Let's Fix It: PS4 Error SU-42118-6 won't boot

NOTE: Before trying all the safe mode steps, if you've tried cleaning your ps4 before and had this issue after putting everything back together, go back in and MAKE SURE every connector dealing with the blu ray is well connected. Looked at tons of videos but none were working, even after factory reset(intializing) still no progress until i went back in and realized one of the wires to the blu ray wasnt completely connected. It wasnt the ribbon but the white connector with 4 wires that connects to the daughter board, started it up and now i can use discs again. Hopes this helps for the ps community. @letsfixit thanks for putting me in the right direction.

@@adonnistv7130 No, i try to clean it frequently, so sometimes im in a rush to put it back together and all the wires are crucial to be connected back the right way after cleaning. Noticed one of the wires wasn't securely connected that makes the bluray player not work or beep at all...

Thanx man, just welded a piece of thin wire between the two ends and it's alive again. Was a pain in the arse, the damn fuse was thiner than the wire under microscope.

I was able to fix mine, I had taken it apart before and it wouldn’t update 7.51. I opened it, took out and reinserted the Blu-ray connectors. Hooked it up just now and it instantly updated(no error). For some people it might be the blu ray player not allowing the update. Was going to buy a new(used) ps4 but glad I got it fixed just in time for Ghost of Tsushima.

That's great you got it working! I think its a requirement that the bluray drive has to work to be able to update. Seems they should get rid of this requirement as I think most games will just be downloaded in the future.

@@letsfixit4404 I agree, there is almost nothing lost from functionality if the drive isn't working. Also making the drive such an essential component means that on the older models, where bluray controller board is married to the motherboard if MB goes bad, you can't even buy another one, unless you find one with it's accompanying bluray board(which is almost as rare a find as a unicorn). If one could install the OS without working bluray it wouldn't be as much of a problem.

Armaanla it has to be plugged in on both sides. This is how the Blu-ray drive communicates with the motherboard.

Another fix that i just did : Gently press on the top and Pull the same cable in the video out and clean both sides and blow some air on it due to dust and gentle put both ends back and in and that should also fix it

I got a slim off ebay with the same error, also opened previously, even though the seller claimed he never opened it, but the clamp inside was actually mounted in upside down, which tells me the seller is full of bs (I am pretty sure it would have overheated fast if he had ever used it like this). It wasn't the issue with the 7.50 update, the PS4 requested some 6.xx update. I had another mainboard laying around from a PS4 I got just for the case (seemed to have a defective PSU, which turned out to be true), switched the mainboards and the PS4 now works. It wasn't the drive (which works fine). Now I either have a donor board or I probably check if that board also works in another PS4, if I get one with a defective HDMI port or something.

Interesting thanks for sharing. Some of the IC chips are on the mainboard that control the blue-ray player. I think there are some fuses you might check. I haven't worked with slims yet but I just got in a slim today for the first time not sure whats wrong with it yet. I will make a video with it soon.

I got lucky with the 7.50 but 7.51 just isn’t happening for me. When I turn on or restart my PS4 it won’t accept disc or eject until after some time, i will hear a click on the Blu-ray drive that’s when it will accept and eject discs but it still won’t play games only dvd or cd. So as soon as I eject I try to update the firmware 7.51 and the same error pops up and no longer accept or eject until after some time/hour

*In my case: the power ribbon cable was disconnected.* It must have gotten loose when I cleaned out my ps4 and reinstalled the power module. Check for a loose cable otherwise buy one on Amazon for $7 !

Ryan Pescott that’s not good could be a corrupt bios and the Bluetooth chip is not working. Have you tried a different controller? I would take it back to the repair place and talk to them about it as they should fix it.

I just got my ps4 slim fixed and he said that in the motherboard there was an SMD defective and u have to replace it via micro soldering. this fault leads to a broken disk drive thus leading to that specific error. So there's the problem.

It's most probably the fuses on the motherboard that needs to be replaced . Usually, it's the one called F6202

Try cleaning the laser with some IPA Isopropyl Alcohol 99%. I think this something that is pretty easy to try at first.

If you just take the hard drive out and put the same one in, no you will not. If you do an upgrade you will also not lose your saves. If you do a full reinstall, yes you will lose you saves without doing a backup first.

@@badger3286 shii bro u dont wanna do it but, my dumb ass ubplugged it about over 40 times prolly more(the wrong way that fucks the ps4 up) like unplug the whole cord then i rebuilt the database a total of 8 times then intialized it lost everything (dont fucking intialized it if you dont know ur info for ur accounts) then rebuilt the database and restarted the ps4 then it worked. Took like 7 days.

Is it a slim version or a fat PS4. Some of the slims you can just replace the drive if it’s a fat PS4 it’s unlikely as they are married to the motherboard
