What a great idea. I love the way these strips were sewn on a foundation square. I am gathering a few random pieces of fabric now that don't necessarily look good together but now I am thinking that if I group them into light and dark pieces they would look better in itty bitty log cabin blocks. This scrap buster idea really appeals to me as I can start using up my scraps now and it can be a work in progress until I have enough blocks to make a table runner or something. Humm, you have me thinking. Thanks for this one Kris. I really enjoyed it.

Log cabin was the first quilt I ever made and it wasn't at all like this.. I have never used a grid and I have made every size you can make and with every kind of fabric. I followed the book Quilt in a Day by Eleanor Burns. She is the best teacher at quilting and has many short cuts that help you make a quilt easy. The traditional red center is referenced the door to the Log Cabin. I just finished a small wacky scrappy string log cabin.

Thanks for the video. Why do you need a foundation piece? Is it because the pieces are small? Could you QAYG instead? I have lots of scraps already cut, so this would be the perfect pattern and size to use up my scraps!! Can’t wait to try it!
@SewtheDistance
@SewtheDistance Жыл бұрын
Great questions! For me (and this is just my opinion), I find it easier to get the tiny pieces straight when they are on a foundation, especially when they are scraps because the fabric grain can get off, causing curves, etc. QAYG could work well with this, too! Because of the added thickness, however, I may cut my pieces a tag bigger to accommodate the batting. I hope this helps! I am so happy this video inspired you to work on a scrap quilt!

I love these! I’m not accurate enough to do anything that tiny though! My colors to make a log cabin would just be random scraps with no particular colors.

I struggle with this, too. The foundation is a must for me. It makes it so you can't not be accurate! Win, win! LOL! Love scraps, too! Thank you for watching.

If I made this pattern I would use 20's 30's scrappy! I love all those materials. I have been watching your channel for a while. I really enjoy the lessons from an old quilt. I guess I never thought of learning lessons from them. I now look at old quilts differently! thanks for that! I think the small blocks would make cute coasters, gifts for christmas or birthdays. I am interested in learning how to do a swallows quilt pattern. Is that something you might consider doing on the channel?

Ohhhh! I would love to see this in the 20s/30s scraps! That would be amazing! Thank you so much! I am thrilled that these old quilt videos have helped you look at old quilts differently! That makes me so happy! I hadn't heard of swallow quilt patterns until recently. I have a lot of my content planned for the next few months, but I can see what I can do. Thanks for the idea and for your sweet comments. ❤️❤️❤️

...those would be great to use as MugRugs... just bind them, and you are done! They wouldn't have batting in them though...but for a MugRug, it may be okay!

Great idea! If you made the last four "logs" a bit wider, you could use batting, I would think. Love it! Mugs rugs or even coaster would be adorable! Thanks for sharing this idea!

I just bought an old log cabin quilt that looks similar to the one you show washing. I’d love to know how you determine the age of these old quilts. I was told it’s all feed sacks and around 1910 or so. It’s hand quilted and very cool. I too need to give it a good washing. Love to know what you think. I could send pictures.

Sure! I can look at pictures! My email address is sewthedistance@gmail.com. As for figuring out the dates, it can be tricky, especially with all of the reproduction fabrics out there. I use so many resources--books, websites, past lectures I have attended, reverse look-up (google lens) on my phone, and so much more! I have been collecting old quilts for 25+ years, so I have learned so much over that time. Some stuff I just know and other stuff I have research. Always learning! My favorite books are anything by Barbara Brackmann and the books "Dating Fabrics" by Eileen Trestain. Unfortunately, Trestain's books are currently out of print, so they are pricey on the used market, but I feel they are worth every penny! Hope this helps!

So why'd you start your foundation so big? Was expecting you to add on another set of strips to get to that final ~6.25" size
@SewtheDistance
@SewtheDistance Жыл бұрын
Great question! I kept it big so I could see the lines on the edges when I was sewing. If I sewed over all the lines, I wouldn't have a reference as I was adding the additional pieces. I hope this makes sense. Thanks for watching! ❤️

Someone said clockwise is wrong. I don't care, as long as its completed and looks right 😂🎉. Seriously counter-clockwise is how you're supposedly to work it around
@SewtheDistance
@SewtheDistance Жыл бұрын
I think you could do either, but I guess I do it counter-clockwise. I had to think about it, though. LOL! You could do either, right? I think so, as long as you keep going in the same direction. Unless, of course, you are making a courthouse step or another variation. Hmmm. Something to think about!
