The n theme kind of makes sense since it kind of tells the listener “this person might not be safe and trusting him might end badly” which kind of makes sense since he’s basically kind of helping his dad steal all the pokemon which at first sounds interesting (since they advertised it as “liberating” the pokemon) but then you realize that it might not be very safe.

imo: s: hugh a: gladion, hau, bianca/cheren b: n, barry, brendan/may c: blue, silver, wally, d: all the gen 6 rivals gen 1 and 2 music hasn't held up over the years to me. all the battle tracks sound very similar to each other and lack the flair and characteristics that the newer ones show. also of the swsh rival themes, hop's is ok (a bit too laid back though) and marnie's sounds like a tamer gladion's theme. bede's theme on the other hand is amazing

S - Silver, N A - Gladion, Wally, Hugh B - Cheren/Bianca, Barry, Brendan/May, Hau C - XY rivals D - Blue - Silver and N are top tier because their theme is unique to them plus the fact they're not your common type trainer who fight in the "right" way. Silver being a thief and abuser at first is definitely not someone you want to lose against and N's ideals are upsetting enough to make the player doubt their beliefs. Fighting N brings some kind of stress whether you win or lose because you don't want to prove him right. - Gladion, Wally and Hugh are good themes. Unique to them, define them well. I feel like i can actually fight against them. Just sad Wally's theme can be heard only once. - I actually hesitated between A and B for Hau. Good points: the theme is individual and defines well his character. The problem: i don't feel like i'm battling to give my all but rather, just having a casual fight. In other words, i'd feel bad if i were to go all out in a battle where i'm supposed to have fun and not stress. - Barry's theme feels generic. I feel like the theme "doesn't take risks" to go deeper but it's probably because Barry isn't a complex character to begin with. Either way, he's the one of the few in the B tier i can feel the need to be serious battling. Brendan/May feels somehow like it at first but as the journey continues, they get less invested in battling. - XY rivals, the fact the theme is shared between several persons breaks the individuality of the theme making it less unique. Plus, i don't feel the need to fight seriously which is a huge contrast to the word "rival". - Blue not having a rival theme is already a big letdown. But to not ease the task, regular trainers sharing the same theme make it definitely not unique. The theme itself is good but when you're fighting your rival and the theme is the same one than every regular trainer in the region, it kills the little hype the fight had. It's nothing more than a regular battle like any other one.

2 years later and I'm here to say: You can hear Wally's theme again at the Battle Resort. A lady there changes the theme you hear throughout the island, and one of them is Wally's.

Hau's battle theme represents his vibe so perfectly and in addition to gladion's (which is also a total bop in a different direction) it really made sun and moon/usum so fun to me. i hear people complain about hau so often but he wasnt the only rival. gladion was obviously there to fill that role while hau had his own little character arc as he traveled with you. i enjoy gen 7 so much and urgh the music is SO GOOD. And also, gladion always gave me silver vibes and i must say you have a good list here. silver's theme served, even with the restrictions earlier gen compositions had, a fav hands down

Personally I think the stress inducing music fits N perfectly. He’s a nice guy, but he’s a revolutionary and is willing to move mountains and usurp the world to see his dreams to fruition. It’s sort of like Edelgard in the sense that they believe the only way to make the world better is to burn down some of it’s foundations first, hurting countless people in that path, but they’re a normal person at heart with good intentions. Personally, Gladion's theme is my favorite just because I guess my brain finds it more euphoric, which I think is how music works, and to me you can get a lot of his character through the theme. Wally's theme is a close second.

Funny how I have always found both of those themes extremely over hyped lol. Gladion’s theme does capture his character though, the edgyness. But I cant but feel it’s generic ”trying too much to be cool” which makes me cringe a little especially when so many people like it. Wally’s theme on the other hand, I dont really know what people hear in it, because it’s really short theme and repititive, and sort of ”doesn’t go anywhere,” no drops or anything. I grew up on X and Y, they where the first games that I played, the anime was the fist one that came out while I was alive, maybe the black and white anime too, I remember watching it. The games soundtrack for rival battles I remember thinking “this is a rival theme? Sounds like it should be the wild encounter theme”. But then I heard the legendary battle soundtrack, that’s on a whole other level

Wally was always my favorite rival, but his theme used to just be the regular unaltered trainer theme, which was fine but he was more the rival than the actual "rival" Agaiin this was another theme where the first time I ever heard it I screamed and gasped and got emotional cause I was not expecting them to give this kid such a glow up in his battle music tbh plus the reason I see a hint of it fitting is the fact he has Rocky Balboa vibes going on, it's stereotypical movie/ anime training theme music

I feel like Bianca and Cheren's theme fits them well, as they are your friendly rivals. In the same game you have N, your true rival, therefore his theme is more threatening.

Barry's theme is my favorite rival theme, it's fast paced and friendly, like his character. So hyperactive, always running, always 5 steps ahead of you, but he's also kind and a good friend, as well as trying to beat you to be as strong as you/stronger than you, even though he always beats the gyms before you. And he's nice to his and other Pokémon. Diamond was my first main series game, so Barry's theme is the most nostalgic to me and I think it's the best. I was so certain it was gonna get an S. Barry will fine you so hard... Also tbh, while I kinda like Wally's theme, it's only there when you fight him the last time before the Elite Four (as far as I remember, been a while since I beat aS), and I agree that it doesn't REALLY fit his character, and it is a bit repetitive and a short loop. It's nice music leading into a battle/pre-battle and showing Wally's determination, but as the battle theme itself... could be better. I do like to change the music on the battle island to Wally's theme while I bike around on the beach though, I think it goes well there XD

I was thinking more in terms of grunts themes (mostly because i absolutely love the hgss rocket theme and would just sit there not using the last move needed to beat them just so i could listen to it longer) but bosses works as well i guess 😂
