I have my mother’s Harmony House China in the Fleur pattern. It is beautiful, with a pale yellow rose and grayish green leaves. My parents were married in 1952. I love setting a table with beautiful dishes and try to do that for the holidays. I enjoyed seeing your collection. All the patterns are still beautiful and could be used today. I really enjoy your channel!

The two I remember best were the corn set and, of course, the ubiquitous Fire King jadeite. You did well staging these sets, with the coordinating table or tablecloth, Kevin. This was fun.

Loved this vid!!! You made very nice settings. Love how you make the effort to match the the table w/ the setting. Our family had a huge amount of hand painted fine china that was inherited. Was only used during Thanksgiving & Christmas, & it wasn't allowed in the dishwasher. The pattern that was used on a daily basis was very beautiful. I believe dad said it was Blue Onion or Blue Danube. Always thought the soup bowls & salt/pepper shakers were the most unique pieces. And the cups always made coffee & tea taste much better. Can't wait for part 2! God bless.

Fascinating! Thank you for triggering wonderful memories for me. My mom would collect the Swiss Alpine China from our local A&P store on Detroit’s east side. We had a little kitchen area in our basement for canning, frying chicken, etc., where my aunts and grandmother would gather to make chruściki on the ancient gas stove. Swiss Alpine was the pattern of the plates downstairs. For some reason, I never remember them ever appearing upstairs. I really enjoyed this presentation! Enjoy your day, Kevin!

I bought my first "good" dishes at Sears in the 70's for my first Thanksgiving. White, a silver edge with tiny pink and blue roses. I hope they're in part 2. I have an expensive set I offered to my daughter, she wanted the dishes from Sears. It really was a quality place to buy things. You make me homesick, lol. Love your videos.

My husband and I would like to thank you for this show. We had received a couple of platters from a Aunt that had passed. We love these platters but especially the round one which I use to give him a Dutch Baby Pancake. It’s the perfect size. I’ve looked through eBay to find it but because there is no name on the bottom, I was unable to locate them. You have shown me that they are the Swiss Alpine by Marcrest. Fun episode! I inherited quite a lot of different types of China. My mom loved Home Laughlin and used the pattern "Fluffy Rose" as our everyday dishes. And no, they couldn't go in the microwave, AND she never had a dishwasher. Shocking, I know! Thanks for the video, Kevin!

The problem I have with my beautiful old dishes is they don’t go in the microwave. I don’t own a dishwasher but my husband never thinks his food is hot enough so he microwaves almost all his hot food. I love old dishes. I use my restaurant ware the most and i do microwave it but it’s too heavy for my cabinets so it’s not very handy to grab for everyday. Love watching you show off your collections.

I'm a lover of tablecloths, napkins, placemats, runners, aprons and doilies. This is so much fun! We should all do dinner sometime. Great episode, Kevin! I'm a sucker for pretty tableware. I have a Lenox pattern that's been in production for 100 years, and yes, the cups are rediculous. Wonder of wonders, Lenox is now making mugs in the pattern! Dishwasher is ok, microwave no. Last year we found my parents' Melmac dishes in the cottage attic, and my granddaughter pounced. She's keeping them for her first apartment. There are literally millions of tableware patterns. Replacements, Ltd. is a great place to go for that missing piece or to fill out a pattern. One can only do just so many antique malls 😅

Great video Kevin! The Harkerware Corythian came in many different colors such as gray, different greens and I believe in pink as well. They are decorated using the technique of "pate sur pate" , a French expression meaning "paste on paste". The decoration are applied by hand with a brush. I remember when my mother, every evening, would set the table, always with a tablecloth, for the next morning breakfast. There are beautiful memories and thank you Kevin for bringing them back to us.

My mother’s pattern was “Bessie” by Noritake. Dad gifted her with a large set in the late 50’s. I still have them and occasionally use them. Wonderful memories of large family holiday meals.

I recognized that first set as Harmony House. My great-grandmother's dishes are Harmony House Fleur. They're the same dishes as those, but with a different floral pattern.

Yes, that first number in the Homer Laughlin stamp is the year it was made. A great way to date those pieces. I refuse to use paper plates and plastic anything. I use Blue Ridge pottery every day. I wash it in the dishwasher and have for 37 years with no problems at all. My maternal grandmother had a lot of Mt. Clemens Mildred she got at SH Kress and my paternal grandmother used Blue Ridge Virginia Gold. I have both their sets of dishes---nobody else wanted them! Thanks for the great video on dinnerware and I look forward to part two.

@@cavalcadeoffood I do have a few sets of Blue Ridge but my everyday Blue Ridge is all different patterns mixed together. And I don't use the cups and saucers since I prefer coffee mugs. You could also feature other pieces like platters, gravy boats, covered vegetable bowls, egg cups, sugar bowls, creamers and other odd pieces they made back then. I did like your including salt and pepper shakers in Part 1.

My mother loved to set the table so we had many sets of dishes. We had two sets of every day. We had one set for Sundays. And we had her China which only came out on holidays. I still have the China which I only use on holidays. Her pattern is Chantilly by Haviland from France. I also have her sterling which was only used on holidays and very special occasions. The pattern is Chippendale by Towle. I also have my grandmothers silver plate which she gave to my mother sometime after my parents got married. That was only used on Sundays and I still use it that way as well. There’s nothing better than a beautifully set table! Thanks for highlighting some of your sets, Kevin!

This was fun... I have some old Harkerware myself, though from the 1950's, they came in pink, turquoise, yellow, white, and gray insides with a tan exterior. No full sets, but do have a pink divided dish that I have not used, and the gravy boat in yellow. I also have a little compote plate in yellow and used to have the vegetable bowl, until I accidentally skimmed it with my stemless wine glass one evening and took a chunk out of the rim's bottom and later found a crack just below the initial damage so out it went. I ate out of it all the time. They were safe to put in the dishwasher thankfully and would love to get some of the Franciscan ware Starburst dishes. They were also dishwasher safe as both patterns I believe came out when early dishwashers were coming on the scene in the mid to late 50's. Technically, I know the dishwasher was around before then, but not common though.

Hi John - Harker made some great patterns. I have a some Franciscan from the late 50's and it is all fine for the dishwasher. Yes, I think by then many manufacturers were starting to produce products that would withstand the dishwashers as they were becoming more common. Thanks!

I've had better luck on eBay or Etsy for full sets. With thrift stores, either all the cups are gone or the dinner plates. Some of the better antique stores have full sets. Also estate sales.

My mother had a set of Noritake that my brother sent her while in the Air Force during Vietnam...it had little saucer / bowl that you used with your teacup...they would dip their coffee over in it and drink....like the song drinking from my saucer because my cup over flows..I love your videos .

Love the MCM dinnerware (and 40's as well)! Great collection you have there! I, as others, have a few one-offs of the Swiss Alpine. I always wondered why there was only a few , now I know why! Our everyday set growing up was Vernon's "Tickled Pink" (pink, speckled) and my mom's brother's family had the Vernon "Heavenly Days" (blue / speckled). I still have the entire TP set, and use it! Do you have any vintage restaurant or diner ware? There are quite a few collectors who love the heavy duty table ware manufactured for the restaurant world. There are even pieces made exclusively for the old railroad dining cars or fancy hotel dinnerware. It's a whole world unto itself. Beautiful collection!!

I have a set of six oval plates of Steelite Stokes on Trent. I got them many years ago for 10 cents a piece at a yard sale. White with dark blue rims that have a multi color flecks on the blue. They are my every day dinner plates. Heavy as hell especially loaded with food. I used to collect dishware to use, but don't anymore, because I have way too many dishes, platters, etc.

Several of my relatives worked there painting the china. It was torn down in the 80's I think. It is a shame that we have lost alot of USA potteries. You set up the tables beautifully!

Interesting regarding the Harmony Rose china. I picked up a partial set about 45 years ago at a thrift store. It has one grey rose in the center, white bone china with silver rim. On the back is a green and black crest and says made in Bavaria. Never seen anything similar until now. I have 3 dinner plates, 4 side plates, 4 sandwich plates and 4 soup bowls.

I have a large collection of Hall Autumn Leaf. It started with a singe large mixing bowl (from a set of 3) that was my grandmother’s. Very common, many pieces found at flea markets. Been collecting this for over 40 years. Still find it now and then, 😊

I absolutely love vintage china! I’m currently on the hunt for a pattern called Pink Caladiums, by W.S. George. I happened across the large platter one day at a thrift store, & absolutely fell in love with the color & design! I also have a full set of my grandmother’s 1930s American Sweetheart dishes. She always told me that there wasn’t a point in having something if you weren’t going to use it, so I make sure to use my “fancy” dishes regularly. I can’t wait to see more of your collection!

I love old china sets and patterns. Thankfully I don't have your storage capacity or we'd be competitors. My grandparents collected Stangl pottery and lived near Flemington NJ where there was an outlet and Trenton which had high quality clay deposits. Lenox was also a large producer there. A sign above a bridge in Trenton read "Trenton Makes, The World Takes"...well days gone by. Looking forward to part 2! The Corinthian pattern is quite lovely. Perhaps it was hand painted?

I do not have a dishwasher ( my last 5 houses did not have one) and enjoy washing my nice dishes. I could have 100s of patterns if I had the room. I certainly appreciate your channel. I just splurged on 4 plates since I bought some fruit saucers for the cats in an old pattern Cameo Rose( Hall China)....I did not need but.... I grew up with Autumn Leaves by Hall from the Jewel Tea man coming a few times a month! I use them everyday a long with the sterling since why not!

Over the years I collected many accompanying pieces and it was our everyday dishes (except when children were small, then I had Corelle😉). I have inherited 4 sets of china and my grown daughters don't want any of it 🙁

Enjoyed the history lesson. Love the Rooster and Alpine patterns. I have some plates with an atomic pattern. Need to see what it is. Used to have a fair amount of Lu-Ray but get rid of it. Regret it. And now Corelle has become collectible. I have sine Crazy Daisy along with some Pyrex in the pattern. My mom's good china is Gloria by Haviland New York. Bet I haven't eaten on it 15 times since 1957.

When I was a child, we had 30s Orange Fiestaware plates. I had no clue what that meant until I was on college in 98. There in a glass case in the Physics department was a plate just like what we used every day. This time, there was a Geiger counter beside it, with an explanation that uranium was in the glaze. Might explain my weirdness.

LOL! Thanks, Chris! There were all kinds of things in some of those old glazes, and I heard there was also uranium in the cobalt blue and other color dishes from that era. Lead was another ingredient commonly found.

Oh my gosh, you just answered a mystery for me. I grew up with the Swiss Alpine pattern but we never had all the pieces. Now I know why. They probably did get them piece by piece from the grocery store. I have "springtime" china from my grandmother. It was made in CT by the International Silver Co. I also have silverware from them but I don't know the pattern name.

Hi Debbie! The Swiss Alpine was a popular supermarket china and every week or two they would feature a different piece. Someone mentioned that the A&P stores in the Detroit area had them, so I'm sure they were in many other stores across the country. Thanks!

Safeway or Piggly Wiggly were giving the Alpine away when I was a kid and this was our everyday dishes for years.

My mom and my granny traded these in for Melmac and Corelle because it was lighter and harder to break. I think this was directly related to me having to learn dishwashing skills. 🤣

Hi, Kevin, loved this episode! We were in an antique store yesterday, here in CA, and lo! There was a Swiss Alpine platter! It was $30. I passed on it, but had to laugh: did the proprietor know this was grocery store china? Has it become collectable? Thanks for the tutorial, I would never have known 😅

I have a set of Metlox Poppytrail. I use it for thanksgiving because it’s durable and fall colors. I also have some Harmony House everyday wear. My grandmother left me her Mikasa Versailles.

You are right about nobody wanting fine china today. When my mother passed away, I attempted to sell her Royal Worcester Chevy Chase china set to Replacements Limited. They didn’t want it as they already had too much of that pattern. Young brides no longer want china and crystal. I guess collectors are the only ones interested in it. I ended up keeping it but I never use it for the same reasons you gave. I do use Corelle Frost White every day. No paper plates for me!

Hi wmalden - I read the fine china is no longer a big registry items for brides, or fine silverware or crystal. I think most people no longer host formal dinners and gatherings. Corelle is wonderful and that's my everyday dishware, too! Thanks!

I'm not sure. Lead was a common ingredient in a lot of glazes back then.

I have my china for 56 years. I do use it once a year every year. It does get hand washed.

My mother had Thanksgiving for 14 people every year, and she used all her good china, silver and crystal. The highlight of the day was all the women in the kitchen doing the dishes! No dishwasher for the “good stuff”! The only time I saw my grandmother’s good china was when she used it at Christmas. I keep mine out and use my good stuff when I need a mood lift. Also, as a very wise Southern woman once said, if you don’t use your good stuff, Number 2 (wife) might!

Mother bought me two sets of china from Woolworths that are now worth $400.00 each set. Love the dishes. No chips. I was about 10 and she said my Hopeless chest needed to start. It was to fill a cedar chest for when left home.

I've got my parents very popular Currier & Ives dinnerware "The Old Grist Mill" by Royal. Made in the USA. I don't know what time frame the design is from. I decided that after 22 years of marriage , I was finally tired of my white. Dansk dishes . It's fun reliving childhood memories while I use these plates. Special bonus, the blue and white dishes go with my decor.
