This week I borrowed the latest generation of the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch with Co-Axial 3861 movement to see if the watch I was once obsessed over can win me back with this upgraded version. Is this Speedy the best, most iconic Omega of all time, or is it an overhyped, overpriced, watch cliché? In this video I review the Moonwatch Co-Axial 3861 with an in depth analysis of five things I absolutely love about the latest edition of this Speedmaster, as well as four major dislikes that put me off this watch. Join me for another independent video all about this massively important moon-going legend. What do you think of the watch featured in this video? Please share your thoughts in the comments!

When I bought the Speedmaster with the 3861 Caliber the friend who accompanied me to the dealer asked me later what the next, higher, more expensive watch could be that I´d prefer to the Speedy. I thought about it for a while and realized I couldn´t name one. After following watch content on KZbin for 6 years I still can´t think of a watch I want more than the Omega Speedmaster. I guess that´s what you can call a worthwhile acquisition.

I have to say, the Speedmaster is truly an icon in the watch world, as well as in my book, but not because it was the first watch on the moon, but because of its timeless design. There’s many watches from previous eras that will make me think 50s, 60s, 70s etc immediately as soon as I see them. The Speedmaster doesn’t do that for me. Every time I see one of those I just think, what a really nice watch! It’s design is absolutely timeless in my opinion and it will withstand the proverbial tooth of time gnawing on it for quite some time to come. Ok that’s enough sentimental bla bla bla for today!

I want a Speedy and hopefully during 2024 I'll finally add one to my collection. I save $500 each month for my next watch and the temptation is to buy something less expensive for instant gratification. I am determined to resist that impulse this time and by a Speedy with the Saphire crystal. Having said that, I thought that this was a beautiful video and I loved every second of it. Thank you for a really enjoyable video.

22 years ago I had a little money saved. I wanted a nice watch & decided upon an Omega. It wwas between the Seamaster 300 or Speedmaster. I visited Fortunoff on Westbury L.I. the only Omega dealer on L.I. I decided on the Speedy Reduced because of my smaller wrist. It was $1000.00 aat the time. I wore that watch all the time & after a few years one of the pushers broke & there were marks on the hazelite. It spent most of the last 5 years in my watch box on the dresser. I recently decided to bring the watch to a local watch maker. He quoted 700.00 for complete refurbishment. I told him I only paid a grand for the watch he informed me that after servicing my speedy would be worth around 1800.00! Time for the service was 4-6 weeks. So now the Speedmaster is at the shop & I can't wait to get to wear it again.

I have been basically one watch man since purchasing my hesalite as new speedy in 2015. My favorite feature by far of the watch is the case back. Every once in a while I take my speedy off my wrist just to check out the case back and remind myself what doing things properly can really mean. I work in quality and in offshore engineering. I absolutely love my Speedmaster. It was my first Omega and one of the first "serious" watches in my collection, and if I could only keep one, it would be the Speedy quite easily. Yes, Omega pushes the moonwatch story too much. Yes, it might well be over hyped now. And yes, the sheer amount of variants out there do make it a bit less special. But for me, the Hesalite version I own still maintains a classic, understated yet beautiful presence on the wrist and though its been said a million times already, is an absolute strap monster. From wearing it casually on the bracelet, roughing it up on a Nato or on a gorgeous leather strap with deployant clasp to a wedding, the Speedy has done it all effortlessly. The watch is not without criticism ofcourse, but to me, they simply dont matter. Great video though TGV. Interestingly Ive never seen that Hipster association here in the UK. Personally think youre far more likely to see a Hipster wearing some micro brand than the same brand of watch James Bond wears 🤷

One very underrated but incredibly important feature of the Speedmaster is that it is a top of the line luxury watch that wears it's scratches, dings and patina well. A Rolex Datejust becomes tarnished and somehow reduced when that inevitable wear comes, but even more than the Submariner and Explorer, the Speedmaster gets better with age like a good leather jacket or pair of jeans. It's the only high end luxury watch I could wear while not in a constant state of fear.

I'm primarily a Seamaster guy but several years ago thought I should add a Speedy to the family. I went with a 40mm racing, cal. 3330, which fit my wrist and pocketbook better than did it's larger and more expensive siblings. Very nice watch, great looking and accurate. Unfortunately, it is no longer in the Omega catalog. I also bought a "MoonSwatch". It's a novelty and one of my few watch regrets but does a good job of timing my barbequing. On another Omega note, I've heard your praise of the historic 30t2 movement and recently acquired a nice example of Ref.2179. Thank you for the entertainment and information! I've done a great deal of video production and know that what you do is not easy.

After more of 10 years drooling over an speedmaster I finally got one and let me tell you it’s all i dreamt of. I’ve only seen one in real life (not counting in omega boutiques) in a ski chalet in Switzerland and it was stunning. Since that day when I was like 17 I was sure it was going to be my first luxury watch. My family has some rolexes and honestly the quality and craftmanship is the same if not better. And let not even get into the history behind the watch. If you want one you should definitely get them even though they are “mainstream”, who cares, its YOUR watch, no one’s else. Great video as always TGV and as a cellist I extra approve the use of the first suite’s minuet 2 in the soundtrack🎉🎉🎉

I’m quite new to the watch game but the speedy has already been in the back of my mind for many years… after considering many months before buying my first true chrono, it came down between the speedy and the Zenith Chronomaster sport (sorry Rolex, Daytonas are unattainable now)… on paper, the chronomaster was very appealing to me with its heritage, its less mainstream status and the colorful subdials… but then I’ve decided to try them both and MAN, Oh MAN… the Speedy 3861 blew me away… on my wrist it just looks so so beautiful… I’m wearing proudly my sapphire sandwich now watching this awesome video and couldn’t be happier

How does its historical significance stand against other great space events? - Like the first watch ever to space - Pobeda 34-K. (Soviet Russia.) - The first human to space and greatest happening about space, Jurij Gagarin - wearing a Sturmanskie watch. (Soviet Russia.) - The first woman in space, wearing a Sturmanskie watch. (Soviet Russia.) - The first human in outer space, wearing the amazing Strela chronograph. (Soviet Russia.) - Etc.. Lots of Soviet records happening long before the moon landing, of course. (Also continued after..) Most important here; thanks for your very good, informative and enjoyable videos! 😊🙏

Much better than the rival Schleich version, and in the UK he can be picked up second hand for anything from £12 to £25. A brilliant tribute to the Speedy. I've never owned one, but I do have the Cal. 3330 movement in my Seamaster chronograph, and my wife's new 38mm Speedmaster reduced also has the same 3330 with the same 10 o'clock pusher to change the 6 o'clock date. On my Seamaster that's incorporated into the centre of the He escape valve. It's really clever how they've achieved that. "The American" is a brilliant film. I saw it when it came out and you mentioned it a few months ago and I rewatched it then. Very stylish.

After throwing my defunct Speedy Reduced in the trash in 2007, I bought a Seiko, wore that for 5 years in a row before considering another Citizen. I still have the Seiko, but the Reduced couldn't stand the things I did with it. It had stopped on me three times (shattered crystal during sports, once stopped running and needed service, stopped running again and got trashed after 5 years of ownership). Naturally, I didn't have much love for either Omega or the Speedy when I started collecting watches in earnest around 2015, right when I discovered your channel. Since then I've learnt a lot more. The OG Speedmaster Professional is a cool watch, but as you so rightfully point out, I wouldn't buy one for 7000 Euros. Mine would indeed be a Hanhart 417 ES 1954 if I had to get a black chronograph. Either the original black one, or the reverse panda flyback one. It's still a wee grail for me. That said, nothing against a speedy, these days. They are cracking watches, even if they are over-marketed.

I bought the Saphire Sandwich because it is the most unique of the line and I love it. The bracelet is beautiful and wears well although I would have prefered a larger adjustment mechanism in the clasp. it is currently my go to everyday and I've noticed that even though it's 42mm, it doesnt wear big on my average sized wrist. To many that might be a plus but a slight negative for me.

I had never seen The American so I sat down this weekend and watched it after your mention here. What a stellar film, right up my alley. Was not expecting to enjoy it that much, the slow pacing and "unspoken dialogue" in every scene was so refreshing in an era of constant cuts and over-explained plots. The "vibe" was very Blade Runner, albeit in an entirely different setting. Similar story arc in many ways. Do you have any other recommendations like this? I trust your judgement now =)

Hi TGV Yes, the original Moon Watch is the King - never mind all the special editions. I can accept genuine upgrades such as the coaxial escapement watches, but not all of the Black Side Of The Moon, Grey Side Of The Moon, Sideways Side Of The Moon and all that. Speedmasters has become a whole independent industry for Omega. It’s a business so who can blame them - but it probably will undermine the icon in the long run. Or will it? Still, the original Speedmaster is a true classic. I’ve only have a Speedy Reduced. You’ll see it in my upcoming collection video coming up soon😊 Keep up the good work👍

I fly from América to london twice a year, and I always go into the Rolex boutique in heathrow. Always ask to try on the Rolex submariner, and I take off my 1861 to do so. I can say the only thing that I like more is the name. And this is because I've seen it so much more. But when I put that Rolex on, i just want my Speedy back on my wrist even though it's slightly banged up and has a 1cm crack in the hesalite edge from a drop. I've had it 3 years now from new and I try my Dad's Rolex GMT master bi colour on sometimes, but I can't get over how darn sweet the Speedy looks. And the hesalite in certain lighting makes it look irresistible. I have yet to try on a Rolex Daytona because that is still a watch that could replace the Speedy for me, in my mind anyway. Whenever I think about a new watch to replace my 1861, I just think about the 3861. 😂 or just to have a new watch. Keep both 😂

I did like it much more in person, but it had no staying power and I found the winding action quite poor on the 3861. It certainly is an icon just doesn't have a place in my collection

My 3861 Speedy is my third Omega. My first one was the Seamaster 2254 with the sword hands and before the co-axial movements became standard. I've had it for 21 years and, never having been serviced, it runs at approximately 1to 1.5 seconds fast a day. I grew up in the US space program era from Al Shepard's Mercury mission in 1961 to the Gemini missions and then the Apollo missions until their end in 1972. That always attracted me to the Speedmasters so my second Omega, in 2006, was a pre-owned, Speedy "Sapphire Sandwich" with the 1863 movement. It was a beautiful watch but the lack of hacking made time setting an adventure and it always ran per day to the very edge of its accuracy rating. Earlier this year I sold it and got the newest Speedy with the amazing 3861 Master Co-axial movement. At last, a Speedy that hacks and a movement that consistently runs at +1 second per day. It's damn near a perfect watch for this ageing child of the space race days.

I love the classic speedmaster for sure, no doubt. As an enthusiast, I think it's over rated right now. I am an engineer by trade and have connections to the space industry. One of my daily watches that is always under the radar is my older Omega Speedmaster X-33. Such a cool watch, very similar to the functions of the quartz Casios and others that have visited space.

A most excellent video with superb presentation! As a master 3861 owner the points you mentioned regarding its aesthetics and its historic importance were bang on and enlightening. I'd love it if you could in the future include the original watch straps made by Forstener of which the astronauts used instead of the original Omega straps ! Forstener still exist, my 3861 came with the sail cloth strap so l bought the Forstener Presidential bracelet and it's cost under £200 , the Omega latest is £900 plus ! Great video TGV keep em comming 😊

I have a Speedy Pro with the 1861 non-hacking movement. The question I have to ask myself is if I wanted to upgrade to the 3861. For now, I’d say the answer is no. Part of it is definitely the price of a new one, but I also have to admit to myself that there’s a certain charm of using a watch that gives me an approximation of the exact time (within 1 minute over a period of several days) but allows me to keep appointments on time, plus I like the snap and duration of the chronograph movement (I sometimes time bicycle rides with this which can take me more than an hour). And yes, I admit I’m a NASA nerd so I like the NASA connection story. But I also like that the flight qualification and the Silver Snoopy award were endorsements unpaid for and unlooked for by Omega. These days it’s very rare to see a product endorsement based on accomplishment and not by transaction. The James Bond Seamaster connection is an endorsement by transaction, in comparison.

Another top shelf video TGV. At home with the flu so this lifted me up better than a paracetamol! 😊. I would still put my Speedy on top with that survey despite fooling myself into getting the Mission to Uranus. I still feel a bit embarrassed. In my defence I liked the colour and you may remember that I took a leap and got the stainless steel and sapphire version with Seiko mecaquartz on Ali Express and it's running perfectly! I get a better kick out of it even, scratched my itch for the blue and white summer feeling on the beach and doesn't stain my wrist blue. It took me a long time to forgive Omega for that travesty but I got over it. To top it all, you mention the Mission Impossible Casio DW-290 1VS that I'm wearing right now. The most perfect video yet! 👌😉

I love the Speedie and for me IMHO, is the BEST WATCH EVER MADE, and I had possessed many chronographs from many brands since 1970, near 1000!!!!. I once had a collection of 19 Speedies ranging from the Ref 145.012, to the 176.014 Speedie Mark 4.5 Automatic, to an X-33, to the Holy Grail 376.0822 with Cal. 1045. My only problem is that Omega could had increase the water resistance from 50 meters to eventually 200 or 300 meters and didn't. After all, this watch was subjected to possible deep water immersion each time a Space mission was coming back to earth. And also increase the winding from 40 hours to 55 or 60 hours at least, and with all Omega expertise, an Automatic Chrono movement with a Microrotor, or a peripheral rotor and a vertical clutch. But I guess all these changes would had made a different instrument from the Original. But now what I have is an Omega Racing model with the Co-Axial movement Cal 3303, hoping to get the 3861 Sandwich soon!!!!

Amazing video. Your videos are on another much higher level. Keep it up. I have few Rolex watches and a Speedy FOIS since 8 years. I would never sell my Speedy since its so versatile, usable and it just works. But you are absolutely right there are too many variations which diminishes its importance. What is your grail watch that you referred?

Perhaps an unfair quibble, but it is also true that the Speedmaster lays claim to what is likely the most infamous failure in horological history, with Dave Scott replacing it with a Bulova after the crystal popped out in the middle of an EVA on the moon.

Excellent Video. Totally loved the Hugo intro of course, as well as the whole video. I guess for me, apart from the somewhat excessive cost, my pet peeve would be the waterproofness (or rather, lack thereof) of this piece. Surely with today's technology Omega could get 100 metres water resistance without compromising the design!

Agree 100%. The lack of water resistance is the ONLY thing that has kept me from buying one. If it had 200m water resistance I'd have bought one years ago.

Thank you for another wonderful video! You made an excellent point about the Apollo era being a time of optimism. I remember we were going to build a space station and then a moonbase within the next few years. We had the space shuttle under construction and Skylab in orbit. Unfortunately, things didn't work out as planned, but I do like this era for the promise that it held. Maybe someday.

I always enjoy a discussion about the Speedmaster having owned one since 1966. Chronographs have always intrigued me although I hardly ever use the function other than to time traffic lights. I wanted a Daytona for a while but got put off by the price and non-availability. I ended up buying a Zenith deLuca when I found its El Primero movement was being slowed down and used by Rolex. I finally satisfied my need with a Tudor chronograph housed in a Rolex case. Hmmm, maybe I should put the el Primero movement in the Tudor’s case? My Speedmaster is not of the moon watch generation being of straight lugs and using the 321 movement. I’ve been led to believe it’s worth more but alas, I’m not selling it. Maybe I could get it reviewed on the urban gentry. Who knows, I’ll continue to wear it sparingly and dream of past days of peace and prosperity.

First off, let me say I’ve owned the hand wound, hesalite model for 17 years, and am a big fan and I really enjoyed this summary. I was very curious to hear what your four gripes were, and interestingly enough, none of them were, strictly speaking, related to the Speedy as such: wrong people like it, it’s too pricey, it hasn’t been to space enough and there’s just to many models of it. I agree with all four points, but I cannot see how they have anything to do with the watch itself. Anyway, keep jt up, T, and oh - The American is superb 👍

Your videos have a fantastic level of production. Every time I see an upload, I sit down and enjoy each one. Hugo running out of caviar, either on earth or space, is a matter of upmost urgency! As for the watch, great points were made in the video. There are people who, I perceive, only buy the Speedmaster as a status object without knowledge of the history, therefore this is something that has diminished my interest in the watch. If I was a space aficionado, would probably go for the Bulova Lunar Pilot, more discreet and connoisseurs know the history. Plus the silver-tone dial is stunning.

Brilliant story telling! Am with you, sorely tempted, but way too much money. Bought my Heurer CS3111 when it was released in ‘96 for NLG 4400, €2000, sadly lost it 10 years later. I felt that was crazy money then. Guess I’d seen nothing yet. Bloody internet and social. Just as much to blame as ultra low interest rates, if not more, for today’s ridiculous prices for all things fun. Wearing my beautiful Seiko every day without worry, and that’s a priceless feeling.

This is my favorite Speedy review. Thanks, Tristano. I do find the all the special editions of the watch a bit annoying. Just keep it standard for the purists and have the more luxe versions with the sapphire, open caseback etc. for the greater majority. That's all the Speedy needs to be.

It's still the speedy for me. I've had the opportunity and means in the past to get one but never pulled the trigger. Now having been lucky enough to have kids in middle age I think that the opportunity has probably passed me by. I'm very comfortable with that and I would have to come into A LOT of money now to divert it onto a £6k watch; priorities change. I do love my Tissots and my Hamilton, but it will always be the one that got away for me.

On many occasions I have 'almost' bought an Omega SpeedMaster. I think the design is classic ,and so on and so forth, while not caring at all for the heritage. However, I have had poor experiences from other Omega watches (Seamasters), so I have stuck with my Rollies. I doubt I will ever fork out the funds for an Omega watch.

Great video, as always TGV :) the comments will be interesting, as any discussion of the Speedmaster is always greeting with passion, which is a great thing. How many other watches ignite a heated discussion quicker than the Speedy? I love the Speedmaster. Have a I owned one, no. Will I own one, yes, at some point I think so, I just need to find the right occasion. Its an all time classic and should be seen and treated as such. Granted, its not for everyone and I don't get caught up in all the BS detail and snobbery surrounding the watch, I just like and enjoy it for what it is: a faithful reproduction of a bygone era. Its one of the last remaining watches out there that actually makes me feel something. Here's a question: Will Omega bring back the Speedy reduced, in-light of watch sizes starting to shrink again?

Superb video, and history aside, it's just a very classy looking watch. It's also a monster strap hacker, looking good in multiple configurations. I have mine on a black crocodile strap, makes it look smart. There is nothing to dislike, and yes, prices have crept up, but that can be said of many watch brands. Couldn't agree more about special editions, one every week is too much.

First ‘luxury watch’ I bought in 2015 when I started collecting, at a significant discount due to working at a Jewellers at the time; at times it’s been there for sentimentality over wrist time, but I could never sell it! Plus I don’t think I have anything that I can pair with so many straps.

A manual wind watch is a no-go for me. I would only buy an automatic (unless it's some vintage watch that I'm only going to wear on rare occasions). Unfortunately, Omega seems to have stopped making self-winding chronographs with the traditional three registers/sub-dials.

Wow .. Your final word (19:45) touched me. I'm born in 1982. The space shuttles program was the proud successor of now legendary NASA's Mercury/Gemini/Apollo programs. Everything was possible, what a time to be alive. Fast forward 2023. The "faith in the future" flame's has not died .. but is very dim indeed. The new Speedmaster was a gift from me to me for my 40th birthday. I believe the ideal the watch represents far exceeds the object itself. That's what makes the Speedy special in my opinion. When I have a rough day, a quick look at my Speedy .. i'm 10 years old again, eyes on the stars, dreaming everything is possible. I can't wait to watch Artemis 3 (wich is the twin sister of Apollo) land on the Moon, just to catch a glimse of that magic with my son :)
