ah no, I did have some reference pictures on the side. Like I googled some golden statues to see how to draw the golden shimmer. I also looked up some old vintage mining helmets to see what they looked like. So I do rely on references to some degree.

I've fallen in love with these designs. I love F&H 1 being based in the medieval ages and being able to excuse the more grotesque designs and their "stingers". You don't see that stuff all too often in modern media. I didn't think I would like F&H 2 monster design because of said change. But I've never been more glad to be wrong. The variety in enemy design is masterful, while still retaining the horrific nature of the world. I've always been more horrified of the F&H 2 monsters. The Poe especially terrifies me 😅 If you don't mind my asking: What brought along this change in your design philosophy?

Nothing in particular brought change. I just don't want to be one trick pony I guess and if I've used an idea already, I'm pretty hesitant at using it again. That's just lazy. I don't think Termina is that light on stingers either, I've just tried to be more - uh - creative with them? Although in general you're right, I do feel like I'm moving towards less 'extreme' direction. There are numerous reasons for it, most important being that I just feel like it - but also thematic reasons weigh a lot. F&H1's whole theme required very oppressive feel and that kind of content felt more appropriate in that game. Termina's themes aren't the same and designs follow that.

That jackhammer looking like a giant pick being capable of completely jamming into someone and splitting them in half is a horrific weapon on something as gnarly as this minotaur wielding it! Oddly they look like something you'd encounter between the Museum & that particular bunker within. Just speculation.

have you ever thought of making a book for this game? i find it would be amazing to have a book based on fear and hunger's lore or etleast a "collector's artbook" of the game with scrapt ideas and drawings explaining how you come up with these ideas for the game.

Yeah I've thought about it. The problem is that I don't really have many leftover sketches or such. Since I'm a solo dev for the most part, I just make what I want for the game. There is no need to bounce ideas back and forth with devs, game directors and artists. So I don't have THAT much material for a book really.

One thing that I appreciate is the way you make use of things like smudging in the artwork for a lot of these designs. Makes them look like the results you can get from a lot of those AI image renderings that look more like something you'd remember from a dream. Just enough detail missing that they feel... off. The Bobby design especially just makes some part of my monkey brain panic even though it's not super hard to handle. 10/10
