If you're comfortable talking about it-- I would love to hear about how you decided to pivot from medicine completely. It's so cool how untraditional of a path you've taken to get to where you are, and I absolutely love how positive you are about the STEM field-- so I'm just genuinely curious what made you make that pivot away. Was it the modeling, the burnout (I'm a med student myself and it for sure isn't glamorous over here haha), or do you still see yourself going back and pursuing it as a kind of 'second-wind' career?

This is ALL true !!! I was a model for 20 years, it’s EXACTLY as she is telling. Agencies make SOOO much money off of you! My ex-girlfriend, (first girlfriend actually) worked for Montana and had to travel the world. Seems like a great deal until she got the bills for the hotels, plane tickets and on site agents. After 3 months travelling through Australia and East Asia she got invoices for $80,000 and made about $110,000. Ten grand a month sounds great, but her credit card interest rates are a huge amount of that, as did her rent back home in Toronto and the taxes which were almost half. This was in the early 90’s so still pretty decent money, but then she didn’t work for over half a year because she offended her on site agent(s) because she wouldn’t sleep with any of their clients and didn’t want to act as arm candy for perverts at clubs and bars because of the many horror stories of men who would take advantage of the girls. My very, very short model career however was awesome. I got paid $1,700 to pose like an idiot in some boxer briefs and never modeled again. (I wanted to meet Clint Eastwood and a friend of mine said I could after they shot some panels for a magazine article. But I had to do “contact” sheet pics because they didn’t have enough men to fill their quota of bodies to show to their client. I somehow got picked and did one spread and never returned any phone calls because the photographer was a creep and kept asking me if I liked coke.

@@E42545That's one thing one needs to learn even before getting into modeling. There's so many 'types' that you can't let one set you on some spiral. What one brand wants (ex long flowing gown that is draped off the body) doesn't look good when it has no height to flow down. Others need curves to cinch down and accentuate and others are just simply supposed to be short to emphasize legs so if you're not leggy, you aren't the type.

I was scouted as a 13yo and was a model till 18yo. I've never really worked "properly", my hips were a lil too big. I honestly feel relieved it wasn't all in my head how wrong some things in the industry are. Here I was, in Poland, going through the same stuff - overpriced test shoots (a lot), being told to loose weight, crappy apartments, and all that. I remember I had a very bad time (first boyfriend drama) and I lost a few kg. When my agent saw me, she said I look gorgeous and asked how had I lost weight. After I answered "stress" she just went "well, the result is awesome so let's just hope you'll stay in this shape". They don't care about you and it honestly is about the whole industry, it's scary. I modelled for a couple year.. the gaslighting thing is soo true it hurts.. I was 22 and in fantastic shape. As a man and genetically I just couldn't get to the slender European model shape this agent wanted me to be. He called me more 'Miami' esque and to figure out how to lose weight and stay slimmer... I was at my lowest 9% body fat. I was starving myself and hated looking in the mirror. If only then I knew what I know now about how unhealthy that even was. I know this sounds like a humble brag about where I was, but I don't mean it in that way. Her story just took me back to his insults and shame to make me feel like i wasn't working hard enough to be in shape enough to get the jobs he told me I could if i was just a bit more toned. And the gaslighting about what you were to do on those jobs you did get. I was groped and fondled on a couple jobs but I was told that was good progress because i was the eye candy for the product they had me in. So the product was doing it's job to get that kind of attention, so you let it happen.. and then the pay!!! i waited so long for checks after gigs, only to get a fraction of what I was told my rate would be. Anyway, I am no longer in that business, left shortly after some of those gigs left me drained and ashamed. Sorry.. rant over.

9% body fat as a male isn't unhealthy. That's closer to athlete body fat numbers where they aren't evaluated upon how shredded you are. Below 5% isn't sustainable and unrealistic but 9%? Tons of people who aren't paid by how they look maintain at lower than that.

I was in the NY subway in 2012. There was a model, and her Agent having it out. Model crying, and screaming, and for a good reason. Agent just standing there, smoking like a chimney. She was fired off a MAXIM shoot because she shaved all her hair off. I'm talking 5'9" size 2, face of an angel, and shaved bald as an Eagle. The photographer the day before had mentioned shaving her head. She told her agent. Her agent said go do it, it'll make you MORE different/sellable. And now today it's a different photographer, and he wants girls with hair. Lots of hair! (It's Maxim Magazine, not Vogue) Agent walked off, after telling her to call once she had calmed down. Luckily there was a woman who walked over and talked to the girl. Her name was Katie Ford. She gave her a card, and told her to call her the next morning. I don't know if she's working or not? She was a pretty blue eyed girl from the Czech Republic that I wished all my future kids, had her genes. lol! I'm glad you got out alive, and somewhat sane. Stay well. XOXO!

Everything Haley is saying is true 💯. Model Agents works for models, but once they get a model that becomes well known or famous. They start to think highly of themselves and start degrading the models. Most Modeling Agents think more like this, "You need us more than we need you!", but in reality, they need the models more than the models need them. They don't make money if they don't have models (their employer) When I model for John Casablanca Agency, it took me 6-7 months to get paid.

I keep hearing about this in modeling, the system needs to change. Glad your strong and stepping out on your own, you don't need an agent and I am sure many models out there now can do without them. I was born and raised in the USA Hells Kitchen Manhattan in NYC but of Puerto Rican descent, brown eyes New Yorican. Dealt with a lot of racism and sexual harassment. Put people in their place. I did modelling classes for a couple years at Panache, it's an agency and modelling school. Anyone could take classes to learn how to walk on runways, photo shoots, interviews, makeup, skin care, and you got to build a portfolio. The first year was great. I did well. Some of the girls were nice. I wasn't able to go to out of town major events, though. I did get to participate in a hair show. I saw a girl who was made to shave her head at the next booth cos the people fried her head. I ended up with a perm. No questions were asked if I had a skin condition (I do) or allergic to anything. My scalp burned. The director at Panache first said not to fix anything about myself. But said my eyebrows were too messy. I was 13 or 14 at the time. I had to get my eyebrows professionally waxed. After one photoshoot, we were going over the shots. They seemed to have a problem with a crooked tooth. The next year, one girl was getting noticed by other agencies. She went from nice to snobby. The agency kept asking if I was "taking the classes seriously". I didn't even know what that meant. My mom was getting pissed off with me because of how much the classes cost. I wasn't that tall but I could be in what's called "petite" cos I was 5''4. I just lost interest after I failed the second year.

I’m about halfway through but I’m so sorry your agent didn’t let you be the real you and so happy you post every funny or cringe thing you want to post now! I’ve been an alternative model for over a decade now and it’s completely different than this. People in the horror or tattoo or just alt fashion community find me through photographers or alt brands I’ve shot for and just message. It’s been much more accepting, but there are also less safeguards because I don’t have an agency doing any kind of background checks or research on companies so I have to rely on Google and other people who’ve worked with them to find out if they’re ok, meaning I pass on a lot of gigs because I can’t get enough info on the photographer. Also isn’t as profitable as what you got into, but I’ve never been as gorgeous as you and I’m now 35 so my days are numbered😂😂😂

Actor here. First and last time I auditioned for an acting agent it was literally comical how mean he was being. I was a grown adult at that point but I look young so it wasn't "weird" for me to enter the industry. If I'd been younger I maybe would've taken the meanness to heart but as an adult I just sat there and internally laughed hysterically at everything. It was like the agent was putting on this "mean, tough agent" show. There were a couple of good nuggets in what he said, for example I learned a new way that I like to do my hair for headshots and discovered a new good acting coach based on some things he said. After absolutely slamming me, the agent tried to sign me!! I just said thank you for your time I don't think it's a good fit and I left. I'm extremely glad I didn't sign with that agency for many reasons including that I later heard horror stories from other actors about that agent and other agents who behaved similarly. I'd already heard horror stories before but as I heard even more it just farther affirmed my reasons for not signing.

I modeled briefly during my young, halfway decent looking days. I can confirm that modeling agents are annoying. The industry probably needs a models union to at least partially re-balance the power dynamic between the models and the other players in the industry. That way models can sign contracts similar to pro athletes where they will make a guaranteed amount of money for a certain tenure as long as the model doesn't violate the contract based on the rules witihin the contract.

I will never forget doing a "test shoot" at some creepy photographer's house, where I ended up just crying because the makeup lady had been making all sorts of snide comments and poked my eye with mascara, then the photographer insisted on me wearing a shirt that was completely see through. My agent ended up putting a photo in my book where I am very clearly upset, with red eyes, in that goddamn see-through shirt, because "it's a beautiful photo". Just fucking no. I was so young. Would be cool if you created your own agency that is actually positive and you could change how the modeling agents treat people by being the example. I always wanted to be a model. But then one day in a store the cashier mentioned my sister could be a model and I piped up and said I would love to be a model and she gave me this look like she was disgusted. That impacted me so much. I ended up doing two charity event runway shows in my early 20s. I loved it. But I’ve always been told I’m not pretty enough or even skinny enough to be a plus size model.
