First, holy moly that you could buy the EXACT one you had! Hats off. And we’ll done on it all, as usual you did a fab job! I really hope young women watch this channel because you show them they can do it! And yes, Like you, I have tackled some things that I was really proud when I finished.. and we should be. The winter before my father passed, we had a huge snowstorm and they had a deck off the side of the house that was about 10 ft off the ground. The weight of the snow was not good so I needed to shovel it off so they would not have any problems. It turned out to be a beautiful sunny day so he sat out on the deck while I shoveled. We chatted as I worked, at one point I laughingly turned to him and said “Aren’t you glad you didn’t raise a prissy girl who couldn’t do anything?” With a big smile he said, ‘ I never intended to’. It was his way of telling me I could do anything I wanted or needed to do, and that’s what he wanted! It is one of my best memories, and he has been gone 20 yrs. ❤

I'm of the generation when you had to put your own plug on any new electrical appliance; I've been doing it since I was a child. I was 31 when appliances started coming with the plug attached! (1992) I have never swapped out a European plug for a British one, though. I've done basic plumbing in my time: fitted new kitchen taps, plumbed in washing machine and dishwasher waste pipes, tiling, etc. I was doing upcycling before it was called upcycling. I made a lovely bookcase for our daughter from an old, drop-leaf dining table that had seen better days. These days I'm limited by my arthiritis, so mainly stick to card-making, and upcycling small things like jars, tins, and bottles. I've just remembered that I did replace a broken cooker hood myself back in 1990/1. Well done for doing yours and, don't worry, most people's hoods are manky behind the scenes. I have to admit, I wouldn't have bothered to clean the extractor pipe.

When I moved into my new place, I procrastinated on cleaning under the range hood / exhaust system for a year. It didn’t look terrible - it was mostly just discolored with a gold film - and no one else was likely to look under the hood anyway. Let me tell you, when I finally tackled that project, it took me about 8 hours of back-breaking labor over the course of 4 days to restore under the hood to a pristine condition. It was so exhausting, I could only work at 2 hour intervals. Old grease build-up is one of the most difficult interior cleaning challenges - even with good degreasers. One can’t use steel wool, abrasives or oven cleaner on these parts because they damage the surfaces. It’s all muscle - and I was sore for a week! Now I meticulously maintain the hood because I can’t bear the thought of going through that again. No one in their right mind would clean a broken exhaust hood needing replacement!!!

What a great job! Congratulations! And be proud of changing the plug. It's a new skill and it's only smart to ask someone to check if you did it right. A couple of years ago I learned to rewire an antique lamp and give it all the modern electrical parts necessary. Since then I did only 3 more times and had my husband silently watching what I was doing, so that I could figure it all out on my own but not burn down the house because of it. Today was the day it did the 4th lamp, and I'm still proud of my accomplishment and a pretty pink glass 1930's lamp has a new life.

He’s an electrical engineer so he was telling me how the cow ate the cabbage so to speak, and my listening/comprehension skills were on strike that day so I kept questioning him, and I am NOT an electrician or an electrical engineer. He finally told me to just help hold the damn thing and close my eyes so I couldn’t see what he was doing. We eventually got it done, but we also had several of those discussions about divorce with one particular threat being me telling him he wouldn’t be breathing if he kept talking lol. We survived and r still married hahaha - oh, and he’s still breathing! 😂😂😂

Just a little heads up since winter is almost upon us, If you take your can of WD40 out to your car, just give the door hinges, and the rubber seals around the doors a wipe over with some WD40 or 3 in 1 oil and this will keep the rubbers nice and supple and prevent them from cracking and perishing. I usually spray my door locks to prevent them from freezing up if we get snow. It’s a quick 5 minute preventative measure to keep your car in good shape for winter. Hope you’re keeping well and Happy with your two furry friends over in Dublin. Much love, Dave Hayes, Oxford, England.
