very popular with the audience it is aimed at, but lacking in wide appeal.

I like these vids. My only criticism is half the questions were typical cliched and contrarian stuff that more or less gets brought up in everyone of these videos (it's too dark, shallow characters, Hollywood sucks, etc). You address them very well, but I hope to see some more variety like the smart phone, non-humanoid aliens, empathy through tech, and so forth.

I would really like to have just once following happen (or would like to know wether or not it happened and where): Technology through magic that comes from technology, but it is magic since people have forgotten about it for one reason or another. Alias something like for example an internet 2.0 made out of magic but it is actually just super advanced technology at play there unbeknownst to most and that part plays a huge part in the lore of the world and its story.

My peeve about scifi is just how small planets become. Like, I get why in the scope of a galaxy, a world can seem tiny, but look at how big and diverse Earth is. Like theres a joke that Dagobah is not one giant swamp, and was actually a nice place, just Yoda was chilling in this swamp on Dagobah.

In the past (ie when I was in college in the 2000s) I've seen critics and academics describe something like Star Wars (ie sci-fi world but focused on adventure with some potential for magic) as "space opera." Do you think that term has fallen out of favor? To me "sci-fantasy" is more like when you have a fantasy world but there maybe leftover technology from an advanced civilization, and some of the "magic" maybe be scientific in origin. There are many pulp stories like this that inspired Gary Gygax in making D&D. More recent examples might be Book of the New Sun and Broken Earth.

Space opera and sci- fantasy are different sub genres. Space opera has to do with the galactic scale of the conflict and a war. Sci- fantasy has to do with does the universe have magic or not. Originally this didn't included psychic powers because John W. Campbell believed psychics were real but now that the consensus has shifted to skepticism Star Wars has moved into Sci-Fantasy.

Let's keep debating! Completely agree with characters being generally better in modern sci-fi and I think it's a reflection of that evolving understanding/ valuing of humannity which was guided by psychology, changes in how we study animals etc... There is just a lot more empathy going around! That being said, I think the internet and our 21st century cultures have huge psychological implications that I believe are moving us out of this type of evolution... I'm worried... But! that's something I respect about bobiverce, it takes a 21st century adult with his psychology to address issues of the future, a brilliant way of limiting the otherness factor for readers to give a more precise notion of all the other stuff going on. It's like we have an anchor to hold onto as we are pulled into this one-man show!)

If it isn't on your to-read list already, A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine really should be when we're talking modern sci-fi. Even with the praise it has gotten, I still think it is criminally underrated for how great Martine writes conversations between characters in this book - you really felt the weight of what they said, and what they chose not to say. IMO it's so impressive for a first release. It's has a quite interesting and pretty unique "tech feature", which the story is (sort of) centred on, and that's what originally made me read it. But I'm definitely staying with this series for the characters and the (almost hyper-)focus on culture/culture-clash, and though there wasn't a ton of world-building, what was got me hooked to see where she takes this series - it sort of felt like a prologue in the best way. And book #2 is coming out next month!

I'd suggest The Hereafter Bytes by Vincent Scott. Whimsical and thoughtful SF. Constellation Games by Leonard Richardson is another one in the same vein. Gamechanger by L.X. Beckett is one with a lot of adventure and some amusing whimsy.

Same on the iPhone - from a storytelling point of view, zoom meetings/seeing someone’s face in a conversation because that enables us to connect emotionally. I loathe zoom but it works in the story. And the telephone in its basic form existing much the same way for a century so it would make sense for smart phones to exist for a while...

If it helps in my Sci fi duology I'm currently writing the money is gold coins lol. it's Science Fantasy and since I'm a sucker for the classic Fantasy gold coin currency, I slipped it into my work haha. On a side note, we could have a space opera where they use bottle caps? Paying homage to Fallout in the process.

I think one argument for more positive sci/fi stories is that if we even survive far into the future and explore space it means we have figured out a lot of the stuff we're dealing with on Earth today. It seems logical.

Hot take. The best scifi series is The Book of the New Sun. Its use of archaic, non-fictional words to create a scene so foreign in nature, yet so much like our own history has yet to be replicated. It is a shame Gene Wolfe is not as well-known as he ought to be.

I think cellphones could evolve greatly in conjunction with other Technologies like programmable matter I imagine traveling salesman being able to head up that honey do list from across the country using programmable matter avatars might save a lot of marriages 10 times better than a Skype call

Not sure when something is classified as a classic but one science fiction series I have enjoyed over the years is Deathstalker by Simon R. Green. It came out in the early 90s and has excellent world building and characters. This story also had one of the most interesting relationship developments I've seen in a long time (Kid Death). The science is a bit vague at times and they use a lot of "its so old we don't understand it anyone" clichés but I think this is a great read. Really under rated book series.

I can't believe I'm about to say this but suppeerrrr hot take: The Host by Stephanie Meyer (the book, not the movie) is actually a really great example of sci-fi without the dark atmosphere. It leans YA so it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but even though it tackles a somewhat grim subject the atmosphere isn't dark and it has a happy ending, which we don't often see in sci-fi. And the premise and supporting details of the plot are unique, even if the format is familiar.

I'd love if more space-orientated sci-fi focused more on the time between when man got into space and when we are able to explore the universe. I think a lot of interesting things can be written in a time where we are still bound to this solar system. Even if there are no aliens to interact with (tho it could still totally be a thing) I think there is still plenty to say about humanity and the drive to keep exploring in an environment that is always one small step away from killing you. Plus I just really want to see explorations of space in a more immediate "what if" than the hypothetical time in which we figure out how to traverse the vastness of the universe.

The closest Daniel has come to talking about Philip K. Dick with Bladerunner 2049 :(((((( I’d really love to hear Daniel’s take on literally any novel or short story by Dick, and I think it’s sad that he has yet to make a video about him. Dick was (and in many cases still is) one of the greatest unsung writers of the Sci-fi genre and offered so much that still feels refreshing to read to this day.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve talked to people about Bladerunner or about the new Man In The High Castle show and ask, “What are your thoughts about Philip K. Dick?” And they’ll say, “Who???” They know the movies, they know ideas, but they don’t know who came up with them and wrote them. I could be wrong but it seems to me like Dick doesn’t nearly get enough attention (especially his novels).
