Thanks for clearing up the date thing. I get so many calendars in the mail that I dedicate one just to start dates but I count my weeks (and days) opposite of yours LOL. FreshCutKY did a vid about her favorite seed companies also. Botanical Interest is one that I like. LMZ rocks. I keep reading /rereading her books and learn something new each time. Thank you for your sharing all your knowledge. There is always something to learn from an experienced gardener/farmer. Here's to a successful 2021 (on so many levels)!!

I'm so sad missed your live. Thank you for all of your information. I'm a stay at home mom now, with a special needs child. I'm already planning on a full garden of greens for green clean food and I've always sold the odd handful of flowers at the Farmers Market and it occurred to me I need to plant some cut flowers intentionally. You have inspired me. I'm going to stick to about 6-8 flowers with a plan for some perennials. I started with the top 10 video from "You can't eat the grass", that's how I found you. I have been a Johnny's Seed customer for 25 years so I feel ahead of the game a bit. I am a big Bluestone Perennial girl too. I have a feeling you are going to see me a bit. I live in the UP of Michigan and "they" say I am zone 5 but I used to live 550 miles south and that IS zone 5 so I do everything as a zone 4b. (we got 3 feet of snow in April last year). I just ordered Lisa's Cool Flowers while I was sitting here! Thank you again! -Kirsten Edited to say: I always plant baptesia outside in the fall.

Raven's Edge Thanks for these sheets. I was just thinking I needed to get organized, even though we have just been covered in snow on central Vancouver Island, BC! Your advice about the calendar weeks is great. I am a wannbe zone 8 as all the charts say I should be, but micro climates make me more a zone 7. Way more seeds to start this year. I just can't seem to resist the seed racks and catalogues. Now to get everything entered and then....

Thank you for the Live!! You are the best! Another great podcast is Porch and Prairie, you can find it under the blog tab on their website. They are a husband and wife flower farmer/florist business. The podcast is focused on the business, gross margin, and profitability aspect of it. Start with # 1, soooo good. I completely have a different mindset when it comes to pricing stems after adding in the "labor". These flowers don't grow on their own!

Hi Nicole! I know this video is a year or more old, but I'm just watching it. I've watched it a couple times! I am the same zone as you. I'm trying to wrap my head around this cool flowers thing. (I am on a wait list for Lisa's Cool Flowers book as it is out of stock). When I look at Johnny's website, I was following along with your example of snapdragons. You said start seeds 4-6 weeks before week 12 because you can start planting outside 4 weeks before the last frost date (week 16). When I look at the cool flowers chart on Johnny's website, it says snapdragons are winter hardy zone 5, so that diagram shows you can start 6-8 weeks before last frost date. I'm confused. Does the book go into more detail? I'm thinking of getting it on kindle until I can get the hard copy.

Hi again! :) So... I was on the live chat and I thought this was straight in my mind but it's not. lol! So... if I want to start sweet peas, for example, and they take about 75-85 days, and can be planted out as seeds 5 or 6 weeks before last frost, and take "12-28 days" to germinate (!!), do I add on the germination time to the 75-85 days? Or is that 75-85 days including the germination? I'm in zone 6b and wondering if I should start them now or wait. Once I'm clear on this, I think I'll be good to go on the whole when to start seeds thing. Thank you so much!
@FlowerHillFarm
@FlowerHillFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Nope. 75-85 or whatever days to bloom includes germination

if you put the whole seed packet into the fridge what happens to the seeds you‘re not sowing? can i do the stratification process over and over again without hurting the seeds? or is it just a „once and done-project“?

Hi Nicole, I have a question about Bells of Ireland. I bought seeds from Johnny's and Floret and they both list to plant 10-12" apart or 12" apart and I see on your chart that you grow them 6". I would love to be able to sow them that close. Have you grown them this close successfully? Thank you for all the information you are so willing to share. I binge watched all your videos when I found you. Can't wait for all the beautiful blooms! #Moonshadowflowerfarm
@FlowerHillFarm

I don’t plant anything that far apart. Johnny’s spacing isn’t typically for farming. I know one farmer who spaces everything 4 inches and does great!

Oh! That is so great!!! That means I can grow more!!! Same for Amaranth?
@FlowerHillFarm
@FlowerHillFarm 3 жыл бұрын
The amaranth is probably the farthest spacing - mine got huge this past year with extra room (some seedlings died) so I’m probably going to try a 9 inch spacing for those this year

Then I’m going to give that a go. I have way more seeds than I have space to grow so it’s exciting to know I can grow more than I was expecting to be able to. It does get very humid here in Georgia so that is a bit of a concern but I won’t know if I don’t try. Wish me luck!!! Thanks!!! It’s so cool to be able to get one on one advice and answers from such an amazing grower. I really appreciate it.

If you're starting seeds indoors, how are they hardening off for cool flowers? I understand how this would work for fall planting but not late winter planting. Can very young plants handle the cold coming from the warm indoors? I'm just curious as to how this would work as I only do winter sowing currently (plants are never started indoors) but would do indoors if they don't need hardening off.
@FlowerHillFarm
@FlowerHillFarm 3 жыл бұрын
There is a week before I plant out that they are hardened off. I use my porch and a greenhouse

I’m on the line of 7 & 8. I’ve never grown lissies but dahlias are very rewarding! Good supports are your friends and definitely pinch them. The stems are sometimes hollow so pay extra attention to the forecast so you avoid cutting before a rain storm. They are thirsty and hungry. I did organic granular at planting and a light bi-weekly feed with an organic water soluble fertilizer. It’s humid here so I space mine out at 18 inches. I hope this helps you. Good luck!!! 🤗

I’m in zone 8b in Southern Oregon. I’m trying Lissies for the first time this year (in soil blocks). I started them last week and am keeping my fingers crossed! And Dahlias do great here! The Dahlias I started from seed last year actually did better than the tubers I planted. Depending on your variety, I’d go with 6-10” spacing & DEFINITELY pinch for more blooms. I had bigger, more vigorous plants that were in full sun compared to the ones that had part shade. Happy growing! 🌱
