One of the biggest problems with me about these two subspecies is it is harder to tell where the line is drawn between "This monster has unique moves because of its species" and "this monster has unique moves because of its quest rank" as often Azure and Pink appear after the hunter has transitioned between hunter ranks such as from LR to HR in world.

Another cool thing they could do to flesh out these monsters' above average bodyweight is to make their landings/takeoffs look and sound more impactful than those of their regular counterparts, with extra visual effects and camera shakes, specially since modern Rathalos alternates between modes so often. I think this change could really benefit your hypothetical Raths, specially the Azure one, which i really liked They could also use some of their land moves in the air and vice versa, since they're so agile. For example, Rathalos/Espinas' body slam jump/landing attack. Azure could use it, but not for landing. Instead, as a single attack, a chained sequence, or a combo opener for other aerial moves. Alatreon and Disufiroa have that triple airborne paw slam move that functions similarly to this

Big fan of the whole "make them greedier and more prone to over extend" concepts. After fighting Azure and pink way more recently I can 100% see them doing that. I've yet to break back into master rank as i'm taking my time enjoying a world without flagships (so that I can fall in love with them all over again) and MAN those two are aggro
@robertmacfergus9288
@robertmacfergus9288 8 ай бұрын
In addition to the improved aggression one could capitalise on the weight increase by making them predominantly piscivorous, kind of like the Sea Wolves of BC Canada. As such they would hang out in areas with shallow water, have fire that is *not* negated by water and have ground bursts. Since they fight on shallow water the ground bursts could pick up the water element when used on that ground type. With rathalos using its wings to create wind projectiles or air explosions, and rathian doing tail swings and hops as methods of creating its ground attacks. It gives them a different niche, a different environment, justifies the larger size and weight with a higher nutrient diet and makes the colours work since they are camouflaged against the green foliage(blue raths green wings) and sakura blossoms above them rather then the ground bellow them. They wouldn't need to just eat fish, it could also be justified as mainly eating fish during the fishes migration kind of like with brown bears and salmon. I do think a non sexually dimorphic rath relative would be cool, such as one that has lots more protofeathers and lives in cold environments. That rather then having venom on its tail or claws has detachable quills on its tail that can be fired by tail swings. Could even in master rank do the wind burst thing to occasionally mix ice into it's moves, but rarely enough that one wouldn't want to slot in ice defence.

Ooooo those are some really cool ideas. I love taking in really nitty gritty ecology stuff like that into account. As for a non-dimorphic Rath relative, I'd be down, Just a close relation to them in general would be kinda dope to see. Frontier has two monsters that fit that bill actually.

As usual, your takes are very agreeable. I really appreciate you explaining how these Subspecies come to be from the lore. The English versions of games don't do a great job of that. World only mentioned that there was a lot that needed to be there for it to happen so it's very uncommon to see. I think your ideas are very well tuned for keeping the original intentions of the designs at heart. BUT HEAR ME OUT. I think what the Azure and Pink need is a retcon. I have an idea of a lore change that I think would be really cool. I think that they should be the opposite of what they are currently established to be. Instead of Rath+1 I think they should be Rath -1. Pink Rathian I think should be, for lack of better words, a butch Rathian. They are genetically more similar to Rathalos than other Rathians. In gameplay this seems to be the case with how much more they rely on air time to keep up the tail flips, but we could take that all the way and bring it into their ecology. Imagine if Pink Rathians are evolutionarily at a disadvantage. They are not sexually selected because their pink shells look too much like red so that Pink Rathians most often do not get chosen by Rathalos to be nest mates but they do still have very strong maternal protection instincts. Thus, Pink Rathians have been observed to often seek out lesser female Rathians and to cooperatively maintain territories with them, acting like the male that they did not have the fortune to receive. Basically, a girl boss Rathian. In Gameplay, you would often see Pink Rathian with a regular Rathian instead of with a Rathalos at all and the two could have unique AI combo patterns between one another that you wouldn't typically see. Two females supporting each other because they don't have their own male. With their cooperation as thick as it is, they don't need one. Azure Rathalos, on the other hand, would be the Scar to Dreadking's Mufasa. Their blue shells are too similar to the green of the average female for them to be attractive to the natural selection processes. To make matters worse for them, the flame sacs of Azure Rathalos have a lower constitution than that of their red counterparts. Azure Rathalos compensate for these weaknesses by being true show boats who can boast having mastery of the sky to a degree that is unparalleled. They have been observed by the Guild to seek out established nests and to challenge other males, besting them in aerial combat to steal the affections of their mate ( Rath on Rath Turf War ). Sometimes, particularly dedicated Rathians will defend their mates against Azure intruders, but there have been cases sited where the male has been betrayed. I think Azure Rathalos should rely much more on its poison talons than its fire and perhaps also actually USE the stinger on the tail. Their venom is stronger than the average male to compensate for their less reliable Flame Sac so, in gameplay, even though the Azure Rath flies more often it is always coming back to the ground to try and snatch hunters with its talons. It is not without fire, having access to very large bursts of flames instead of the focused fireballs that Rathalos typically possess. So they have to get in close to their target and use a Shotgun Style Wyvern Fire attack to hit. Point is, I think Pink and Azure would be really cool to represent an alternative to what is typical with the Rath Couple instead of being ANOTHER COUPLE. Contextualizing them to be something more like outcasts of their kind would be really interesting and open up potential for very unique encounters. With Wilds seemingly allowing for much more monsters to be in an area at one time, perhaps we can have a platform for things like this to really play out in-game.

I'd probably just look at they're weapons for inspiration. The Azure/Pink line trend to have more poisonous weapons, so I'd add poison to their fireballs and allow them to dip into each other's movesets. Azure Rathalos could do the tail spin and Pink Rathian could choose to add fireballs or flame breath in the air, things like that. The overextending behaviors you suggested would be a great cherry on top.

So for one have them brighten up the colors to were they standout in the map just from being there, that would help with the whole they have to be aggressive when hunting ecology. Along with being actively aggressive on sight have them throw themselves at the player as part of their attacks. Like Pink has a fake charge that turns into a flip and Azure actively tries to land on the player to inflict poison. Have them function as map specific invaders and just like World Bazel if they're on the map they will interrupt the fight. Also for turf wars were the base Raths would lose these one's don't or at least drawn depending on the opponent.

Idk how to explain it, but Azure is one of my favorite monsters of all time. I played 3U religiously in high school, and he was always one of my favorite monsters to fight. It was the oddest thing, because Rathalos himself ended up being one of my more dreaded fights. To this day, I have NO idea what the difference was that made me love one over the other. Here is a monster pin attack I want for Azure: He grabs you in a talon and while you are poisoned from it he just... jumps up and down. There is no fancy throw like Rathalos he is going Rajang on you as you feel his aggression in each blow. It's almost Secretary Bird-like as he attempts to stomp you to death. Afterward instead of throwing you he stops to sniff you to see if he had finished the job and this is your window to get away like with Rajang's wind-up. I know it is weird that I am comparing Azure to Rajang but you did say you wanted them to be more aggressive and what better other monster to compare aggression to?

That makes a lot of sense, Rathalos and Azure Rathalos have pretty much the same kind of Pin, making them have a different pin can have a big impact because, the pins pretty much isolate our attention and force them to be our center of attention. So giving them unique pins can help to emphasize the difference in their natures, I like the sniffing idea as well because I've always thought about what reason we the player can just lay there so making it possibly have a in game function to the combat would be great. Making either Rathalos take advantage of the pin with a build up like Rajang sounds terrifying but also really cool.

Here's a suggestion for green nargacuga, in case you ever cover it: - I would differentiate it from regular nargacuga in a rather simple, but very unique way. It would become the narga variant adapted to more wetland and aquatic enviroments, because fun fact, jaguars are actually pretty good swimmers, and I think making a subspecies fight in a different enviroment than the regular version is a quite effective way to expand its moveset. Like imagine its tail spikes being flatter and broader, to use the tail as a make-shift paddle almost, creating waves that can disorient the hunter. But yeah, this is highly dependent on how much aquatic areas are present, and to a larger extent if water combat ever comes back.

If their shells are more dense, corrections in their movement would be more difficult to perform. They'd have much more momentum to fight against, so they'd keep barrelling in whatever direction they're moving for longer than other raths would, snd not for lack of trying. This is a great argument, I love how you said they should be belligerent and the whole argument for making the Azure Rathalos and Pink Rathian more aggressive. I was going to say that they could be more likely to be meticulous with the decisions it makes, kind of like how most predators are patient and purposeful to make up for their lack of camouflage but I think making them more aggressive and making them fight for longer would definitely help them stand out the way they've always been. I especially like the idea of bringing back the "rathalos world tour" moves because most people unfamiliar with monster Hunter don't get what's so special about Rathalos in general. So one way that they could do is bring a version of the tour and some of the combos where normal and Azure Rathalos can both behave differently like if normal Rathalos shot fire at you while flying while Azure picked up something like a boulder or another animal to drop on the player. Next monster? I think a good monster you could go over next could be the different kinds of Basarios or Gravios, because they might be even more ecologically connected to the locales in Wilds. The ones that we know of so far are primarily rock and crystals but primarily in dry and volcanic regions with the fire element. But as the games grow and become more ecological with connecting locale and monster, I think Basarios should have more a burst rather than a ray because the fire sac it has doesn't need to be as fully developed like it is in Rise, but that's only what we have so far. They might even take advantage of the lightning rods or the ones on those Pangolin-like monsters to become thunder elemental themselves. This might lead to some kind of lightning version of a Gravios but that is just an idea.

Idea 4: There's Gogomazios as it's weapon Elements could be better utilized anywhere that isn't the end of the game. They can also use the Gogomazios without the tar since they have designs for that. I would also want to see how Azure Rathalos and Pink Rathian do more effective ways of combating against others monsters (for example Pink Rathian doing more stronger and aggressive attacks instead of just shooting three fireballs at Diablos because it is just boring I mean doing a same thing as a Normal Rathian just sucks plus Pink Rathian in lore literally kicked Bazelgeuse’ ass so I was wondering if she could do more lethal attacks). Maybe doing this will not only show the monsters more unique diverse abilities and combat capabilities instead of it just being the same thing as a normal version but also shows how they differ from the normal version.

Honestly, when I think of fixing Pink Rathalos, I think back to the false promise where they described it as "like a Rathian but different," to the point even it's tracks look off. So lore is a thicker, heavier shell keeping it on the ground, which further provokes it to Hippo-like aggression. Ok, fine then. As this is something repeated often enough its a subspecies, a Rathian that's started evolving more towards a Brute/Pseudo-Wyvern body type for ground combat ability, but isn't there yet. Different tougher wings it uses like stabbing weapons via the already existing abundance of "wing talons," probably modified for both more spikes & something of similarly toughened scales over the wings so it makes them better able to take blows ala Primordial Malzeno. Stabbing, slashing, sweeping & maybe even goring (runs you through, lifts up, and then throws you off HARD) attacks via wings. More of a focus on melee, maybe making use of the apparent spiked armor on her knees against people who want to slip in under her belly. Still functioning but not as capable wings launch into leaping stomps to catch you under her or Bazelgeuse-style gliding-tackles. The insane aggression is displayed in the older MH "on-sight" aggression, charging at you spitting fireballs the moment she sees you/her prey & jabbing with both limbs when in range, or even leaping down on you if she spots you from a higher ledge. You know, plus the recklessness you talk about. Certainly more interesting than a spray-painted Rathian. Edit/Afterthought: I suppose it would also work as a proto-Dual Blade monster, as I imagine the proper Dual Blade monster would be lighter & far more agile than a Rathian could be.

Azure rathalos is just more annoying rathalos. Pink rathian is just rathian with a harder shell. They just feel like an advanced version of their base. Like progression in the monsters you hunt. This is obvious when you look at their weapons. The base rath weapons upgrade into theirs, but they’re not something different. It would be cool if they were more unique and had their own gear with pros and cons to it compared to normal rath stuff

One very small thing that is different in World at least, the Azure Rathalos is weaker to Ice and more resilient to Thunder than the normal Rathalos. I'd also probably go a bit further with Silver and Gold, either add an element (thunder or dragon) to their attacks, or adding utility/potency to their poisons (paralysis or mixing it in with their fire attacks). Or maybe drop the silver and gold raths, because there's already 2 or 3 other rath-like monsters, like Bird-Rath Yian Garuga, and Monoblos-Rath Seregios. Or spikier-Rath Espinas.

I agree the Raths are way to similar, the difference that I can tell is that they hit harder and move fast for each variation, thankfully the deviants seem to be their own thing thanks to their moves. I always wanted Rathian to do a fire attack similar to Teostra's Flamethrower. In this case since we are talking about Inky and Pinky here I would like them to have the Flamethrower but with a spin. No really and actual Tail Spin Attack while Fire coming out of their mouths at the same time. Yeah sure they can just spin around normally Flamethrowing their attack without the tail damage but that wouldn't make them that dangerous or imposing as the Flame Tail Combo attack. But then again why ditch 1 move for another when they can have both moves under their belt? SO HERE ARE SOME MOVES ONLY FOR PINK RATHIAN: She does the "Teostra Style left and right Flamethrower" while slowly backing away. FOR BOTH OF THEM: ▲ The Normal Tail Spin Attack - maybe sometimes a flame bite after a turn or spin but very rarely. ▲ Flamethrower Spin (No tail damage) - The Flamethrower makes a BIG "ring of fire" on the ground leaving the hunters to be inside or outside this circle of flames for a few seconds..... well you can cross through it but you'll take fire damage and blight. ▲ Tail Spin Attack with Flamethrower Combo - No Ring of Fire though.

Honestly, I think their incarnations in 4U were already good enough. They add more difficult twists to the original Rathian/Rathalos and feel rank-appropriate. Any problems with the fight are problems intrinsic to Rathian/Rathalos in general. What World did to those two was a bizarre travesty, and the source of so many people thinking they’re a useless subspecies. But 4U Pink Rathian sticks out in my mind as a great difficulty spike that makes you relearn how to fight Rathian with more attention to the monster’s and your own positioning. And Azure Rathalos’s homing claw dive is a good test of reflexes.

I REALLY like the idea of Pink and Azure being more beligerent and aggressive. I think it would be really cool to encounter them on a separate hunt only for them to constantly chase you down, or to harass the monster your fighting. I also think turf wars between the original variations would be pretty neat since they would be probably very territorial species.

Good suggestions overall, but I think these monsters need a more obvious change that most players would be able to notice. Since the trend of most (especially recent) subspecies/variants is “like the basic monster, but more” and Metal Raths have more fire, I think Pink & Azure should have more poison. Your proposal would accomplish this with Pink Rathian doing more tail attacks, but then Azure Rathalos should do more claw attacks; maybe give him Seregios-style claw strikes from the ground, but sloppier, and have him do more claw attacks in the air than either Red or Silver does; the new claw moves are the ones that the series would gatekeep from the other Rathalos types.

I think Pink Rathian has actually done a decent job distinguishing herself from normal Rathian starting in gen 3. The big fireball nuke she has, the fire bite, and the spinning tail flips versus normal flips and stronger poison make her unique enough to stand out as a subspecies. Azure Rathalos on the other hand does basically nothing to differentiate himself from normal Rathalos. Same poison. Same moves. Just literally lands less often. He even used to have 1 unique move. A short ranged flamethrower from the sky. But it was inconsequential as it never hit, and they ended up giving it to normal Rathalos later so back to square 1. Just give him similar stuff Pink already has. Give him Rise's Rathalos moveset base line. Give him Pink's fire bites on the ground and rather than flamethrowers like normal Rise Rathalos give him massive burst fireballs from the sky. Also give him deadly poison cause why not.

Damn, this video was great! Can you do a video on why most giant monsters suck, and how we could improve their fights? Monsters like nakarkos, dalamadur and ceadeus have amazing designs, but are held back by their boring fights. Other than that, great videos man!

Another idea capcom could implement has to do with the old verdant hills theme. It's often associated with the raths since they're usually fought there. Maybe it could be an official theme for them (obviously remastered to be up to standard.) It would have sections where it sounds like the hunter and the rath are having a standoff, trying to think of what they should do next. However, for Azure and Pink, that section is replaced with a loud and relentless one to represent their higher aggression. I know im asking for a bit much, but my point still stands.

I think there is a fundamental problem with all subspecies from gen 1 in that they are just exaggerated version of their base monsters. Subspecies should be about adaptations and trade-offs. Azure and pink really are just conceptually more rath in your rathalos and they are outdone by their metal counterparts anyway. Honestly, I think these sub species should be scrapped from the series and their moves given to higher rank rathian and rathalos.

If they're appearance is the result of a thicker shell, maybe that could be incorporated into the design and behavior. They're plates and claws could stick out a little further, and they try to use the shell as a weapon. Maybe give each a special "wing punch" attack. The rathian already has the same spines on its wings and back that tip its tail, and azure rath might try to knock opponents off balance with a slap of its harder wing membranes.

Wow, I actually never considered that the 1st gen subspecies are based on rare color mutations of certain animals. I guess I can give them a pass however I still want them to feel different without it just being a color swap if ever they come back. Your idea of making them more aggressive and unpredictable because of the fact that they cant blend in to their environment when their juveniles in order to survive does make it a lot more interesting to fight them. I have been watching your vids and love the points and statements you talk about. Looking forward for more.

I’m someone that unironically kind of enjoys Azure Rathalos, mostly because I’m just so in love with his color palette, and seriously why the hell did they not give him the emerald wings in World? So while it really is never fun to face a purely airborne target, to me it made sense and felt like something I just had to learn how to mitigate to the best of my abilities. But I still think these ideas are very well in their concepts, and I feel that it won’t be too long before we see them again.

heres a solution for azure, just give him steve’s side swipe he does with his feet, boom new fun aerial attack to chain into more attacks Make him do more swooping movement to prove hes a better flier Also do not give pink toxin or deadlier poison, thats dreadqueen’s thing and nowhere in the lore does it say that thr mutation gave pink better poison, just a harder pink shell

Not sure if you’re gonna say this but if I had to give the sub raths anything, I’d give em an ultimate attack each where they both briefly enter hellfire mode during the attack. If I recall correctly, both the sub and metal raths are rare genetic mutations, it’s just that the metal raths are rarer. Therefore, it wouldn’t be too out of the ordinary for the subs to have just a little bit of that hellfire flair as well.

Excellent work, I would love more videos like this; a move I would add to the pink rathian would be a similar one to that of the malzene in which, still in mid-air smashes his tail to the ground. To be clear, just go to the trailer of sunbreak-the mystery of Malzeno at minute 0:40. For the azure rathalos I would make a variation of the Rodan move but diagonally, so that he can do it upwards and then unleash a combo, or from above towards the hunter, impacting the ground. I believe that these moves would make you feel more the 'hardness' of their armors, and their chaotic volvy of destroying you at any cost.

easiest solution, keep pink the way she is, her armor gimmick teaching positioning to hit smaller weak points is great. for azue just take away Rise rathalos' weed that he was tricked into smoking when he was doing dreadking lessons so he remembers he has feet while keeping base rathalos like World. i do like the idea for pink to miss a charge on purpose to shoot you.

Maybe black labrador's should have different frame data, at least on their jabs and lunges, the fact they only differ in health and defense makes them the most boring of labrador alternatives, at least the lebrador retriever get's a boost to their water abilities.

My idea involves going in the opposite direction, and these 2 could be the start of the rare colour morpth idea, they would act like shiny pokemon, they would be treated the same so Azure wouldn't be a separate monster he would simply be a rare spawn so like every 20 rathalos you hunt 1 has a chance of being Azure, but fight, materials, everything is the same, I think it could be a good idea to break up the monotony and simply be a novelty for the player while not using up resources that could otherwise be use on other acutaly different subspecies or even other monsters that need attention

Please make sure to make it clear that these kinds of design suggestion videos are based on opinion, so that people don't look at you funny. You can discuss design and make suggestions, but don't ever think Capcom doesn't have reasons for their choices that completely go over a players head.
