My first bow was a Bear Grizzly recurve purchased in 1974. Took my first deer (4 pt.) with it in 1975 using a Bear Razorhead broadhead. Upgraded to a Bear Grizzly II compound after the recurve. Fred Bear was the man when it came to archery. I can see it now....."Death by Bearry"! Another good video Rich! "All hail Bunjie and Bunjie Jr."

I finished my 2nd deer season with my Bear X Saga 405 Crossbow. This is the first crossbow i've ever owned and it has gotten me into this game. All the crossbow knowledge I have picked up from your videos has in turn been applied to this crossbow. I'm very happy with it. My son took his first doe with it. Total cost was about 250.00 from my local Academy.

Nice to see the videos flowing, when it comes to kinetic energy I found that all you need is about 70 to get the job done. It makes sense when for years people were taking large game with some very undeveloped bows and arrows. As for the traditional bows today I find them to be a work of art and I will own one someday, even if it's just to hang on the wall.

I grabbed the Bear Saga 405 during the deer hunting season (I'm a farmer so most is harvest season) and I love it. I grabbed the crossbow because I'm 6'6" so an average crossbow is out of my draw length without spending more than it's worth unless I was doing competition instead of pleasure/hunting. I love it. And looking to buy 2 more for my brothers due to ease all around and powered delivered. If they say yea. Thanks for the videos. Appreciate you.

I have a CP sniper 370 and then bought a BearX Vanish as a second bow. In many respects they are very similar. I have often shot the one and then the other and both are impressive with consistency and accuracy. As the bear doesn't come with the extras such as limb and string dampners, I added those. For me there needs to be a relationship between price and getting the job done. Don't get me wrong these expensive xbows are awesome but I just can't bring myself to spend that type of money.

Hey Rich Topic on the quiver mounting. Most of the crossbows I looked at had three different mounting locations. Across the front, one for left handed, and one for right handed shooters. Most crossbows made are ambidextrous. This was something i noticed when I was looking to buy my first crossbow. I bought the Carbon Express Piledriver 390 for my first crossbow last year. I ended up taking my quiver off and started carrying it in my pack. I personally didn't like any of the mounting locations. I hope this was helpful. Have a great day. Thanks Tony Kitchen

I've been watching your crossbow videos for some time now. You've imparted a lot of good knowledge to your fellow hunters. I'm also in the market for a new crossbow. I have two already but just enjoy hunting with them. I also have my eye on the Barnett Hypertac 420. To me that bow perfectly fits a reasonable price with great performance. In a world where a lot of manufacturers are trying to outdo themselves with making the bows smaller and smaller I feel that Barnett offers a lot of customization so you can have a bow that fits you well. You've touched a bit on "trigger". I think having a trigger that breaks crisp and cleanly can't be overstated. This is where Barnett shines. Their Triggertech triggers are superb---better than anything I've seen on the most expensive crossbows out there. I haven't seen the Hypertac 420 yet but am looking forward to shooting one. I also get the impression that you can also use standard size arrows along with the Hyper bolts.

Fred Bear was a traditional archer but was not a traditional snob. Today there are many(N.Y.B.). He supported all hunting sports and said that we must all stick together to insure the future of our sport. He had no problem with compounds (though he never switched to one) and I don't think he would have a problem with a cross bow. I think the bow with the quiver on the left side may have been set up for a left handed shooter.

The quiver can go on eather side and can adjust different angles as well on my constrictor I have it set up perfect and I actually now prefer it on top. The main reason is when I sling my crossbow across my back I don’t have a quiver poking in my back. And with it faced alone the corssbow you now don’t catch as many limbs or sticks while walking walking or hiking thru the woods

There is a story of Fred Bear that he was convinced by his sales team to do a shoot/hunt with one of their new compound bows with industry representatives. Fred hunted with either a recurve or one of their take down recurve bows. Someone told him the compound was the same as a take down bow. Needless to say when he tried to put the compound together in-front of the reprs it failed miserably. He told his staff if they ever embarrassed him again like that he'd fire them. I don't think he ever tried using a compound bow again.

The first year bear x made crossbows, I bought their entry level model, a bear fortus, that year all their crossbows came with a trigger that you could easily adjust the triger weight with just a thumbscrew. Absolutely love that feature, , very smooth and responsive trigger, I do not understand why they got rid of that on their future models. Now the bow was cheap enough, I think I gave $250 for the package, however the arrows were junk, and the scope was garbage, I bought good arrows, broadhead, and replaced the scope, after all of that done I have around 400 in it, and it is the most consistenltly accurate weapon I have ever shot, can easily Hit a quarter every shot at 50 yards

Lol moose is just a fun term my daughter and I came up with... if your crossbow produces enough energy on that website you get a moose icon. It just means suitable for moose, which in turn means suitable for all else. Most modern crossbows "moose" out of the box but it's fun just the same. As for the cranks, you're right for sure, but it's an extra step I'd like to avoid if possible. Not mandatory, but I'd like to avoid it. I'd kinda like to stay as close to what I've been doing for 11 years as possible but just do it a bit faster and with a smaller crossbow. Good luck!!!

I have the Bear X Saga 405 and it is more cool than lame. The trigger was loooonng and smooth. After a little work it is quite nice now. I also bedded the scope rail with a blend of JB Weld and kevlar fibers. The accuracy is good enough that when shooting in the backyard, I use a 5 bullseye 🎯 target. By shooting the different bulls I don't split the bolts. I will be trying your heavy arrow theory to see if I can keep the mechanicals from opening in flight. Whatever you go with, remember that OEM is Original Equipment Mediocre. There will be changes made to make it yours.

@@Deathbybunjie I'm referring to your 5 Reasons to use Heavy Arrows. Yes, I watched the other side of the debate as well and agree with you in both cases. The point here is that the heavy arrow reasons apply to my setup. Those reasons align with my goals. The move to a heavier arrow could quiet things a bit. The slowing of acceleration to keep the mechanicals from opening at the launch. The less wear & tear is a nice bonus. As it is, my Bear X tack drives field points and is Russian Roulette with mechanicals. It doesn't go into the woods till has reliable accuracy. Keep up the good work and I hope you find that right fit.

It’s too risky at that critical moment to keep reaching for your rangefinder. I’m buying one for my ten point this spring.. Check the game laws in your state before you commit to buy ..

I never hunt with my quiver on my Xbow or my compound. Adds to much weight and distracts me. As for the decocking...i just buy the disposable bolts....carry it in my pocket or backpack. Barnett sells packs of 6-12.

@@shawnhemminger4179 If you are using a rope cocker, lightly lube the rollers contained in the hooks. Lightly wipe your side rail clean also. More than likely the squeal sound is dirt or grit within the rollers. This is a common problem if you don't keep them clean. Good luck.

Can’t say I’m surprised here.....from real life and online, everyone I know who shoots a bear (mostly compound people, but a few crossbow people too), are always mad when Bear isn’t mentioned with the top brands (Hoyt, Mathews, bowtech, prime, for compounds), (Ravin, ten point, Excalibur, mission for crossbows)....”Bear gets no respect!!!” “People don’t realize how good bear bows are”....THIS is why.....one crossbow that turkeys and one that has a quiver at a ridiculous location...

I just purchased a bear x intense crossbow but I'm having problems with the scope that came with it... It refuses to stay dialed in. For example, Ill make the adjustments and hit the bullseye but two shots after that it shoots way off, completely missing the bullseye. I just sent it back to where I purchased it from to get a new, hopefully functional scope. I am still waiting for the new scope to arrive to the dealer. Definitely not a good experience with bear x crossbows so far.

Rich..Your in the realm of technical archery now , welcome.. As a starting point the minimum KE for dispatching a whitetail 🦌 deer is 25 ft lbs .. Whoa !! This doesn’t seem correct but a well placed ethical shot will complete the task at hand . I’ll bet the average archer doesn’t even think about this ..Their just out in the field enjoying their sport . And then there are people like you and I . I’m all for FOC at 30 yds and closer . You want to kill that animal now , where 30/70 yds are for those still hunters who require a faster arrow with less FOC which would dramatically slow the arrow down. Something for you to contemplate Rich ..You mentioned no two arrows fly exactly the same..Let me add some credence to your comments.. Notice when an arrow is lying in the jig and you are about to glue your first vane/feather .. Look /align with your eye the position in place broadhead. Considering windplaning and the fact that you want your arrow just to fly straight (I’m using 4 blades ),, the relationship of the two blades should coincide exactly with the first vane/ feather . And so it should be with arrow #1,#4,#7 and #9 where you have only 3 broadheads. Now . You just might have a few arrows who want to show their stuff .. 😝 LOL
