Hey fellow creatives! Follow along as we take on a brand new art director challenge-one that dissects the graphic styles of decades past to influence our project for today. But we won't just be exploring retro design. We'll also be diving head first into one of the most successful brand-recognition advertising tactics of the1900s-creating a brand mascot. Who will we design? Watch to find out!

Hey man, really appreciating these videos - they're extremely helpful. Quick question - I know you mentioned in a previous video to avoid putting commercial scripts in a book. What if instead of a script it's just a story board? One that looks well done, made by an art director, with action lines and dialogue labeled below or inside text bubbles (maybe even comic book style) - is that still too "studenty"?

@OpenDoorCreative Жыл бұрын
Hey Jeremy! Yes, unfortunately storyboards or scripts both a) show the idea was not made and b) most creative directors won’t have time to read through the script/storyboard. Even if it’s relatively novice-looking, I suggest trying to make it real to the best of your ability. If that’s not possible, just make sure the storyboard is groundbreaking/innovative or give it the boot. Being resourceful can definitely work in your favor (you could even play into that style). Having work that one probably won’t spend the time to look at does not. Hope that makes sense.

How do you outline the sketches in illustrator? By mouse or were you doing it by hand somehow?
@OpenDoorCreative

I outline with the pen tool. Getting used to the pen tool is crucial but you can also outline your sketch with a Wacom tablet.

Hey Kev, I am a Motion Designer looking into becoming an Art director one day For so long I have been intimidated with job postings of Art Directors feeling unqualified but this year I am determined to change that. I do not have much background in doing graphic design tasks, like creating print collateral, newsletters, landing pages, etc. (I know how to make them but never contacted a printer company to make the assets) but I was wondering on a approach to learn the best way I can on the road to become an art director Im thinking, Learn the complete roles/tasks of a Graphic Designer, create case studies that have flyers, banners, brochures, newsletters, etc. of a business, (basically all the duties a graphic designer may do for a job) and also I just bought your book lol any other tips, and real world advice from your background/experience to become a Art Director one day coming from Motion Design?

Think you’re well primed with the motion skill set. Now it’s all about ideation and figuring out the best method to bring that idea to life. I think/Hope my book really explains everything and sets the groundwork for your transition. The assignment library is a great place to redirect your current skills towards the AD position. Best of luck.

No worries. It’s a fantastic career but it’s not right for everyone. My book Breaking into Art Direction dives deeper into every aspect of it and if it’s right for you. I also have more KZbin videos about the subject on my channel from how much money does an art director make (though these have been slightly updated in book since then) and do you have what it takes to be an AD. Browse around and let me know if you have any questions.

Haha great question. Used After Effects and looked up walk cycle tutorials and used an amazing tool I’ll be using a bunch in the future called Rubberhose 2 which is super helpful.
