The reason this song is so beautiful, is because it represents that Mary Poppins job is done and the family is now fixed and they don't need her anymore. It's both beauty of and tragic. This story was never about Mary Poppins, it was always about George Banks. What Mary Poppins was there to show him is that, his no no-nonsense, strict father type dosn't work. His children just needed a loving father, and once Geroge learned that. Mary Poppins was free to leave. It a glorious show of triumph of the human spirt and how the little things in life such as "feeding the birds" or "flying a kite" is what makes life worth while.

I heard a story about David Tomlinson. That he was at lunch in a diner one day and a little girl asked him if he could sing "Fly a Kite." David, in his 70s at this point and without missing a beat, jumped up and began to sing and dance just like this scene here. He was applauded with a standing ovation. This reminds me of when I was in 4th grade, and the movie had just come out. It seemed like everyone was crazy about it -a huge fad! I loved it, too. The kids at school would just start singing tunes from the movie, in the middle of class. And the teacher took us to the theater to see it. Feed the Birds always had a kind-of transcendental effect on me. I think that song took on a profound life of its own, more than Disney had imagined. It has a way of pulling us out of body, watching that scene floating above St. Paul's, and taking us back to a past life when the spirit of giving and spiritual experience were so profound.

I have seen Saving Mr. Banks twice now, and yet, I have never seen Mary Poppins except for a few clips, as a kid, I grew up ,with Little Mermaid, Aladidn, Lion King, Hunchack, etc.. and saw Snow White, Pinnocio, Bambi, Peter Pan, Fox and Hound, but I think as a kid, I didn't have anything interest in live action movies, except for the action ones of the 1990s, but after seeing Saving Mr Banks, and nw at the age of 25, it makes me want to watch the original movie, though I can't seem to find it anymore

FreakDaMIghet Yes, but what a legacy she left us. And not just the musical roles, like Mary Poppins or Maria Von Trappe; she had plenty of pizzazz as the voice of Shrek's Queen-Mother-In-Law and Gru's mom.

she's also one of the late mr disney's favorites as well. When he approached her PERSONALLY to ask her to play mary poppins, she had to tun him down because she was pregnant. WALT DISNEY said to her "its okay, I'll wait" when WALT FREAKIN DISNEY waits on you, you know there are no pants to hold your amazing iron plated balls!!
@missrrjohnson984610 жыл бұрын
John David Tibbetts Wow. I hadn't heard that. What I had heard was that she (Julie) was being considered for My Fair Lady, since she had played Eliza Higgins on Broadway, but the director decided on Audrey Hepburn instead, which left Julie available for Mary Poppins. Apparently, when Julie won the Golden Globe for Best Actress fpr Mary Poppins, she thanked the director of My Fair Lady for NOT hiring her for the part of Eliza. (I know that's true, I've seen the clip on KZbin.) She was definitely a gutsy lady!

People get such a sense of superiority about movies. If Saving Mr Banks brings a new audience to Mary Poppins, then I'm glad more people get to enjoy it. For me personally, it reminded me how much I loved this movie and made me want to watch it again immediately. So just shut up about how you're better than other people because you already liked this movie before that movie came out, nobody gives a fuck.
