amazing work! i watched your first 2 videos in your series, and this one was suggested to me by youtube. it's impressive to see how much you've improved in such little time. do you take suggestions? i personally struggle a lot with less realistic and more anime hair, especially with visible hairlines. i would love to see your take on approaching it, maybe with a character such as erik from DQ:XI for example, or a genshin impact character? thank you for your time!

Hey John, thank you so much for kind word !! I really appreciate it. And oh man, thanks for suggestion! I absolutely love Eric and I'd love to make his hair with hair cards like the one you see on cinematics. I'd probably do research and take the same approach as making Cloud's hair from F7 remake unless I do more sculpted method. I'll definitely put him in my to do list. Thanks!

@@tomcreektomoyaogawa4358 oh yeah!!! i totally forgot about cloud from the remake ngl. it would be cool to see! i love seeing how high quality and realistic they can make hair with hair cards down to even SS on the edges. it's a bit difficult trying to figure out a more stylized look, but for things like disney/overwatch/valorant it's a must with how unique the hair shapes are thank you for considering it!!! can't wait to see it

This looks awesome! Do you have any experience making shorter male hair? I've been struggling with it a bit with the particle system approach, and I'd love to see one of your videos focusing on that! I'd also love to see your eyebrow/eyelash process. Thanks for the great video as always!

Hello gilbz!! thank you so much for the kind word, that means a lot to me! : ) I haven't made that much of short hair style but the key elements to make the short hair looks good is to understand hair growth and direction flow. I personally like to use something like interactive grooming or new geo node based hair grooming tool but if you are going with particle system then I believe it is better to divide head into several hair growth zone groups (I don't mean actually splitting mesh) and use particle system to each of those hair zone. this way you will be able to comb the hair easier and get better control. And also if you are going for super sort hair, it is recommended to utilize hair cap to blend head mesh and the hair nicely. I'm going to make the video about it in the future if I find the male character I like so yeah. : )

Hi there. For the fur, I would recommend you to watch developer's video(Bartosz Styperek) titled " How to make fur for games in blender" . There are many ways of creating fur, but it teaches you simple and easy of creating fur using hair tool :)

hi tom, im having trouble setting up my cards to follow a curve like yours do, i have purchased hair tool but im having difficulty understanding it, other than the online documentation and your videos, do you reccommend any other sources to learn this addon?

Hi there! yeah, hair tool has gotten bit harder to learn and use after big hair tool update. Because of that, I have implemented new hair creation workflow myself and as a result, I don't use it as much. And unfortunately , there are not as many resources to learn from as it used to be. so if you are struggling to understand how to use this tool, I would recommend you to join hair tool discord sever. There are many talented people there so you can ask question to get help. second option is to downgrade the hair tool version (version before big update) . this is inconvenient but at least it will work and you can follow most of hair tool tutorial videos.

@@tomcreektomoyaogawa4358 Hi tom, yeah it is pretty tough to learn, i only got the tool cause of the ability to use curves to place cards, is that possible without the hair tool addon? the curves in base blender are very tricky to use

@@Vduke735 Yes, you can do that without addon but, it is so frustrating to use for sure. curves in blender tend to spin around uncontrollably and makes it harder to place hair cards precisely and besides it takes more time and effort to set things up. If you have access to Zbrush, you can use curve modifier to place cards without any problem( which I'm going to make video about soon) But otherwise yeah, your best bet is to use older version of hair tool.

How did you got that specular in the hair? You didnt explain those things, as you said, you just exported diffuse color and bump from ur software

@@gifeight yeah, in blender addon is doing all the work, in unreal engine and marmoset, custom shader is making anisotropic effect on the hair. the simplest way to do it in marmoset is to set anisotropic value to 90 and start adjusting value from there.

Hey thanks for watching Dien! and yes but, I always use albedo map with random ID map or use shader in game engine to assign colour to the hair and add variation to the colour so I honestly don't know how you would do that in blender. shader that comes with Hair tool addon only works in blender so I have never bothered to adjust material property of hair during hair creation process. sorry man....

Hello! For the fur, I used the short hair modelling tool in hair tool. select the mesh you want the fur on, press con+shift+H, setup short hair. and then you can use sculpt tool to comb the fur : )

Hello Emmanuel! Thank you so much for watching my videos and I'm happy to hear that they were helpful to you! And sure! So how you can do that is by first , open content browser, right click, import texture, navigate to where you downloaded the hair tool addon, and if you have already unzipped the addon files, you have the texture files so find it there. You have no problem using hair tool addon without unzipping the textures in blender , but you need to unzip it if you want to use same hair texture in other programs. once texture is imported, double click on any texture that doesn't contain colour information ie, opacity map, turn off SRGB to avoid causing graphical errors. If you already have hair shader then plug that texture in that, but if you don't, you can go grab shader created by epic in meta human project. hope that helps man!

Hello Mr. Ogawa. I'm Numan Gursoy. I am a 2nd year student of cartoon and animation department in Turkey. I'm making a short 3D animated movie with Blender for my school project. My project is about a boy who lost his mother as a child, trying to become a scientist and invent a parallel universe device and bring his mother back from a different universe. I just finished my storyboard and 3d animatic. I'm currently designing the characters. I want to use hair cards like you because the hair system in blender unfortunately uses too much cpu or gpu. I have never used hair cards before. Can you help me with this? Can you show me your shading nodes so I can render realistically in Blender?

Hey Numan!! That sounds absolutely amazing man! That is really cool project to work on. So assuming you are using Hair tool addon, for information about shader set up, you can go watch my "Let's make real time hair in blender + hair tool addon ep5 ( French side braid)" video. and if you want to learn how to use hair cards to create game ready hair, then you can watch episode 2-4 of my hair modelling video series. older videos include the basic and beginner stuff but I have been cutting those out of my recent videos so. For rendering part, sorry honestly I only use blender for only hair card creation in my workflow, and don't use it to render out my characters so I don't know how to adjust the rendering setting of evvee to achieve realistic render. Hope that helps.

If you are using newer version of hair tool you can't do this since everything got updated and how things work were changed as well. Only way you can use hair tool right now is by learning how to use new system or downgrade hair tool version.

Hi!, so this addon just adds a lot of handy and useful tools and features for modelling hair , and if you want to use custom hair textures, you either have to make or purchase ones.
