God I'm so excited for this. I never had much a chance to run SF first edition and always regretted not getting to try it more, and adapting SF to 2e's ruleset is something a lot of people (myself included) have been wanting to see.

Honestly, the backward compatibility option was probably one of the smartest decisions made for SF2. The amount of stories that could be told in either didn't just double, it became a sliding scale of near-infinite possibility.

over the winter, a friend of mine hosted a “starfinder 2e” game, where we were playing pathfinder but stealing random stuff from starfinder, like ship combat and certain skills. it was jank but fun. i can’t wait to have REAL starfinder 2e to get into

Suppressed is basically "Prone Light". Similarly Get Em is "Flanking Light". There have been two play streams by now. They showed upgrades. Like Automatic is no longer half magazine. Reusable Grenade Shell. Everyone gets to exclude allies, applies suppressed on dave success and it works properly for melee now.

Yup, I did a recap of one of those live streams already! Go check it out. I didn't want to confuse people with this video, so I just went with what was written down in the field test. Like I said, should give us an rough estimate as to what things should roughly look like.

Starfinder 2e is going to open up so many genres of games. Sure you'll still have the ye olde fantasy of Pathfinder and the future space tech of Starfinder, but with both systems and a little bit of modifications you could play almost anything. Post apocalypse wasteland, steampunk New York noir, 80s supernatural, high fantasy with crystal powered magic mechs, you name it!

6:08 Primary Target seems useful for enemies that have a much higher Reflex save (I'm assuming that's the save suppressive weapons usually use) than their AC. This would allow you to target one particular enemy for more accurate fire while still making the others in the AoE make their regular saves.

that being said, the Bombard fighting style seems to make Primary Target irrelevant with the current rules. I hope they add something to Bombard to make it more friendly to Primary Target.

I suppose, especially if the enemy has something like evasion (which they thankfully don't give to enemies too often.) But still, I'd rather have a 75% chance to do half damage, than like, a 50% chance to do full damage. Because an attack vs. AC is all or nothing, whereas the cone is a basic reflex save.

@@PsiPrimeProductions1 true, I didn't think about the save vs half feature of the save. But I think the percentages would be skewed more with creatures that have abnormally high Reflex saves (and are therefore also more likely to have evasion). as an admittedly extreme example, the Water Scamp is a level 1 monster with AC 16 and Reflex +11. That's such a drastic difference in relative defense strength that if you were facing that creature, Primary Target would be a no brainer. So you're right that the nature of basic saves makes Primary Target more niche, but it still has a place in certain circumstances. Of course, this also requires the party to both decide to make a Recall Knowledge check AND roll high enough to get the relevant information, so I might be overestimating how practically useful it'd be. But I also house rule that any PC who has training (or expert/master/legendary, depending on the level of the monster they're fighting) in the relevant knowledge gets a free Recall Knowledge check - if they remember to ask for it.

hmmm but I just checked the Soldier playtest, and I realized two things. 1) the fact that Con is their key attribute means that they're significantly less accurate with attack rolls than I was thinking, especially since 2) I was incorrectly assuming they got the same Expert proficiency at first level that Fighters get. So maybe Primary Targeting isn't so great, after all.

Nice video! It's so nice to see the character building familiarity, and yet see how different a soldier is from a fighter for example... I'm spoiled with having pathbuilder on my phone... What do you think, will there be a Starbuilder 2e too? :) Also, an idea for a video, for us complete star finder noobs: could you make a core-classes vibe video? Where you talk about the class a little, and about what made it unique in sf1. Maybe there won't be too much vibe change :)

Ah Pathfallout, love to see it. Now i want to make a Minotaur/Versatile heritage Dragonkin and call it a Deathclaw. Once we get the Starfinder playtest and Core 2, I'm definitely gonna try that out myself.

Actually, my favorite class in the mass effect series was the commando (infiltrator/soldier). Using a sniper rifle but still had all the skills I needed to get the job done.

@@PsiPrimeProductions1 same here. I hope Starfinder 2e really grows in popularity. Science fantasy is so fun, and just such a cool setting. It includes my favorite books and movies. It needs more representation in the TTRPG space. SF2 might just be that. I'm certainly all in. Currently running a PF2 game and playing in an SF1 game.

Goddamn I feel so excited for the Starfinder. Can not wait to theorycraft my characters into 2nd ed. Although it might take a momen since I'm a weirdo and went for classes which have not been covered and some might not be in the 2e. Mechanic, Mystic and Solarian defenetly will be there. Though Precog, Nanocyte and Biohacker are questionable. (Although if I recall Precog will be Witchwarper subclass, and Nanocyte was being considered for an archetype)

So, bad news, Mechanic and technomancer won't be in the core book (Paizo has said that the core book won't have enough technological items to make those classes work, kinda like how the original pathfinder 2 core book didn't have enough alchemy items for the alchemist.) Paizo does plan to have release them in a Starfinder Tech supplement though. Witchwarper will be in the core book instead, and witchwarper and precog were rolled into the same class. GOOD NEWS: since PF2 and SF2 are cross compatible, you can make a Pathfinder Inventor in SF2, which can cover a lot of the same area. And a Churgeon alchemist can probably cover a lot of similar material as a biohacker.

I played the soldier class yesterday with my friends as we tested out Starfinder 2e, and I was thoroughly disappointed. Area and auto fire weapons hit your allies as well as enemies, so Bombard is the *only* viable soldier subclass. And even then if you’re playing with a big party (which I was) its usefulness is drastically reduced.

Not true? Close combat also works. And there are new fighting styles in the full playstest (out now) like armor storm, which lets you run in, point an explosion weapon at yourself, explode, and not take any damage. Also Ereudite warrior doesn't need to even attack anyone to suppress them. Also, if your party is willing to work with you, you can probably figure out a way for the others to work. I HAVE heard that the damage is underwhelming though.

@@PsiPrimeProductions1 sure, if you want to play a melee focused soldier who forgoes ranged firepower you could do alright. But at that point just play a fighter. As for armor storm and erudite warrior, neither addresses the problem of either your allies getting in melee with the enemy, or your enemy getting into melee with your allies. Second that happens you either don’t use auto/area fire, or you get comfortable with the fact that you’re about to do more harm to your own team than the enemy.

@@nerdlydelicious1876 I mean, you can also move around to position your cone so that you are hitting enemies and not allies. Also, if you have a melee focused party, consider picking up a Zero canon, which does line area attacks (less chance of hitting your allies.) Also the Whirling swipe feat lets anyone AoE attack with melee weapons, so position yourself so you are out of range of your allies and go to town. You don't even need great strength because it keys off of your Constitution for DC. I'm not saying your critisisms are invalid, just that there are ways to mitigate the downsides you are mentioning.

@@PsiPrimeProductions1 you shouldn’t have to mitigate downsides just to do what the class is supposed to do. This is a glaring issue with the soldier, and frankly it shouldn’t have even made it to playtest like this.

@@nerdlydelicious1876 You . . . you ALWAYS have to mitigate for a party? It's like arguing 'I can't use my fireball-based sorcerer because my party keeps getting in the way.' See if your party is willing to work with you. If they aren't, you are going to have to figure something out. Maybe your fireball-based sorcerer takes lightning bolt instead. Adjust your tactics. Same here, if your party is going to run into the area of effect attack range, let them know not to, or get a different area weapon. Besides, if the damage is as weak as you claim, hitting a party member for 1d8 damage to get 5 enemies with 1d8 damage seems like a good trade to me. As long as that player is fine with it.

I know that they now have a stabby and shooty option at level one, so that's nice. I dunno, I'll have to see how it shakes out.

@@PsiPrimeProductions1 they're less options, and more, "remember how Solarians had to pick whether they got a melee weapon, ranged weapon, armor, or a shield at lvl 1? Now, you can use melee, ranged, or defense; you just have to use an action to switch between." Which is honestly a HUGE step in the right direction as far as I'm concerned.
