You are such a wonderful teacher! I picked up Cantonese by watching too much TVB drama back in the days. And I always wonder since Monday and Sunday sounds the same, how can I differentiate it by listening, in the end I will just follow up the topic of conversation since the beginning 😊. Now I am living in a country where no one speaks Cantonese, so listening to your lesson definitely saves me from losing my Cantonese.

Hi Sue, another very instructive video, I love your channel! The way you explain Cantonese from an English speaker's point of view (ie. common mistakes, how sentence structure is different) is SO HELPFUL, especially for someone like who comes from a Cantonese speaking Chinese/Vietnamese family but I was born in England so our generation can't speak it very well... but I'm learning a lot from your channel! I will recommend it to my siblings :D Thank you again, keep up the great work!

OH my gosh!! How am I only seeing this now? I'm so sorry for the late reply! It's funny you picked up on that because the word for "free" (in the sense of not doing anything ... having free time) and "walk" do sound similar, but luckily, you'll never say "I can't walk" in the same way you say "I don't have free time". I'll have to continue my reply when I get home to my Mac because I can't write the tones on here at work. Stay tuned :-)

Hi again ... so you're comment has me thinking I could do a whole video on the use of the "dāk" (which means basically "OK") because it's used in different ways ... like the "m dāk hàahn" (唔得閒) (busy or not free) has the "dāk" in front of the "hàahn" ... but if you wanted to say "cannot walk" (say, for example, you're not OK to go out of the house yet or you're at a stoplight and the light is still red so it's not OK to walk ) then it would be "m hàahng dāk" (唔行得) with the dāk after the verb. So you can see from the spelling that hàahn and hàahng are different words and that the placement of the dāk is different. While I'm on the subject, I might add that there is also "hàahng m dou/dóu" (行唔到) meaning you can't complete the action of walking, so like something is wrong with your legs and you can't walk, or something is preventing you from completing the action of walking. There's more I could go on about, but I'll stop there since I know you didn't really ask about the "dāk" 😂 But anyway, I hope this helps and wasn't too confusing! :)

I’ve never heard the “ sing keih” word for week. We only used “laih baai “, so I must have learned “old” Chinese. If I was in Hong Kong, would I still hear the “ old “ Chinese? I learned Chinese from my parents and grandparents and obviously, they were old and from “old” China.😊

I would say yes, most definitely you would still hear and can use the "old" style ... but you'll hear the "new" one a lot more ... and it's so interesting that you've never heard it before. :) Thanks so much for commenting ... how wonderful to have learned from your parents and grandparents -- they are, after all, the best teachers in life!

I don't have any background in Chinese poetry, so thanks for sharing that. But I do remember learning 昨日 (jok yaht) and 昨天 (jok tīn) as the written form with Chinese U (Cantonese) character readers back in the day :)

Another example: 人生若只如初[見]，何事秋風悲畫[扇]？ 等閑變卻故人心，卻道故人心易[變]！ jyutping: g[in] s[in] b[in] pinyin: j[ian] sh[an] b[ian] So I think most ancient poetry in Chinese is not originally design for Mandarin. And there is another big mistake to call Simplify Chinese as Simplify Chinese. As you can imagine, when you try to design a character for something. For example, I may just use a circle to stand for the Sun, the Moon or even an Egg. You have to add something to the character to make it more complex to express more meanings. So, logically, CHS must exist before CHT. And that is not simplify but an older version of Chinese. Hope you can understand what I want to express :) 我啲洋文嘛嘛哋 - -||

Mandarin Chinese is my mother tongue, and that's just the way it is😀. Sunday is 星期日 ('sing keih yaht'), or 星期天 in Chinese. It helps me learn Cantonese since there are some common rules or expressions with Chinese.

HI Kelly, That's a great one! Raise the flag ... (升旗) is the same pronunciation as week (星期) -- different characters, but both share the same pronunciation: "sìng kèih". So I suppose we could ask the question: "sìng kèih géi sìng kèih a?" :-)
