I worked for a GC through summers in college. What I learned is that every project is like this. People make mistakes, things aren't perfect. The skill comes in the knowledge of how to overcome those issues and fix mistakes and how to be creative. I love how real this is showing the steps and going through the process. It's not always pretty getting from point A to B, but the finished product never shows the anguish!

Hey Jeff, you mention new on the market, but this whole arrangement is VERY similar to a setup you've been able to buy from Schluter for years. As in, they sell a thick structural foam to go underneath their pans, and a drain that makes an immediate 90 to jump across the subfloor surface. I had to do a VERY similar installation (minus the linear drain) because of joist locations and where I could cut. Which is all to say... going to bet this is way $$ cheaper. As a 1st timer bathroom remodeler, it was super easy to use in all the same ways you are doing here. Waterproof, strong as wood, and easy to cut. That structural foam stuff in a shower is MAGIC!

I like the whole drain system idea. Since I have a basement shower, it would probably be a nice way to give me the option to move the drain without having to dig out ancient concrete. Though I think even with the way this foam board works, I think I'd still rather have a prefab pan so I wouldn't forever second guess the waterproofing.

Plumbing Engineer here; the dye in the primer or prime+solvent is there so we can confirm during our site inspection punchlists that the joints were in fact primed. If there is a pipe failure, again the dye allows you to know if the joint failed due to design error, or installation error i.e. who's insurance is footing the bill.

Love the look of linear drains . I just had one installed in my shower only problem with them is if you do t clean the little drain every two weeks it will clog up easy
@Visionist
@Visionist 11 ай бұрын
Depends on the brand. Some of them have flawed design - too many metal feet with sharp corners for the drain insert, which easily catches hairs and other debris. I bought and installed mine in EU from a reputable brand and never had any issues with clogging. Also, you shouldn't use 1.5" drain pipe for shower. Not over here anyway.

Im not a plumber but have done alot of plumbing to know you never glue together a fitting without holding it for atleast a few seconds or it pushes apart a little when you let go of it, and the first fitting you glued onto the new drain made me cringe when i saw it and all fittings after that were still bad but first one you didnt hold at all and i knkw first hand if you dont hold em they all push apart, just varies how much they push apart, not worth the risk to rush through a few extra seconds of only a few fittings to do. Honestly if you told me you never had one leak, i wouldnt beleive you for a second, with that technique youve definitely had some leak, and that in of itself, should of made you learn your lesson

There are numerous systems out there that are very similar to this one. Thick two inch foam that can be utilized are a structural component, for example schluter makes one. If you accidently cut the already applied waterproofing at the factory it can be waterproofed over the cut again so it wont be garbage.

Great system, but when you measure for the bench height of 17”, did you take the 5” floor into account? I don’t remember hearing you say that.

Jeff, I'm confused. I don't think I saw any sloping done on the floor. Will there be a part 2 on this shower?

“704.1 Slope of horizontal drainage piping… the slope of the piping shall be not less than 1/4 inch per foot (2-percent slope).” No wonder you don’t want to pull a permit.

I have no knowledge of ABS plastic. I didn't know it also needed ABS glue. I have worked with CPVC though, but that was back in the mid 80's when I re-piped the family's house.

Interesting system. I'm curious to see how it ends up and holds up. Looks like it has potential. Can thinset be used to fill voids like that without issue (like around the plumbing, crevices, etc)?

Great video! Can you describe how you establish the floor slope from the bench to the drain - is the Oatey Quick Drain pre-sloped?
