Myst was actually a pretty impressive achievement for such a small studio back in the early 90's. The idea was that they wanted to make a game that would appeal to adults. So with it being a dad game, I would say that they succeeded beyond expectations. Kids that grew up playing it are now dads themselves enjoying Myst.

Okay. The Backstory Of Myst: TL;DR Edition. There was an ancient pre-human civilization on Earth called the D'ni that figured out how to link to different worlds using books. While some thought it was creating worlds, this process actually made use of the multiverse thing, with some worlds linked to being effectively doomed by the nature of their existence. The D'ni did some crap and eventually their civ fell to ruin. And the remainder of them scattered. Then one of the remaining D'ni named Gehn had a son named Atrus with some chick, then one thing led to another and eventually Atrus stole his wife Catherine from Gehn's world of Riven before locking his dad who turned out to be a dick in Riven as it was collapsing and escaping to their ideal paradise of Myst. And then they had kids, who turned out to also be bastards. Abridged TL;DR: People from Atlantis invented Minecraft and everything went to Hell. I read the little book thing meant to accompany the games like 14 years ago, so my memory of it is foggy.

@Stephen Robinson The constellation in the game has a passing resemblance to the southern cross bar the lack of epsilon crucis. Yahtzoid however is more wrong of the two for insisting that a cross must have a fifth in the middle. The Southern cross lacks this with the two axii being formed by the four main stars and outside of the Eureka flag, lacks a central star in all insignia and flags. New Zealand for example even omits epsilon crucis in their flag.

Gabe's description of Snowpiercer makes me think he kinda blew past the main conceit of the film on his way to the literal plot and technical details. It's still average to me, but like the biggest thing I got out of it was that the train isn't actually a literal train, it's civilization. Hence the whole class struggle thing, the lies, sacrificing children, etc. My only personal justification is that it's supposed to be silly so you'd realize it isn't meant to be taken literally, though I do agree it might be better if it could be taken literally.

Myst is one of those polarizing games -- you tend to either really enjoy it or really not. It does represent a time that I miss in that it was a focused production from a very small group of people; two brothers, in fact. They did pretty much everything: the design and writing, the sound and music (which was very good), and even the acting. Today's games feel like they don't really belong to anyone -- aren't anyone's real vision. Sure they're polished and huge, but they lose something when every plot point and line of dialogue feels focus-grouped and then worked on by dozens who do what the bosses tell 'em.

The new Robocop movie is fine, not great just OK. But this conversation. "Paint him black" "People like him silver, black would be intimidating" "I don't care paint him black, people don't know what they like until you give it to them" Fuck you film! I didn't care much about the old films so I have no nostalgia to ruin, but I know what I like and I like him silver. That scene (like the DMC white wig scene) was just a slap in the face.
@bowrey11810 жыл бұрын
Neither of them are direct slaps to the face, they are both ironic references and foreshadowing, as both scenes end up being reverted. Dante has white hair by the end of DMC, and Robocop is back in his classic silver armour by the end of Robocop. Both aesthetic changes represent influence on the characters, with Dante's rugged appearance showing his lack of focus and care for the world around him, and Robocops black colour scheme representing modern influences and corporate line of thought.

The Iain M. Banks book Gabriel mentioned, Consider Phlebas, is well worth reading. It begins with a character chained up in a small prison cell. The cell is airtight, and in the rooms above a banquet is being held in his honour. As people go to the toilet, all their waste is channeled into the cell, where over many hours it will build up and drown the character. I loved that wonderfully sadistic concept so much that after hearing that, I straight up bought the whole book. I was not disappointed with the rest.

Di, k >.> So you count degrees starting from 360 and counting down? It wouldn't work elsewise because nothing is designed to work backwards like the way you said. It's not like choosing the metric system over the english system. You'd be getting your numbers wrong every single time. I guess that's why you'd be stuck on this puzzle... or any degrees-based puzzle...
@dik431610 жыл бұрын
I'm starting at the right-hand side (on the clock it would be 3). It works perfectly fine in geometry (and related mathematical offsprings). And I'm not on good terms with geography, so you and your weird degree counting is something which I can take or leave, frankly. Edit, I start at 0, counting up, obviously. Counting down from 360 isn't really helpful when you have more than two pies.

It's strange. I thought that Myst would've resonated Yahtzee more, being a Dark Souls fan. Very different games sure, but I mean more on the whole piecing the game together. Like that compass puzzle. It gave you everything you needed to solve it- all the pieces, it was just you needed was to figure it out. Guess it's just a matter of who has the patience for Myst.
@Castodas10 жыл бұрын
So... unfortunately, these guys had no real appreciation for a bit of puzzle adventure and to top it off that was probably the most difficult puzzle to solve in myst (in my opinion) which dragged it even worst for them (I was stuck on that map forever compared to the rest of the game). Anyways, I think they are being a little harsh about it as it is a game that requires you to really explore everything. Books on the bookshelf in the observatory on Myst Island contains a good bit of information for navigating the first island- which was hardly explored at all. (The books also shed a bit of information on wtf is going on) The plot can be confusing, but it is really good and for those that enjoy Riven (and that is by far my favorite), this episode of the series is crucial to really understanding the rest. On a last thought, I really wish they would have gone the space ship route first, because watching them figure out the tones between the keyboard and the ship's computer (?) would have been quite entertaining. That and because that particular world was the most fun for me.

As KZbin's foremost Let's Player of Myst games, I have to agree at least somewhat in that Myst has not aged well. But to say that it had "3D graphics and nothing else" is being a bit... unfair. What it had was atmosphere, intrigue, and exploration. Mixed with a bunch of puzzles with varying degrees of success. But at least Myst attempted to integrate the puzzles into an environment, unlike The 7th Guest which literally was just a collection of slide puzzles that were randomly presented to you in different room. Not to mention the most important part: Myst led to Riven, and Riven is and always will be the best game ever made.

You've made me afraid to watch, now … Considering how much Yahtzee rants on about how atmosphere enhances a game (SotC, SH2, Dark Souls), I'd have thought he'd take that to at least be a redeeming factor in this instance.

Did anyone notice Yahtzee "dudududud"'ing the magic roundabout theme?
@Schwallex8 жыл бұрын
He only did it on seven separate occasions throughout the video. And only once did he explicitly say "That's the magic roundabout theme". How could anyone possibly notice that? You certainly didn't.

You can join in with Yahtz and Gabe at 41:50. I recommend a bassy 'Bom, Bom, Bom, Bom' rhythm. I hope we get more Yahtzee singalongs in the future.

Watching Gabe trying to figure out what direction was Southeast gave me a little too much joy
