Yeah, I am a beginner and freecodecamp is hard to understand sometimes. Like, what they want you to do is simple once you figure it out, but the way they word it makes it difficult.

I’ve been going thru all your videos. You are the chosen one. The story you have resonates well with me. 28 learning to code, high school dropout, haven’t really had a job or career path I’ve ever been proud of. I was making really good money in the oilfield but had to sacrifice my family, my relationship, and majority of my life working 17 hours a day. I want to code, I will learn to code. Thank you for the inspiration sir. I hope to meet you one day once I make it into coding.

Here I am too, another 28 year old, high school dropout, worked since age 18 making good money and living comfortably but not really with a career in mind so I will eventually face a roadblock. I just finished JavaScript on FreeCodeCamp and looking to do more projects to learn even more.

Same here, 27. High school degree but college droupout. Made decent money in the restaurant industry as a chef/butcher. I broke my hand in 2017 and had major reconstructive surgery and had 18 screws placed in my dominant hand. So no more heavy lifting of any kind has made it very hard to live. I had to change industries entirely and took a major pay cut. I WILL get a job in development. Dorian has been a major inspiration

Start with fCC (beginner friendly), then introduce TOP into your learning plan. Note, you don't have to do them one after the other, slice & dice and build conceptual + practical expertise. Also, I highly use Anki flashcards to recall & help retain all atomic facts I learn along the way.

I was trying to do a calculator for a lab at school, it took me WEEKS. I was never able to pulled it off, got the code from a class mate and I didn't understand Anything. Moving on, I go on to do other assignments and do ok. Then, I was finishing my final assignment yesterday, and I had to do 6 aps/projects. And I end up creating a small story telling game out of the nowhere which was pretty nice, turns out I am actually good at design for being a beginner, and I manage to do the calculator myself in less than 10 minutes 😂😂. I try and failed over 25 projects in youtube and online forums because the difficulty was too damned high, but in the process I actually learn a fair bit.

it's important to understand that the certificate is worth zero and the idea is not to dodge any exercice to go faster to the certificate. You can rush the certificate in less than 10 hours using google and AI but you will not learn much. It is the process that is important and the repetitive tasks! Do some hours everyday and in a few months you will have a pretty decent skill to start doing beginner/junior work

For people just starting out, I'd strongly recommend starting with free stuff online. If nothing else, it is important to make sure that you actually enjoy (or at least, don't hate) coding before you try to make a career out of it. After you've gotten your feet wet using some free resources, I don't think there's any one correct path. As with all education, there are good and bad programs that cost $$ out there. The good ones offer real upsides, including career support to help you get your foot in the door. Obviously the downside, even for the good programs, is that you have to pay. It is an investment that may or may not make sense, and there are definitely shady bootcamps out there. However, dismissing all paid coding instruction as a "cash grab" is... a wild exaggeration? Maybe that's just embellishment for clickbait / engagement - which I get is necessary for content creators, hate the game not the player, etc. - but in any event it isn't accurate. Personally, I found a coding bootcamp to be immensely helpful for changing careers. I've held a software development job for about four years and I am loving it. Others have had bad experiences at bootcamps and feel they could have gotten just as much from free resources. I would say, don't assume you _have_ to pay for instruction in order to get into coding as a career, but also, don't rule it out. Start with free resources online, and see how it goes from there. If you enjoy it, but feel like you hit a wall and need actual instruction in a more traditional classroom setting, there's no shame in that, and you should look into your options. You should definitely vet any programs before you sign up, though! Ask a lot of questions, do research, etc. If you feel like they are hard-selling you or rushing to get you signed up and paid, that's a red flag.
