As someone in the entertainment industry, I'm ashamed, I actively go out of my way in lighting design for stage productions to accommodate D/HH by putting interpreters in soft light near the area of the stage with the most blocking so as to reduce the amount of neck strain for D/HH, and I am even developing a setup to run live captions for scripted content. I will fight anyone in the industry over this. Who cares if it is distracting to the hearing community? Make it accessible or don't do it at all.

As a Deaf individual in entertainment, I am impressed with the support that Amber Galloway and her team has made music more accessible. I urge folks to support accessibility for all needs especially in the Arts.

I am a hearing person, HOWEVER.....I too noticed that access is very limited, if ANY at all. I have been watching updates where I live in upstate N.Y. and I also pay attention to the interpreters (former ASL and Deaf studies student)....during the briefings the camera was focused on the speaker ONLY, EVEN THOUGH the interpreters were on the platform as well. The only reason I knew that they were even there was when the camera panned out and then they were able to be seen, at nearly the END! This is UNACCEPTABLE and whatever I can do to do my part, I will! Sharing your post and following.

Don't they have the tech that they can split the screen so the interpreters can be seen the whole time? I remember seeing it a long time ago but I haven't seen it recently

Hi, I'm a lighting designer. please tell me about your experiences and things you would rather change, I know often times that the Deaf/HH are segregated into their own section at theatrical productions and concerts and I am aiming to fix that either with live captions or by using soft light towards the areas with the most blocking so that you don't have to crank your neck left and right and up and down to lip read and follow the action while getting the context and content. I am passionately trying to make the world of live theatre more accessible to the Deaf community.

@dcoston1991 putting the interpreter on a screen that's a bit higher than them, and angled towards the crowd. Captions on it would help the deaf/HH who haven't been able to learn ASL would be great as well.

I agree 100%!! I am a hearing person and I absolutely love ASL! I do not have many deaf people in my community because it is small but I do know someone who has cochlea implants. When I get older I want to possibly be an ASL interpreter or an audiologist to help the deaf community. If there’s anyway for me to help, please let me know, but I say there’s not much for me to be able to help with because I’m only 13 years old sadly. I do interpret at church when I asked, even though there is no body there deaf.

Contact Garth & Trisha’s people and tell them what happened. Insist that the two of them are specifically informed. I would be surprised if they won’t try to make things right. Unless they’re not the problem themselves... then their staff will be more savvy to deal with FB. None of that addresses the issues at the White House, of course, but given the misinformation and garbage coming from there, you might be safer missing out...

I would hurt to know he cannot participate in an activity if he did not have his cochlear implants. He is in the process of learning sign language. The k you amber for speaking up! We do need access!! I may not be deaf but I am hard of hearing and I don’t understand why we can’t get proper communication and access on important information as you said the Coronavirus!! And I watched recently about the fake interpreters because they aren’t being screened closely to make sure they are actual interpreters like yourself! We need better access to the hearing world! We need better access to news outlets and stations! We need better access to be able to understand national emergencies and such! We need better access period!!

As a profoundly Deaf teenager with two Cochlear Implants who use ASL in order to communicate. I completely agree with this, especially when we, Deaf or HoH (Hard-of-Hearing), we deserve to have access just like other Hearing people do. And we also deserve to have a equal access to music, entrainment, movies, tv shows, and many more, and if there is no captions or access, then how do we know what really going on even in the news? So I completely agree to make even more access to happen present and future!

Unfortunately I’m seeing the same thing happening here in Brazil! A lot of music streaming’s and until now just one of them had interpretation to Brazilian sign language, and a lot of people made memes about that, they made funny of the interpreters. We have a lot of information about the coronavirus and just a few of them has subtitles or an interpreter. I think you’re right trying to make people see how unfair all of theses are. I would like to ask you for permission to make an interpretation of your video to Brazilian sign language and share here in our deaf community!

I am Deaf (Born Deaf). It has become a Norm, to b set aside. Although not accepting it. Everyone in their own way has been a Victim somehow, but we come together n Equal it out. Interpreters help. It is not until it happens to them that it will affect them then they will understand. Pathetic we have to go so far. I truly enjoy throughout time your videos n your appearances in TV. Hope to continue seeing new material of yours.

I took American Sign Language in 10 grade I took it again in 12th I couldn’t take it in 11th because my classes were full. I was in special ed my entire life and I have a learning disability and I did awesome in the class and I wanted to become a asl interpreter so bad my teacher saw me how good I was at it and I made some friends who were deaf and one of them is my boyfriend and he makes me smile and I’m still taking sign language classes for him but I couldn’t become a asl interpreter because no college on Long Island ny has the problem no more but one college did but I didn’t wanna go all ways to queen’s so I leant by self and I remeber when we had are asl day on are school. I went to it and my boyfriend came too and I had to preform a song I was so nervous but I did and my teacher was proud of me I never gave up on asl no matter what even if I have learning disability. I can’t BELIVE they aren’t providing access. I also knew sign language because I didn’t talk until I was about 12 so I leant sign language but I’m shocked they aren’t providing access. I’m also hard of hearing but it’s at the point where I can basically hear in the right ear 10% but I did get a cochlear implant. they should provide access

I have been a cashier at a chain of sporting goods stores for a little over a year and have also been an asl student for almost a year. I actually got in trouble for practicing the things I would need to communicate with a deaf customer and was told I would be fired if I continued. It amazes me that people are not only just...not providing access but actively going out of their way to shut it down...

Absolutely! As a hearing person who wants to make a bigger effort for my deaf family and friends, are their legal limits on who can interpret church services that are streamed online? I am not a licensed interpreter, but I am pretty fluent in ASL. Would I be able to interpret an online church service, or does the church need to hire a certified licensed interpreter? I have heard stories of people being sued, because they tried to interpret when they weren't licensed.
@saharafortner4177
@saharafortner4177 4 жыл бұрын
That usually happens when someone who doesn’t know sign language, ends up pretending that they do and just making random hand movements. I’m not sure on your problem, but I do know that that is the reason for suing. Also, if this is a church where everyone knows everyone, chances are that they will not sue you and will stand up for you, if someone does. Again, not sure on the actual legalness, but I’m not sure where a problem would be created. Unless there is a Karen there, then I’m so sorry for your state lol.

Amber, me as a Hard of hearing person I have to fully agree with you I wished that many people did allow access for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing I am identified as being Deaf even though I can hear somewhat being born that way. To hear this from Facebook it is absolutely a huge huge disappointment. Cause I agree we all can do better. We all can be better. I have a lot of friends who are in college in ASL, Deaf, Blind, Hard of hearing you name it. I have seen it, heard about it, learned about it. I really do not like how many are abusing their "Right" to hear. I have to use CC all the time cause I cant understand what is being said half the time and when I get rejected I feel very offended. I take being a disabled person very very very very very seriously and I support anyone who is like myself. If I see any one using ASL I will automatically use ASL. if someone is talking to me I will automatically talk to them. BUT I prefer to use sign period because I grew up with it from when I was 2 years old. Amber you have my support 100%.

I know this is year late, but the statute of limitations has not expired on filing an ADA claim with the Department of Justice for the Garth and Trisha thing. And if the company who put on the Garth concert is still denying access with other venues, then the statute resets with each violation. Every single time this happens...the best thing you can do for the deaf community is to get the ADA violation filed immediately. The place you file online is with the Federal Department of Justice. They WILL investigate it. And if they find an ADA violation they will mandate correction usually through mandatory ADA training for the entire business and a fine. File against Facebook too. One of the Ivy league law schools studied disability discrimination and said that the disabled are discriminated against more than African Americans and Latinos COMBINED, so we must fight the good fight and stand up for those who don't fight for themselves. And one of the best tools we have to help the disabled and get companies to get compliant is the ADA via the Department of Justice.

Then I KZbind + saw you + this way of interpreting music which I think I could possibly have been born to do. I know no one who is deaf tho.
