Here in Nigeria, we are so diverse in our cultures. Many cultures and languages. English Language is our official language. But we don't joke with that "Nigerian pidgin" 🥹🤧. No matter your status in life in Nigeria, we use it as a means to catch cruise. It brings us together in communication. But the pidgin is not used in official (formal) matters here. It sounds so cool in Nigerian music because our artists use it a lot, combining it with English, Yoruba and other Nigerian languages.

Pidgin is actually easy to learn for people that already speak English because it has its base in english. Another advantage of learning pidgin is that it is used to communicate in all english-speaking West African countries (Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Liberia and the Gambia) not just Nigeria alone. Although, each country's pidgin has its own twist, you'll still easily understand if u know pidgin. Nigeria's pidgin is like the general / most popular one. If u listen to afrobeats songs a lot, you'll notice that most of the words are usually in pidgin.

Where you dey = where are you Who dey there = who is there Easy adjectives and conjunction Wetin = what Sabi = know Nor = don't Shebi = thought (mostly used at the beginning of question you are not sure of. E.g, shebi, you love your life . I thought you loved your life Na = it's ( can also aid many complete pidgin sentences. E.g, Na me dey talk = its me talking. On the other hand, leave me Na, simply means leave me. The Na is just saving as an aid to complete the sentence, not literally as it's in that case. Nor = don't Una = you ( plural form) go = will ( it can be attached to the English Go, e.g. I go Go mean I will Go. Note: there are no future tense or past tense conditions in pidgin. If someone rolls their eyes and says, “Abegi!” they are saying “Puh-leazzzz!” Which is a stronger variant than ‘abeg’ (please). So, the “i” at the end is like ‘disgusted’ emphasis. E.g. if a friend whom you know is 40 years old posts on social media that she is having their 30th birthday party, you say, “Abegi! She is 30 years old forever!” We add a vowel at the end for emphasis. Say, your parents have been prompting you to go and study but you’ve been chatting on the phone, after the 2nd or 3rd time they might get in your face and say, “Go and read your booku!” (Go and read your books, for the hundredth time).The ‘o,’ ‘u’ or ‘i’ at the end of a word is for emphasis. And I think many Africans do it, not just West Africans. ‘How far?” Is not pronounced as it is in English. It sounds like ‘Ah fah!’ So, don’t be posh and sound the ‘w’ and ‘r!’
@AMOE_30 Жыл бұрын
And the meaning of ‘abi’ varies with the context. In addition to ‘isn’t it,’ or ‘right?’ it could mean ‘or.’ For example, ‘You want rice, abi beans?’ Meaning, ‘Do you want rice or beans?’ Or in an altercation, ‘Abi, you dey crase?’ Meaning, ‘Or are you mad?!’

And it’s where we get the phrases ‘over sabi’ or ‘sabi sabi’ which mean ‘know too much.’ For example, ‘No go do over sabi der o!’ (Don’t go and be a know-it-all there). ‘You too sabi’ means you know too much (for your own good). ‘You sabi book’ means you are academically clever. If journalists are asking around and you don’t want any part of their questioning, you might reply, ‘Abeg, I no know book o!’ Meaning, ‘Please, I don’t know anything/I’m not educated and don’t understand you educated people’s matters’ in a self-deprecating way.

The "oooo!" at the end of a sentence is an exclamation for emphasis. The equivalent in English might be in one use of the word "now". For example: "That colour is blue, now!" "Don't do that to me, now!" "My people, now!" The tone with which you pronounce the "now!" is exactly like how you pronounce the "oooo!". Come to think of it I have heard Nigerians use "now!" I wan chop is even outdated now... We rather say "I wan chaw" now Abeg can also mean do not disturb me especially when its repeated twice as a response... E.G: Q: "Can you help me do something" A: Abeg Abeg (meaning do not disturb me)
