As a kid, I just thought they were plain old punishing Mr. Banks by destroying his things, but years later I learned it was specifically supposed to resemble military cashiering to show us how seriously this bank took itself and what a stuffy, regimented life he was stuck in.

Yup. It was a thing in the British Army, especially with officers. When you joined up, you would pay in a good sum of money as a promise of good behaviour. If you served your terms and were dismissed in good standing, it would be returned to you at the end of your tour of duty. If you were dismissed from the military in disgrace, however, the sum would be kept. You would be 'cashiered'... not only would you lose your job and your pension but also a tidy sum of personal capital as well. Cashiering someone in disgrace soon evolved into a humiliation ritual in which the entire regiment would be brought to parade grounds and the disgraced officer would, in front of them all, have their tokens of rank broken, all ornamentation and rank insignia physically torn from their uniform, thier regimental patches likewise ripped away, and then forced to march through all their fellows and out of the military camp in this tattered wreck of a uniform to show everyone their disgrace visibly.

She came to save them all. Remember what Bert said. At least in his own words... Cherish your children because before you know it, they've grown and flown. If you get too passionate about your job, you can lose the other most important thing in your life... Your Family. The writer Thomas Carlyle found that lesson out the hard way, and it haunted him for the rest of his life. Mary Poppins came to reconnect the children with their parents and their parents to them. She knew that children should be raised (at least wherever possible) by their parents. Thats the whole point of being a parent. Your children are not there as status symbols or testaments to days where little or no contraception existed. As with all things, there must be balance. Passionately striving for the good of your country's economy and supporting equal rights causes is brilliant. But so, too, is raising your children in love and confidence, so they grow up with no regrets and you move into older years knowing you did all you could.

I can sympathize with Mr. Banks. I gave 5 years of my life into the call center as Workforce Management, and just like that in 2019 I was discharged (or laid off to be specific) on economic reasons not by company violation without notice. I'm still shocked at how the bank administrators handled this. The elder Mr. Dawes simply could have said: "Banks? You're FIRED!!!!!!!" on the spot. Even as a kid, I learned about being fired from positions, and even back then, I was shocked at how easily they let Mr. Banks get discharged. Really, they could have simply said Mr. Banks was fired. Even Mr. Dawes Junior shook his head sadly when his father told him to "get on with it," when his son was told of him what to do. Even on the telephone, Mr. Dawes Senior said "we regret this course of action," with his son repeating it. This discharge could have gone much worse.

It’s weird now to see Dick Van Dyke play this very elderly man from 1964, and now in 2024 (about a week ago from the time of this comment) he just celebrated his 99th birthday and is still kickin’! He’s not at all like this crippling old man he portrays here. He is still a song and dance man! God bless him.

He was the main villain of the film. It was difficult for me to feel sad for him when he died. He should have kept his hands to himself instead of being greedy by snatching Michael's tuppence and causing Michael to get upset (which resulted in the run on the bank happening). To another side, I suppose I can understand how depressing it might be for other viewers, but hey, at least he died happily. Heck, even Mr. Dawes, Jr. was happy to know that his dad died happily. Better to die happily than to die sadly.

@@marvinthemaniac7698 actually The Great Depression had global effects due to imports/exports ect, this Wikipedia article is of the effects in Great Britain alone (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Depression_in_the_United_Kingdom) but as it says the UK felt it less than some other countries as the economy had grown less in the 20s in part (because it was not floating on artificially propped up loans (like the US which caused the Great Depression)) so it had a shorter distance to crash but still.

Great Britain’s shipping industry was hit hard by the Great Depression. Especially in Clydebank. There was no more ships to manufacture because no more orders were coming in so everyone was laid off and the shipyard closed for a few years until they had the money to resume operations. Jarrow was in a similar spot at the time. Large amounts of people were left without work through the first half of the 1930s. The workforce was not able to largely go back to work in some towns until around 1935.

This scene is very well directed. Mr Banks knows he is in a lot of trouble and knows he is gonna get fired for indirectly causing a run in the bank from acting awkwardly to being nervous. The scene being eerily silent also builds up the atmosphere as well with there being awkward silence amongst the board of directors. And it's implied Mr Dawes jnr was forced to act on the board's behalf by his father who pressures him to do so and Mr Dawes jnr is obviously too afraid to stand up to his father implying that Mr Dawes snr despite looking like a frail old man is actually a very merciless man similar to Palpaltine of Star Wars.
